Moustache Mania – Expedition 12J Supports ‘Movember’

Inspired by the splendid state of moustachery in India, several Venturers and PMs of Raleigh India's Expedition 12J have decided to take up the Movember challenge and help raise money towards the fight against prostate cancer.

Please support us!

What is Movember?

Movember (Moustache-November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year to raise funds and awareness for men's health.

It's responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Each participant (or ‘Mo Bro’) begins on the 1st of November with a clean shaven face. For the entire month they have to grow and groom a moustache. There can be no joining of the mo to the sideburns (that’s considered a beard), no joining of the handlebars to the chin (that’s considered a goatee) and each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.

Mo Bros become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November, raising awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the issue of men’s health.

Those who are rising to the challenge are: Alex, Ali, Angus, Blair, Dan, Dave, George, Gilles, Graham, Rory, Sam, Seth and Simon.

Clean-shaven Blair - The main instigator
A fine example of Indian moustachery
How Can You Support Us?

Just enter  http://mobro.co/raleighindia12j  into your browser to go to our Movember donation page and donate as much or as little as you feel able. After 30 November we’ll let you know how much we’ve raised.

Progress Updates

I’ll aim to provide an update around second changeover – 18/19 November – when everyone is back at Fieldbase and we can see how they’re doing. Although this is a charity event and not a competition, I’ll also try to post any particularly amusing or impressive moustaches as soon as possible after 30 November when we can get photographs, as the teams will be out on Phase 3 by then.

Zus, geniet daar super! Geniet! xxx flo

Hi Angus - hope you are settling into your new project and are having a good time. So hard just to send messages and not hear from you. We can only guess if you are enjoying yourself by scrutinizing the photos. You look happy but wondered why you weren't on the last 2 group photos. My heart missed a beat, but then I wondered if you had been ill? or in the loo? or actually taking the photo? We are all thinking about you and talking about you a lot and discussing your adventures. Raining here today - you'd hate it. Much more fun where you are. Last week was very Laverstokey though. Jamie and Tom organised a firework party. We had a bonfire, sausages and baked potates at the Jolly's, then went onto the milleniuum green where Tom and Jamie, Phil and Patrick all ran around with head torches lighting the fireworks. It was freezing and we were all standing on our heels as we couldn't bear to put our whole feet on the group it was so cold! When we got back home, Biscuit was hiding under the table shivering with fear from all the bangs, then came wriggling out and grinned at us for the next half an hour as she was so relieved we were home. Last night me and Dad went to see Skyfall (new James Bond) with Mike and Anne. Ted came too. It was really, really good - you would love it. We will get it for Xmas for your stocking! Elspeth went to Lydia's with Alice for another firework party and now is back home revising. She has her science GCSEs this week and is so looking forward to the end of it. She has been revising on and off for weeks. She is much more disciplined than you were! but we forgive you! Parsnip has lost the fur from his bottom and the end of his tail so his tail looks like a lollipop and everyone is laughing at him. He is starting to show his age poor thing. The builders have come around this week to match up the colour of the bricks for the conservatory. Biscuit is in love with them and spends all her time with her paws on their shoulders. Luckily they like dogs - at least they say they do. Perhaps they will change their mind when they have had to put up with her for a bit - as we have!
Your current project looks pretty challenging - sleeping in bashas and cooking for yourself - very different from the village. Really looking forward to reading the blogs. Will write again on here next Sunday. particularly looking forward to seeing photos of you with a moustache mmmmmmmm.
We all miss you and send you a massive hug and lots of kisses. We are all planning lots of Xmas parties for when you get home
Love Mum and Dad and Elspethxxxx

    Hi Daniel

Just arrived back home after a few days in Birmingham. Graham took Jo and I to the place you managed to dance on stage and we also went into the famous burning pasty pub! I'm sure your moustache will look superb on your return to England - don't shave it off before arriving home as I too am growing one for Movember!

Latics had a superb 1-0 win away at Spurs on Saturday - Grandad's best player (Watson) scored the only goal - we're now 12th in the table!

Back to school for us both tomorrow, had a good week off, done a few jobs (including making another fence on the other side of the summer house) and had good trips to York and Birmingham.

Hope you settle in with your new group and hopefully a bit more protein this time round, instead of just rice and pasta!

Good luck, lots of love, Dad, Jo, Morgan, Eleanor, Merrie & Archie xx

Love you tot snel weer, Erik.

Bies is helemaal oké!

Hi Blair mum here. You seem to be enjoying your expedition and finding your hidden talents. Have enjoyed reading your e-mails. As you know its my birthday today and I got such an unexpected surprise to get the lovely flowers and chocs. Thankyou very much they are beautiful red roses. Kirsty and I have had a super day we had a huge cup cake for a birthday cake. The cruise is a disant memory now but I thoroughly enjoyed it especially Venice. Good luck with Movember you are in competition with Graham can't wait to see the pictures. Hope you are enjoying your current project and the bamboo basha is still standing.

  14. Hi there was hoping there might be some more news of you all but so far no sign. I guess it's not quite a week since you went on your new mission. I was hoping that perhaps you could build us a biogas unit in the garden. Nelson can make the necessary available for conversion.

I will get another letter off to you this week. We are on the eve of another US presidency election. Just hope they have enough sense to re-elect Obama..watch this space for news xxlove mum xx

  19. Hi Rory! We are just back from a weekend in Prague - really interesting and beautiful place and amazingly cheap (it was really hard to spend more than £25 on dinner for two including all drinks). Walked and walked - the city and the parks are beautiful and the air is incredibly clear - also its only just over a week before I go to the desert so thought it would be good to practice, bit hard on Dad's knees though! Lots of very quirky museums, like the KGB museum run by a very knowledgeable Russian (loads of James Bond type gadgets, like a gun disguised as a packet of cigarettes, and spy equipment, like a very nasty garrotting wire, lots of information about the labour camps and so on) and the gastronomy museum (if an ancient Egyptian offered a girl beer, he was asking her to marry him, and prehistoric human stomachs were designed to eat carrion- ie rotting meat). Kit is home for the week and laughed to hear you are doing Movember - we are all looking forward to seeing the photos! Digs has had some more teeth out but still seems happy. Hope this next phase is good fun - you always did like digging and from the reports of the last team it sounds as though you will be getting lots of it - pity it's mud not sand!
Looking forward to seeing the next blogs.

Hello Jenny I hope you're having a fantastic time on your second toilet building jamboree!
I bet you'll have arms like tree trunks by the end of this trip!
Plenty going on here, I finally got my office but it is 26 miles away (or 30 if you get lost) in Kendal.
We will be there until January when the office in Penrith is ready.
Rachel started today, she seems really nice and the North East reporter Marc starts next week - so we are nearly up to speed now.
I'm off to a foodbank in Workington on Wednesday for a story and all being well Bob will be in the paper on Sunday (Armistice Day).
Amy and Lou coming up at the weekend which will be really nice and Tim in a couple of weeks.
I'm sure your second project is going just as well as the first so keep smiling and shoveling, love Ben

Yes, I forgot to put your ID nbr on the message last night!
Anyway, here I am back on the blog having given you all a bit of a break.
Just have a bit of sports news for you Anna, Green Moon won the Melbourne Cup yesterday. Of course, no-one had heard of him and he started at 22-1, so someone has made a bit of money no doubt. In the F1 at Abu Dhabi last weekend, 1. Raikonnen, 2. Alonso & 3. Vettel who started from Pit Lane with a penalty for running out of fuel in Q3, and then he zoomed through the pack to come 3rd! Webber was involved in a crash with about 4 other cars, so sadly DNF and neither did Hamilton. So Vettel just hangs on to the World Championship at the moment. Next weekend they are in the US at a new course and the final race is in Brazil. The Wallabies take on Les Bleus this weekend, not sure where, somewhere in Europe. I'd put my money on Les Bleus if I were a betting person. The cricket starts on Friday at the Gabba v. South Africa - yay! Shane Watson is out again (!) with hamstring trouble, in spite of the fact that they sent him home early from the 20/20 Tournament, so he could be in top form for the test!! However, Ponting has declared that we should be able to beat them - we shall see.
It's been very hot here and today quite humid. We had a short heavy storm tonight - although possibly not as bad as you have been experiencing in India!
Hope your logs store is under control and under guard!
    Lots of love,
    Mum

    Hee carly!
Hoe is t leven daar? Nog steeds hetzelfde? Hihi
Hele dikke kus en lebbers, you can call me callyyyy!

Dearest Loulibelle, how goes it? How many toilets have you dug? I hope you get to christen them first!
So whats the weather like out there, I would expect this project you are not getting beaten up by the leeches or are they just everywhere?
So your getting fed by locals, I hope you are jotting down the receipes for all those lovely curry dishes you are sampling and I hope taking lots of photos. Would seem lots of hilarity at the end of the last project and well done for wining the skit competition. So the prize was biscuits is it really that bad out there?
Had a phone call from your father the other night enquiring about the address to send parcels, so expect great things next turnaround!!
Let me know if there is anything you are desperate for. Everything here going christmastastic, would look like we might have a crowd down for christmas so i need to get my thinking hat on.
Party this weekend so have made all the beds in the lodges ready, Andrew has made the goulash, barrell of beer in place and everyone bringing a plate of something, so should be fun. Lynda & Jay down tomorrow night as are the Powells. Even got Andrew parents making an appearance. Will have to be on my best behaviour!!!!!
We are off to Padstow now doing a bit of chrimbo shopping got an offer on at Joules so everyone is having hats and gloves and maybe a look in Rick Steins deli!! Might even manage to wangle a lunch out. Hope your having lots of fun and really enjoying your experience. Lots of love and speak soon xxxxANJG XX

Verheug me je binnenkort weer even te spreken!! kus,kus

    Hallo Fre,

Hier is alles oke. Was heel gezellig. Dikke knuffel,Oma.
