Charlie 1 are so impressive they make the papers!

“Getting to Ealamanna”
by Nick Finegan

I am sitting on a bus which as I write lumbers through the arid Indian countryside. Outside it is a predictably unbearable and all pervading, stagnant heat.

Karnataka pulsates with this still burden everyday which at around 9am awakens to slump itself across India like a great lazy slab. Inside the bus spirits are high as Charlie One career towards the green and tiny Ealamanna, edging ever closer toward our paradisiacal new home. As someone who loves writing, India provides a creative feast. Women draped in kaleidoscopic saris, men chatting and puffing on pipes, children playing and cows sleeping and the vibrancy of India pounds.

Inside Charlie One certainly rivals India for vibrancy, buzzing with chat and bonding over bus seats. I personally feel like we have been lucky with our group; a good mix of characters – funny, clever, deep or silly we have it, and throw in some of your best PM's on the job and it's safe to say that Charlie One are the best of the bunch. Biased I am clearly not.

The bus veers left on to a crumbling sandy path, five minutes on it slows and shrouded in fresh jade foliage the petite but perfectly formed village of Ealamanna peeks at us from its nest at the bottom of the hill. Greeted with garlands we drink in the view. The surrounding countryside is simply stunning.

Dark mountains just upwards dramatically petering out into tea plantations that coil around the steeply sloping hills like an emerald sari and for the next three weeks all of this is ours to call home. This escapes not one member of Charlie One – smiles resound.

by Nick Finegan

We cross three states to visit Charlie One to find out what they are up to; starting in Karnataka at field base, onwards through Kerala and finally into the state of Tamil Nadu we eventually arrive. The group met us with bright, smiley faces and straight away before we even unpack we are treated to a tea picking demonstration from the local villagers and we are invited to get involved. The tea plantations currently provide one of the main income streams into the village and we are told that nothing short of two leaves and  one bud will be accepted by the tea factories. The locals pick with precision and speed and we, well we do our best.

Charlie One have integrated themselves into the heart of the tribal community of Ealamanna and they eat, sleep and work in the village. The Centre for Tribals and Rural Development, (CTRD), one of our project partners, have their office sitting neatly amongst the houses and their vision hangs over the entrance to their office as a gentle reminder as to why all this work is so important.

"The vision of the organisation is to empower the tribals to become self sufficient and improve their living conditions without losing their cultural and environmental identity."

The village of Ealamanna will be used as a model to educate and train other tribal villagers in the Nilgiris to include bio gas and sanitation into their villages. The benefits of the bio gas will prevent the need for the villagers to take materials from the forests and Raleigh are building the village a cow shed and are providing 8 cows. The dung from the cows will produce gas and the village will be able to sell milk and cheese to provide the village with another income stream.

Digging appears to have become an obsession at Charlie One. They have dug a hole so big we had a debate as to whether you would survive if you fell in. Take a look.......

We will, we will .....Dig It
We will, we will ......Dig It
We've got mud on our face, its not a race
but we're progressing at a remarkable pace
Singing We will, we will .......Dig It
We will, we will, Dig It

Singing lots of songs, passing many bowls
Working til the clock hits five and dongs

Singing We will, we will......Dig It
We will, we will, Dig It

Cricket with a kid, hitting many a 6
Losing all battles and stopping when we did

Singing we will, we will ...Dig It
We will, we will........ Dig It

by Alan Smithies

They have done so well they have attracted the interest of the local press and I have scanned in the article for you and provided a translation so you can see what the local papers have had to say.

Bio Gas Units are being installed in Tribal villages

Gudalur, March 16:

Bio gas units are being installed in Eallamanna tribal village to improve the living standard of the community. Centre for tribals and rural development trust in partnership and with the financial support from Raleigh India; have started installing bio gas units in the tribal villages of Pandalur Taluk. This project has been started in the Eallamanna tribal village for 7 tribal families. A cow shed which can accommodate 8 cows, bio gas units, cow dung storage unit are being built in this village under the supervision of Mark by the foreign volunteers. The Managing director of the Centre for tribals and rural development trust stated that tribal communities are reliant on fire wood from forest for fuel, which in turn effects the habitat conservation, and the tribal communities can’t afford for LPG gas connections. Tribal communities show big interest in cattle rearing, the bio gas project in Eallamanna is a pilot project. This project will reduce the need for firewood and the community can also have income from dairy products and manure. CTRD is also planning to link the communities with the Kadhi board for subsidized loans to cultivate cattle fodder. This project would benefit the environment and the community. This project is great opportunity to improve the living standard of tribal communities.

Boys plaster the side of the cow shed

and Nev puts the finishing touches on the cattle shed

The masons finalise the bio gas structure in readiness for the grand opening on the 25th March. I will keep you updated with the continuing press coverage that this project is attracting! Also as a sneak preview I know that the girls have had saris made up to wear to the final party so watch out for the photographs they are going to be worth the wait.

So enough work, what have they been doing for fun...........

Reading the messages on the blog

James manages to get the World Service on the radio and sneaks a cuppa on the veranda before guiding the troops to work everyday.

Yoga lessons on the roof in the morning

The creativity, imagination and energy that is Charlie One is symbolised by the Ealamanna Cup. One league, five boys and the ultimate prize, the Ealamanna Cup.

There are five roles, the commentator, the referee, the goalie, and the two competing sides that fight to score.

.
A bit of argie bargie that is sorted by the ref

The proud winner Chris Devlin who takes Linfield FC to a glorious and tense victory decided on goal difference.

Also we are treated to a roof top production that could have been produced by Rada. I couldn't have been more impressed by this group.

And finally I will leave you with some thoughts from Juliet Cameron Wilson which are potentially deeper than the bio gas pit!

“ Life is calling”
by Juliet Cameron Wilson

This is the line that adorns many a Raleigh t-shirt. This is the line that has inspired many a young person to temporarily throw aside their normal daily life in hope of embarking upon a life changing adventure of culture, challenge and charity. This is the line that epitomises Raleigh.

On one level it may appear nothing more than a relevant catchphrase with an appropriate message. However it is so much more. These two simple sentences call into question our very concept of life, of living. “What is the meaning of life?” is a query so commonly pondered that it has become a cliche. It is frequently employed to demonstrate the characteristics of an over thinker, a Hamlet, who thinks rather than acts. It is ridiculed. Nonetheless, it remains the most poignant, profound question that man can ask.

Perhaps the average person’s refusal to take it seriously is a reflection of society's reluctance to think; a fear that if one stares too intently into the mirror they may not like what they see. Many people in Western Society are stuck in a rut: perpetually waiting for their lives to begin. They live for the weekend and put dreams on hold just until that ever sought after promotion is attained. More time is spent toiling over papers than drinking up everything that this incredible life has to offer.

Raleigh offers an alternative. Raleigh offers an opportunity to experience new sights, smells and sensations. To stand small and breathless in awe of the power of nature, the vastness of beauty that is Ealamanna landscape. To be enveloped by tea plantations, swamped by majestic mountains, consumed with a sense of elation, of wonder of spirituality.

To hear that gleeful ring of Pombay’s laughter or to see the gentle curve of Schoba’s smile. To feel the subtle buzz of spices on your tongue, the delicate, yet pungent, exciting new flavours of an authentic tribal dish. To collapse with both exhaustion and satisfaction at the end of a hard day’s work. To feel proud as progress is steadily made, lives steadily improved. Then there are the relationships formed; the bonding over bricks. Memories are shared, memories are created.

In the words of Oscar Wilde “ to live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” All of us have a choice. Make yours wisely.

He is moving in a couple of days and will be out of phone contact from then on. I'm sure you must be well on the way with your project and hope to see more photos as soon as we get back. Have really enjoyed reading about all the different projects - they all look so worthwhile and a test and challenge for everyone.
BIG thanks to the Raleigh India team - they are doing an amazing job with all the photos & blogs and I'm sure I must be one of many parents who are grateful for all the news and photos. There can never be enough but keep up the good work!

    Happy Birthday Little Bug!
I set my alarm this morning for the time you were born so I could send birthday wishes all the way to Ealamanna for you. Hope there was somewhere you could hang your banner and that you remembered to open your card.
You've had a message from Nana and Mort, but Mort sent it anonymously and didn't sign it. Shirley's sent you one from her family, and Allan said he was going to send a message too. Nigel came to see me in Amersham last night, and he wishes you a happy birthday (but as you know he doesn't do computers). Kitten and Pig are missing you, but we're going to buy them some presents in your honour later this afternoon.
I'm going to senior prize-giving Friday, and I'll pick up your examination certificates (as well as having a good natter with Mr Radway et al!)
I know you're loving your time there. Drink it all in. With a straw.
    I love you, forever,

    To Juliet Cameron-Wilson:
    My favourite daughter,
I have been thinking of you so much today and telepathically sending you birthday wishes. I gather from the blog that you’re having quite an awesome time. I really do look forward to hearing your personal adventures – what you’ve been eating, what snakes you’ve befriended, your new discoveries, and so on. Today I have been basking in filial nostalgia and have been leafing through old photographs of you, many of which I don’t even remember!
I loved your blog – beautifully written and with gobs of cerebral nourishment. You really are a poster child for Raleigh International! I wonder if you’ve had any time to read? It’s interesting that India produces more daily newspapers than any other country in the world… I thought you ought to know that. Give my regards to Nick and Anna.
I miss you and love you so much,
    Papa xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

P.S. You can read my letter today if you have the time…

I have been checking this blog religiously for word of you (worthwhile procrastination from my dissertation) and finally you have been spotted. The pictures look amazing!! You have all done so well. Very very very proud of you. I'm missing you terribly. When you're not here no one ever one bells me thye just call me normally! I still haven't applied for my masters but it looks very probable that I will be in manchester next year. Fancy being my roomie? Not sure if you want to hear about sleb gossip but Sandra Bullock's husband cheated on her, Kate Winslet and her husband have broken up, much boringness about Jen Aniston and Gerard Butler and also a thing about a pervy photographer called Terry Rhichardson who lots of models are coming out and complaining about. Some model at Paris fashion week had a big go at him and he fled whatever show he was at. Anyway you may now no longer be interested in any of that stuff but thought I'd let you know. I'm seeing Liz and Lucy later at art of tea. I hope you are enjoying yourself. It looks like you are. Missing you lots and lots. Hope to hear from you soon. Amy xxxxx

This is George, we saw your mum last night at prize giving and she gave us this link to talk to you, woo! Just read your blog, very deep thoughts which is good to hear, the photos look amazing and i am incredibly jealous. Your mum said your having an awesome time, and told us about your new friend Nick, good to know you've met somebody who you can really get along with, i hope he's enjoying the journey too, although i'm sure you both are. I have a week left at uni until september, which is making me all the more jealous of your travels as now i'm in london with nothing to do! However, i have a solution. I just got a full time job as a charity streetworker which is full time and pays really well, so i am thinking i'm gonna do that until late june, then i'll hopefully have raised over a grand and might just swing by to come and see you on your travels! ( money permitting o course) Mindy might try and get the same job and dop the same thing as well, which would be amazing. Really am so envious (not jealous as i said earlier, at least i think thats the wrong word) of what your days must be like now, especially now i'm back in chesham for the weekend for prizegiving, went to the misty moon last night. yay. Hopefully you get this and can write back soon, i know you can't cram everything you've seen/done in here but tell me as much as you can be bothered to! Love you loads, George xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  42. To Juliet,

This is Miranda. I really miss you, so i was so relieved when I saw your mum on friday at prize giving and said there was actually a way for me to send you messages, woo!
I always knew you'd have an amazing time and make more than the most of wherever you were and whatever you were doing, so reading your entry full of typical juliet absolute love for living and sucking up any possible experience and giving everything a deep meaning didn't suprise me in the smallest!
i just showed my friend amy your entry and she said you are inspiring :)
nothing's new with me really. i'm going to amsterdam next week. i'm so excited, and also george and me were debating coming and meeting you for a few weeks in the summer? that would be amaaaaaaazing.
also i hope you had an incredible birthday. i'm so glad you weren't here and that you could be somewhere to give you the 'crazy different' night and day you always craved but never found over here!
i hope you get to read this and that i haven't been too late. Also your mum told me and george you've made really good friends with a boy called nick who you have similar attributes with. say hi to nick from me, i'm sure he'll be a friend for life :)
    Love and miss you xxxxxxxx

  43. Message to james Brown- Charlie 1 from Uncle Mike. Your Mum and Millie are staying with us this weekend and we have just been looking at the blogs and photos. The beard is where exactly????? Karen has been inundated with texts and messages from the Edinburgh 'broken hearts' society. You are desperately missed... Just visited Dover Castle today and we were invited to take part in a Henry 11 reenactment but your Mum is now awaiting sentence in a cold damp cell for being Scottish - She tried to argue with THE King of England to say he wasn't really the Boss of her!!!! .
From the photos it looks as if you guys could make brilliant plasterers - can get you a job any time you like. Very impressive. Continue having fun and make the most of your time there. Phillip cannot wait to see you when you get back. Fancy coming to Historic Le mans with me in the summer? Barry from over the Border says 'keep digging!'.

  44. Hola Jamie, and hello James (Auntie Tracy)

Karen says we have to put MESSAGE TO JAMES, CHARLIE ONE.

Parcel will be in the post tomorrow. We won't spoil surprise, but there are plenty of goodies.

No IRN BRU as mum thought it might not survive the flight. Mike and Phil would like to take you on a trip to the Normandy Battlefields when you return. Karen says you will have to go in the Volvo as the Lotus isn't safe enough! Not with our precious cargo, ie you and Phil.

You would have loved Dover Castle, have saved going around the military museum for you to join us next time. Missing you loads, but happy that you are having a great time. Simon has requested beef on the bone for Easter Sunday - we'll be thinking of you when we are tucking in!

Auntie T now: I'm still hearing how you embarrassed Mike at Heathrow, well done! We've been having a smashing visit from your mum and Millie, have to say it's not the same without you. Phil is sooo excited with that we will coming up to Edinburgh in the summer, as I expect you can tell from his blogs. He is doing Global awareness week at school and guess which country his class will be doing? Yes, India! So he is taking in a print out of your exploits to show the class what his big cuz is up to. Looking forward to hearing all your tales. Txx

Lots of love and hugs Mum and Tracy xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  45. Hi Juliet and Nick

I bumped into - OK I was delightfully ambushed - by Juliet's ever cheerful Mum at Prize giving and promised to get in touch.Hope I've got in touch before you've launched onto the trekking.

Glad that things seem to be going so well - and Juliet's post above reminds me that my lessons this year are missing these in depth philosophical musings that suddenly emerge out of nowhere when I'm least expecting it!!!

Paddy (Mensah) is in school at the moment with two Ghanian students and they seem to have had a great time over the past week. We've also had 10 Chinese students here as well so they've amalgamated into one international group and had a great time. Needless to say Paddy is still Paddy!!

    Have a great time

Great to see you in some of the photos. You all seem to be making massive progress in your projects.I am very interested in what your group are doing. The Cow latrine is massive. Intrigued to hear how you will train the cows to use it!
Trying to follow your journey on the map. Interested to see the photos of tea picking as coincidentally I am drinking tea from the nilgiri hills these days. Also coffee from an estate in Mysore called Balmadie. Anywhere near you?
You are looking well and fit, working hard and having fun too. Can't be better. Keep up the good work!
    Love

  47. To Miranda and George,

Come, come, come! That would be amazing. Ealamanna was absolutely incredible...but now I'm trekking! I'm in so much pain its unbelievable and when I saw a mirror in the first time in weeks I honestly didn't recognize myself. I've met some great people though...I shall call you when I can and tell you all about it. Yeah, I was pretty lucky meeting such a great guy like Nick...it's so weird - it feels like we've known each other for years!

It would be so, so good if you came! And George, you should appreciate being in England if only for one reason: CHEESE, beautiful, beautiful cheese. I hope you had a splendiferous birthday Miranda and that you are really enjoying Amsterdam...
I love you both so, so much, I really do
I hope to have a good old gossip soon...once I've finished this bloody (yet, yes, amazing) trek. xxxxxxxxxxx p.s. One of my new bezzies, Guitar, says hello. woop. xxxxxx

Hi Kat, I have been looking at the pictures of the bio-sphere. The hole that you have dug is enormous!!! Sounds as if you are having a great experience out there in spite of the delhi-belly. Expect its a bit warmer there, its freezing here. Your Mum and Dad popped in yesterday and gave me your details. I've seen the pictures of you. Enjoy your time in India, you must be half way thru now?
With lots of love from Jen and Rog xxx
