News from Charlie One – Immersed in Gandanahalli

On this last of four blogs from Anna’s and my recent trip around the projects, I’m posting some photos I took that I hope will give you a flavour of Gandanahalli. This is the village where Charlie One are living (in a school) and working (building eco sanitation toilets). It’s by far Expedition 12J's largest village, with a population of around 7,000 people.

You’ll also see a very short video of your loved ones waving hello as they set off for an afternoon’s work.

But first and foremost, here’s a guest blog kindly written by Jocelyn, giving her impressions of living and working in this fascinating, tightly packed rural community.

We’ve been having bandales of fun here, while working hard of course. This community phase has placed our banter-filled group in the village of Gandanahalli, with the task of building ten eco sanitation toilets. Although this may sound like quite a simple task, I shall quickly share with you some of the daily challenges that Gilles may even describe as hair-raising, that we are faced with.

Obviously there is the constant language barrier, which is a day-to-day struggle, especially when mixing with cultures so different from your own. Yes, Dan’s northern ways have been difficult for us all to adapt to.

The northern tongue is not the only difficulty our group of twelve has had to overcome. There is also the constant threat of vicious and exotic animals, such as the charging cows, bands of rampant roosters and grizzly goats which have been fought quite bravely by the likes of Ali, Fabian and Pauline. And forced us always to walk in pairs wearing our PPE or protective equipment with Raleigh pride.

Although by now I’m sure you’ll all be aware just how tough this project has been and will continue to be, I will share with you the worst of our struggles brought to us by the naivest and most innocent of the community. A simple question which brought our group near to despair: ‘ What is your name?’ And even when our weary and tired selves succumb to answering the children who surround us at every opportunity, we do not always get the response we may have hoped for - as Miaow, formerly known as Mel, has discovered.

However, our time here at Gandanahalli has not all been trial and tribulation. After a hard day’s work alongside the fast-paced masons, the ‘top lad’ with the simple ring of his bicycle bell can lift our spirits, as he brings delicious meals to our mess tins. He has become our hero of the night, and afternoon, although he has yet to win the battle against Ali’s forever rumbling stomach. We’re planning a special treat for Harry’s birthday, but it won’t be anything too rich out of respect for Laura’s keen sense of smell!

With an Indian Sean Connery who looks uncannily like Shivam by our side, and Raja’s persistent hard work and constant smile, alongside Emma’s musical talents, the ecosan toilets are standing proud through the rubble of bricks and scaffolding. And as we retire to our classrooms each night, with Pauline blushing a crimson red, after numerous winks and kisses have been thrown at her, and Fabian is settled into his sleeping bag listening to Stephen Fry uttering the sweet words of Harry Potter, we can rest easy, knowing that our hard work is paying off.

To complement the picture already in your mind's eye, here are some of the sights:

The daily commute to work - by vehicle ...
... or on foot
Accommodation can be quite basic ...
... or more sophisticated
Life revolves around animals and farming
Everywhere the children - these smartly dressed kids are on their way to Charlie One's host school
School lunchtime

Meanwhile, back at some of the worksites ...
Jocelyn proving she can handle a trowel as well pen a blog
Ali and the person formerly known as Mel
The actor, the singer and the blusher
Birthday girl

If you haven't seen the person you care about yet, fear not! Here's everyone saying a quick hello.

Difficult to believe, but it's less than a week now until the teams return to Fieldbase for Second Changeover. Meanwhile I'll update you on any news as and when I receive it.

Thanks for the great blog Jocelyn, the exotic animals sound like a nightmare! I'm exhausted just reading about all the hard work you are all doing but it looks as if you are all doing an amazing job.

    Hoi Joris.

    Hi Daniel

Glad your educating the others in our 'northern' ways! Who said there is no north/south divide! Sounds like your all having a great time and it's lots of fun. Loved the video- man of few words as ever.

Been really quiet without you and can't wait to see you next week again! Will have to move out the resident that has been staying in your room (all Eleanors' things). Edward says it still smells of you though!!

You'll feel the cold here when you are back.

Hope you really enjoy the last week of your adventure in India.

    Lots of love

    Mum, Bernard and Eleanor xxx

    Hiya
Seen the video, what's happened to the shorts? Glad to see that you are having such a good time...the loos look very professional...maybe you can take over Godfrey's job, he is building a wall by the barn at the moment. All's well here...Grannie really enjoyed the rugby, England thrashed Fiji...Theo is out at the weekend and is going to the next game. Are you going to write on the blog and is there a film in the making? I have met a producer who you can meet, he is down at weekends and he knows Paul. I guess you will be back in base camp soon and then off on the trek which will be amazing judging by the photos I have seen. Glad to hear you have not got bored of HP. Watch out for the roosters they are far more dangerous than cows and goats. Miss you, lots of love Mummy xxx

  9. Jocelyn,

Thankyou for the message, it came just at the right time and was well needed! So glad to hear and see so much about your adventure from the blogs lately.

Just to keep you updated, Hugo has entered the jungle for this year's I'm a Celebrity.. Oh and as far as the new series is going, I'm hating everyone apart from Binky. ESPECIALLY JAMIE. Never thought I'd say that.

Uni is a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun. So much fun I'm currently on antibiotics due to a chest infection! All these new northern diseases my immune system isn't used to!

OHHHHH by the way, I finally replaced my phone! Which is good news for everyone involved and on my home screen is a countdown till you are home. (Don't get too pleased with this kindness, I'm sure it won't last.)

    Well I'm sure everyone is bored of hearing about my life now, but seeing as you wanted to be updated and I hadn't posted in a while thought I'd give you a little treat!(;

Take care and I'll see you in 28 days! :D
    Lots of love xo

P.s. Where's my mention in these videos?

  10. Hey Melis. Just checked out your blog. Sounds like you're all working pretty hard. I presume you still have fun with the down time. Things in melbourne are going well. Katie has finished her course and has started working at Mossman. She's doing extra shifts at Famous footwear because they're a bit short staffed. She's been promoted to team leader. They wanted her to be store manager but she declined because it locks her into the store and she wants to leave her options open for any prospective full time employment. Uncle trevor and I visited your mum and dad on the weekend. The Violas were a mass of little busy bees. Dad was stoking the pizza oven, Sim was rolling out the pizza dough, Jessie was making brucetta and an assortment of goodies with greg and your mum was roasting mushrooms, tomatoes and who knows what. It was absolutely delicious. Even your dad's pizzas turned out good. John and Josie were there too so we had a fun night. All else is well on the home front. Weather in Melbourne... ahh could be better. Its great to see what you've been up too. It looks like to much hard work for me. Can't imagine Katie sleeping amongst the creepy crawlies. She is a bit like her mother. For now lots and lots of big kisses from us all. Will keep in touch. Stay safe and try not to step in any elephant dung..... Love you

    xx Zia mim

Even een berichtje vanuit Wassenaar. Ik zit bij opa die thuis in bed ligt en erg ziek is. Hij heeft weer last van zijn hart.
Hoop dat jij veel plezier hebt en je best doet als metselaar. Het filmpje getuigt van veel plezier.

I can't believe that your second phase is already coming to an end. Sounds like you had amazing time, even if hard work was on the daily agenda. So, you're off tracking next week. I hope you get to meet Troy's friends!
We're supposed to go to Nottingham today to start the final clearing of the house. It is finally sold! Guess what though, we are waiting for the phone call to confirm the final arrangements for today! I'll let you know tomorrow how we got on.
The weather is really miserable here, typical November. Soak up the sun whilst you can! Love you lots mum, dad and the rest xxxxxxxxx

  13. Hi Fabian,

Thats a strong look you have got going on there. Not a huge amount to report from home other than that chelsea are looking increasingly average by the game, we have Juventus away tonight though so fingers crossed.

I hear you are about to go on your final phase, the trek. All I can say is good luck, you get used to it and by the end will be able to run up a mountain. We all miss you and cant wait to have you home and hear all about your time out there. Also have fun on your travelling afterwards, I am told Goa is real fun so make sure you party properly.

All love from your wonderful and highly inspirational brother.

    Hugo
