Welcome to the official blog for Raleigh India 12I | July - August 2012

Welcome to the Official Blog for Raleigh India 12J September - December 2012.

Wednesday 3 March 2010

Lets get this party started! Venturers are here!

It is early, we are all a bit hazey but awake with the help of some coffee as we hang the laminated green Raleigh logo over the metal railings and wait for the first Raleigh venturers to appear through the airport terminals. It is not really that hard to identify our new arrivals as they appear wearing their Raleigh t-shirts a little bit pastey from a British winter and full of that eager, nervous anticipation that the project managers all felt just a few weeks ago. Excitement and chatter fill the air as a new group begin to bond at the start of their new adventure and journey. Wooop woop!

We embark on the journey from Bangalore to field base and fresh eyes and ears take in their new surroundings. Voices chat and I smile as I hear the delight and surprise as people see the first cow wander freely across the road and the laughter as the car horns are used continously as cars weave manically across the roads. We descend on field base and the venturers are welcomed by the awaiting project managers. The fun has begun.

Group introductions, names are learnt and the first plans are formulated.

Tents and bashas are made into new homes.

The hard work for today is done and it is time for some down time as people choose to relax in a variety of different ways before the sunsets.

Mum, Jelz, Doug, Freddie, grandparents, Robert, John, etc etc etc and I send our love. Your fish are still alive and we've nearly cleared enough space to get a hoover into your room. We're also trying hard to navigate through the process of applying for accommodation at uni, but that has claimed one scalp so far and will probably get another before we conquer it. From the photos India looks a whole lot cleaner and tidier than Maidstone - enjoy!! Luv Dad xx

  71. HATTIE! So you know you said this was really easy to use - I've definitely spent about 10 minutes trying to work out how to post here! Nay mind, I am now so technologically amazing making my first ever blog (I hope you feel privileged - next stop Skype).

So since you've been gone the following has happened

Saturday- we went to Len's and you were highly missed. We got wholly drunk and got the yearbook out and read all our pages (including yours!) It was really nice reminiscing though. Later on in the night I managed to get myself on facebook (bad shout) and did some facebooking under the influence which wasn't really that successful!

Since then I've had two interviews (eek!) but... I got both of them! (Addleshaw and Taylor Wessing) - so pleased as was beginning to give up all hope of ever being employed.

And finally last night Len, David and I went to Brown's for a farewell drink with Len before she buggers off to Malawi on Saturday (can't believe you're all abandoning me sniff).

Then tonight I'm going to Bristol for Docker's birthday - that's my week in a nutshell (ooo I'm in a nutshell)

So, onto more important things! I hope it's all going well in India and you've found yourself in a rockpool. I hope you're tanned already and getting dreadlocks and other fantastic gap year tragedy things (so jealous! It's freezing here)

    Missing you loads willy bum,

  77. A message for David Mahoney

Hi Dave. Thanks for the email, I was so happy to hear from you. You managed to get on the group photo - well done, its great to see your face. It's nice to know you are fine and sounds like you are having a great time. I'm impressed with the "chicken preparation" - and watch out for the snakes! Weather here is cold, wish I was somewhere hot. Emailed Matt to tell him about this blog, so I expect you will probably hear from him soon. Forwarded email to the girls and Grandad. They will be pleased to know you are ok. Be in touch soon - will follow the blog with interest. Love you loads, Mom xxxx

  80. Hi Rosie, Dad here, just saying hello. Friday night in sunny Reedley, phew what a scorcher, it must have reached at least 9 degrees here today. Cats behaving as they usually do, so I had to bury one of God's little creatures the other day, and then again Lulu jumping off my head at 2am. So, nothing has changed there, then. Mum has got that post she was after, by the way, and the new car is very nice. Full of that new car smell, and the plan of attack for tomorrow, is that we are having a run out to Ripon. Take care, contact when you are able to, but just remain safe. Dad and Mum. xx xx. and cats, of course.

Have met some really great people and we are finding out about our first project tomorrow and setting off on Sunday so you probably wont hear from me for a while as I wont have my mobile here. I feel ready for it after all the training and I am really excited. Getting used to the heat and the spicey food. There are so many amazing things to see here I will be boring with you with pictures soon! Also I am sending the postcards tomorrow so I am not sure when they will arrive. Thinking of you all.

  100. To mum and dad and all family and friends who have successfully found the blog.
Its day 5 in India and its been pretty amazing so far. The schedule has been so hectic and the challenges tough. We have had a lot of training all week and walked through the local village had an epic trek and been to Mysore the nearest city to experience the markets. Bonkers is the only word to describe it!
Settled into the heat now and I am the whitest person here and have attracted a few odd looks from the locals. We are deploying for projects tomorrow so take no news as good news as communication is tough. If you leave me messages on here I will do my best to reply.

Still alive and see you in a few weeks

Hey, how is it all going? I went to see a flat in Belsize Park today with Grandma and Grandpa. Was actually very nice. Mummy and Daddy will probably go to see it as well so will have to let you know what happens...if anything! I had my murder mystery party last night. It went really well. Mummy cooked all the food which helped massively.

Grandma and Grandpa thought you might be interested to know that FIFA wanted to put a large screen in Regents Park to televise the World Cup for a month for 20,000 people. There has been so much opposition that the application has been withdrawn. Grandma and Grandpa support this decision to have it withdrawn!

James Ward won the first match in GB's match in the Davis Cup against Lithuania in 3 sets but Dan Evans lost in 5.

Everyone has been looking at your pictures on the blog. We managed to find you in two photos!!!

    For JULIET CAMERON-WILSON
I just realised this may be the only time I can get a message to you before your birthday on Saturday (and I do hope you get it before then!). What a wonderful country to spend your birthday in -- I do hope it will be deliriously happy!!! Don't forget I gave you a card to open on the day.
You made me the happiest person ever at 7.28 on the 20th!!
I love you with all my heart,
    Little Mama xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    For JULIET CAMERON-WILSON
    My favourite daughter,
It looks like you're having a wonderful time. I am so, so happy for you. Carpe diem and all that. Montague sends his love and wants you to know that he's happy and eating regularly. I'll give him a special hug on your birthday and we'll play Slinky on the stairs in your honour. I hope you have a fantastic birthday - no doubt it will be one that you will never forget!
    I love you,
    Papa xxx
