A tale from Echo 3

Blog by Kai Wallace-Mayer

The first thing I asked after being made comms officer and agreeing to write about the environmental project was: “do I need to start writing now?”

That is the wrong attitude for this project, and for Raleigh in general, I wager.
If you come out to Huskaradi, you had better be ready to work. I won’t lie to you, the environmental phase is a long one, but it is rewarding in its own way. The days are long, but the hours are short, and they say that the best night’s sleep is after an honest day’s work. I can neither confirm nor deny the sleeping bit, but there is most definitely enough hard, honest work to go around out here.

This brings me to the mornings and, by extension, the venue. The scenery is nothing short of amazing. From the densely forested hillocks in the distance to the orange sunrise over the reservoir, every morning will leave you breathless. Even a task as simple as fetching water becomes an adventure when the pump you’re looking for sits on the shore across from a mountain that looks straight out of a storybook.

In the evenings you’ll be doing your best to shake the dust of the trench from your clothes, before sun goes down over Huskaradi and all gives way to campfire stories and slightly wacky games, some of them perhaps involving flashlights and terror. You’ll lay down in your incredibly comfortable basher and be lulled to sleep by the lullaby that is India at night, combined with the subtle whisper of the reservoir’s flow.

There’s a reason why they call this phase ‘environmental’. You’ll be getting very intimate with dirt, soil, and mud during your time is Huskaradi. Not to mention the elephant calls and specially prepared explosives going off every other night with the hopes of warding the great grey creatures away. Working (and singing) in the rain will become common place to you, and by the end of the phase you’ll be so well acquainted with making your motions over a hole in the ground that you won’t want to go back to a normal toilet again (that is a joke).

Leaving Huskaradi, you’ll feel nothing but sorrow, though that sorrow will be diluted by the joy that camaraderie brings, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Tears may be shed, hugs and handshakes will be exchanged, and everyone will be rife with anticipation for another great phase. It only gets better, venturers, so carpe diem, good night and don’t let the elephants bite.

I am Kai Mayer, and this has been your Echo 3 comms report.

Hi Emma, so lovely to hear your voice on Thursday. The trek sounded hard going but really glad you made it and enjoyed the experience - minus the leeches!

Hope you enjoyed the shower, and a bit of pampering, Indian style of course! Bet you smell a lot sweeter now. Vicky and Jade send lots of love, hugs and kisses and can't wait to see you. I've posted some chocolate from nan and a letter from me, so enjoy! Jade's leaving assembly was lovely, hilarious and sad, all rolled into one :). Steven and Lisa are busy decorating - miracles do happen!

Enjoy the next phase of your expedition and I hope it's rewarding.

Love and miss you so much,

The West Sussex Newsletter 2nd Edition

    Hi Chaitali ,

So we got your message, and saw you’ve been on Facebook. Good to hear from you and its good that you are taking our pointers and getting some close up pics! We all enjoyed that

We miss you still Kiani wants you to come home but thats not gona happen.

So the news round up from the past two weeks. we are currently all at Clarks house enjoying her belated birthday party. Sitting around the dining table writing this newsletter with half a packet of party rings! Cos there’s no party without the rings!

We played rounders and scatter ball (Kiani will let you know the details of that game when you return) Team awesome won both games.Team lamo lost both games.Teams were: Team awesome: Vicki, Katie, Anna and Clark. Team Lamo: Kiani, Lisa, Catherine and Maria

We saw Clark’s new path.needs more work. She is not a happy bunny, She says the contractors aren’t getting paid until the works done.we’ll let you know the progress on this in the next newsletter.

Clark: went to Plymouth last weekend and went to a beer festival.drinking old man cider.oh yeah. Got drunk on her birthday, chair danced to beyonce, cos who run the world? GIRLS!

Kiani: Finished school yesterday, starting camp tomorrow.no rest for the wicked. Went out on Tuesday night for Clarks bday.got a bit drunk.got a taxi home.enjoyed the taxi driver ALOT! She borrowed Lisas camera during the week and returned it safely. She got new heels. she got a postcard from Marcella in the Algave. Also I can’t stop listening to the ‘Wavin Flag’ song from the World Cup!! Love it!!

Vicki: 3 more weeks left at work! Yay!No new profile pic on facebook (hope you took a look at it when you were on) Saw harry potter on Friday....AMAZING! we will go see it when we’re in Sydney. Got my bag off Clark all set to go.
Kiani had my coat from that night out in bar med. Two weeks later and i’ve finally got it back....she showed it a good time. Went swimming and saw Claudia there with her new man.....he has a beard....

Maria is out this weekend with this message: I’m going into year 6, and a few days ago I had an argument with a TA in the staff room and she stormed out. I’m now the office biatch. The headmaster was well proud of me for standing up for myself. I had to direct and do the sound and lighting for the year 6 leaving play. I well cried cos i will miss the year 6 girls. Jay lookalike has left as well...well upset....cringe! He got me a present and put kisses at the end of the card.... I went out Thursday night and got drunk with the staff. “I DYED MY HAIR!!!”

Charlet: Just got her haircut, very short, very nice, she says its lego hair. Flat hunting is complete and will hopefully be moving in in 6 weeks. Saw harry potter....was well good. She says helllloooooo and that both dogs shat on her bed....she is not happy!

Anna: Quit her job because they treated her like poo., but all is well as she is now working as a freelancer....posh or what??? Going to Greece at the end of august for a few days with Will. She is going out for two all you can eat Chineses next week....looking forward to it! Its her uncles bday tonight so she is leaving early to celebrate

Katie: Just got back from Spain, very tanned. Just working through her last college assignment then looking for a new job.

Laura.J: Went out on Tuesday night for Clarks bday. The taxi driver fancied her and drop her off last so he would have her all to himself....he called her baby....but apparently he calls all people that. She wanted you to know she ate a blackberry. And she didn’t get with liam britten...still telling that lie

Catherine: She can’t remember when she last saw you......ehhhh you’re leaving do perhaps?! Haha had her retake. She thinks she done ok......She misses you and is now giggling like a little girl. This is her second time celebrating clarks bday this week. I’ve listened to Xavier Rudd and I like it....but it still reminds me of Herbert from family guy.

    To be continued....

OK now news from the world:

Charlotte said if you need to start a fire and everything is damp....and you’re beginning to lose hope....use a tampon!

Katie wants to go back outside now so we shall say farewell.

Great photos (it took me a while to work out what you were trying to spell), and a great report from Kai. It all sounds fab. By now u will have started the trek. I hope it's as rewarding as phase 1 & that u are able to stay dry. We had a great w/e, with lots of sunshine! (yes it happens sometimes...) The French football match went v well, they lost but thoroughly enjoyed their visit. The beer was flowing at the BBQ as u can imagine... Our MX5 run went really smoothly. 22 cars thru lovely countryside. I'll tell u more by letter. Thinking of u loads. Lots of love. Mum xx

Great to hear you're getting intimate with soil and dirt-could give your father a hand here. Sounds like everything is going well-are you vegetarian yet...or at least bored of daahl? You MUST see the new Harry Potter-saw it in 3D last week; a hundred times better than the rest.
We saw Emily walking Stanley-very surprised as thought she was in South America! Didn't have the chance to chat.
Off to Croatia tomorrow...hopefully I'll learn how to sail a bigger boat this time.
See you in three weeks! xxx

Just had a very noisy bridge night at our house. Karin's was too dusty and full of boys so it shifted to us. Charlotte left tonight for Croatia and Daddy retreated to the study to try and escape cackles. Off to another funeral tomorrow.
Murphy very demanding; we need you here to shoulder some of the burden. I expect you are working pretty hard there, judging by the photos.
Some info from Dundee about ID cards for which you will need a passport photo when you get home.
    lots of love, mummy

Charles was home this weekend and will not be back again until you come home. He gets measured for his uniforms but also has the dreaded 'log race' on Wednesday morning. Daddy played golf yesterday, badly, and must have looked a bit odd in his flat cap and knee socks. I'm sure you can picture it.
I need a good pudding recipe for Thursday night as bridge back here again. Better still, I need you here to make it for me!
Rachel coming for tea this afternoon so will find out what gossip she has. I have some very interesting news regarding David which we learned at the funeral.
    lots of love, mummy
