The Loop Trilogy: Star Loop Episode VI – Return of the Stormtroopers

Namaskaara and welcome to the sequel of the sequel of the blockbusting Loop Trilogy. Reggie Skywalker and Joe Solo used the Force (Big Manju) to visit the far, far away galaxies of Charlie 2, Tango 5, and Echo 4
Max Dampier and Venetia Matthews formed a Rebel Alliance to narrate how Echo 4's Nellimadu fell victim to the dark side of the Force:
Group posing with their pride and joy.
Max: Fieldbase. Early morning. Coughs, moans, and soft weeping at the thought of packing fills the dorm. Sounds that quickly turn to anger upon the cry echoing from a near naked Thejas: “No water! No water! Tell Simon! No water!” The drought to hit the dorms was quickly forgotten with last minute orders and the ever dangerous loading of the buses. That done, the bus park looked like a funeral with tearful goodbyes and day leaders preaching and cajoling their flock on the coaches until at last we were away. After a journey Odysseus would have been proud of, we arrived at the majestic mountain village of Nellimadu, being greeted like new arrivals at a Hawaiian airport with garlands and beaming smiles.
The empty chair belongs to PM Rhys.
Venetia: I have to admit that one of my first thoughts upon catching sight of our campsite was “Is this really the right place???” I had not imagined a tea plantation with a large number of coconut trees dotted about at the bottom of a steep hill. However, I quickly became used to the concept that this was to become my home for the next three weeks. Excitement quickly swept the camp as the pros and cons of each potential hammock site were discussed.
Ewok 4's camp on Endor
Adorable baby Ewoks
Max: Campsite building began proper with the construction of hammocks which then led to an orchestra of ropes snapping under tension and muffled curses. Hoping for more success, we then set to digging a hole to Australia. However, as none of us had a criminal record, we had to stop and renamed the hole “long drop”.
The deep drop
Venetia: Slowly, the hammocks started to break less and just as we had begun to put a little more trust in them, the rain came.
Hay viene una tormenta!
Max: Demonic light fell across the faces of Echo 4 as they watched the rain fall, pummeling the ground like an army of AT-AT Walkers. The wind flew in breaking and tearing across the ground as it sped towards our camp. It hit. Within seconds rain whipped around our ears and danced on the plants as the wind carried it.
Venetia: It came as a nasty surprise to several members of the group to discover that the covers over the hammocks really were only “water resistant” and not “water proof”.
Max: A rescue operation was launched as Echo 4 scrambled down towards the campsite with bandaleys over their heads like a party of marauding Chinese peasants.
Venetia: With wet sleeping bags in tow the group managed to climb the very slippery hill up to the group shelter, just to discover that…
Max: … after rattling and screaming, the shelter’s roof had been carried piecemeal into the night and dinner had been rained on.
Venetia: Fortunately they were invited into the porch of one of the beneficiary’s houses…
Max: … leaving the young biogas hands to while away the night on the ol’ six string.
The ol' six string - visible and ...
... invisible - was used on a number of occasions ...
... like on PM Eleri's birthday
Venetia: This is just one example of the hospitality and kindness which the locals of Nellimadu have shown us since arriving. We have now all become well accustomed to second breakfasts. They always have a smile on their face and are constantly offering help, like lending a hand with the digging, and useful local knowledge, like the correct way to carry a bandalay on your head.

Second bananas for second breakfasts.
Shaveh using the local bike rental.
Everyone has enjoyed getting their hands dirty, digging the first two of three biogas holes at the start of the Phase. These holes are fairly huge – 12 feet by 6 feet – and look, as one member of the group aptly described them – like the marks of asteroids hitting the earth. We have all been working very hard and impressed the masons and CTRD by finishing the digging of the first two holes in just two days work – An achievement which PM Rhys reckons to be a Raleigh record.

The work is supervised by young Padawans.
It looks like the construction of a second Death Star in progress,
but they say the mesh is for the biogas dome
(oldest trick in the Sith book if you ask me...)
Phase 3 is flying by, but Echo 4 is definitely making the most of the last few weeks on Raleigh. We look forward to seeing you all soon! Keep your fingers crossed that our hammocks hold out!

And now: Messages in prose, poetry, and visual arts.

  1. TOM MITCHELL - Tango 6 Trek

Great fun to Skype yesterday! Will and Guy were muttering that they 'never got time off mid trek' on Raleigh Borneo ! (Think they were envious!). Had a fun weekend here, catering marathon. Grumitts here Saturday/Sunday - they arrived, all eight of them, in a minibus with trailer(that's what they have to have now Raff has come along!) - and then the S-D's Sunday/Monday. Lots of food and walking. We all missed you. All cousins are in good heart. Lottie now beginning to be seriously revising, term starts Monday, AS's looming. Sent a box of goodies to you last week, hope you get it. Caps, contacts, letters ... treats ... ! Get in touch at the end of Raleigh, I can always send stuff out with Jack to Bangkok. xxx

    Jules Cornelissen ( Echo 3 )

Xxx

  3. Natalie Davis Charlie 1 Hope the digging is going well. We are now back from a very wet week on the Cut. Travelling slow due to the locks being locked, lack of water. Lots of very grumpy boaters. I rekon you will all be returning to base this week. We are now back and heading full steam for 5th May! Speak soon, not so smiley Buster! He finds boating very stressful, but he is fit.XXXXXXXX

    Hi Haydn,
That was an amazing blog so many photographs of you and then a video plus a letter! It was so good to hear your voice in the video. That storm sounded nasty but guess it wasn't long until the sun was shining again. It all looks very hard work.
I'm off to Cyprus for a few days to catch some early sun myself this week it's turned so cold and wet here.
I have arranged to use David's computor on the 16th to apply for your accommodation at Exeter Birks Grange first choice, Holland Hall as second - all that must seem a life time away to you at the moment! I will have my mobile with me, and will check my emails.
Speak soon and keep eating you're looking so thin (plenty of roast dinners for you when you get home)!
    All my love,
    Mum x x x x

  7. Hi Patrick (Tango 6)

By the time you get this the expedition will be over and you will no doubt be celebrating endex (as Will tells me it is called). I'm sure you have had a fantastic time and made lots of new friends. We are looking forward to hearing all about your experiences.

Nothing much to report from here. Dad and I had a good time in Edinburgh last week. Finally got to the National Portrait Gallery. Caroline has moved in upstairs. She has brought with her lots of plants for the front steps which brightens the place up.

We are really looking forward to seeing you and have decided to do a flying visit and pop down to meet you from the train. When you get back to the UK give us a ring to let us know what time you are due in.

    Enjoy your last few days.

    Lots of love
    Mum xxx

    Lief zusje,

    Love you, xxx

  12. It's good news at last for Barney in Charlie 2. Just back from Maine Road where City cruised to a 4-0 win over the Baggies, without really breaking sweat. 2 from Kun, 1 from Carlito and 1 for Silva. And joy of joys SBs beaten at Wigan 1-0. Baconface apoplectic! A glimmer of hope resurfaces as we head to Norwich on Saturday. Just a few days left of the trek Barnes, ten the open road.
Let's hope that QPR game is worth your coming home.

  13. To Venetia - Echo 4
    Hi Venetia,
Just back from Rome and enjoyed reading your blog. Sounds like you've been having a good time digging holes and I hope the bio-gas project is successfully completed by the time you read this. The camp site looks great - well a fantastic location and cool hammocks, although I'm not so sure I would love it! We had a lovely couple of days in Rome - just missing rain there and instead enjoying lovely sunshine and saw all the main sites - Colosseum, vatican museums, St Peter's etc. You'd have enjoyed it too, but not much shopping to be done with Dad and Jamie! We have the cutest puppy Bertie - he's settling in well, endlessly chewing Mabel's legs, tail, ears etc - You'll love him and I'll try to take a photo and e-mail it to you so you can see him next week when you get to a computer, but my blackberry is misbehaving so it may not work.
Hope you have enjoyed your last week or so of Phase 3, and have a great time at the end too. Looking forward to hearing from you when you finish about what your "phase 4" plans are. We'll be around on Sunday, if you get the chance to get in touch, otherwise back to work on Monday. Have a great time, & Lots of love. Mum, Dad, Jamie & coxxxxxx

    lieve Lien

Niek, Kees, Tinneke, Maayke, PP, Ariane, Tessa.

    Hi Becky
Loved seeing your pictures on the latest blog, it looks like you are still having a great time. The hammocks look an amazing place to sleep although the storm sounds interesting!
Chickens are occasionally laying an egg - dad staged a lock in yesterday and said he wouldn't let them out of the run until they had laid one - either they are very half hearted or they have a secret bush in the garden where they are laying them. However, they are very funny and as soon as you go out outside they run over and start pecking your toes if you aren't quick to move.
I have emailed all the flight details and will put them in your dropbox too (also insurance thru World Nomad).

All hugely looking forward to seeing you sooooooooonn.
    Lots and lots of love,
    Mum (and the others too)

Anyway got to go and grab some boots etc (the usual hectic departure)but looking forward to seeing you
