Fun run and familiar faces...

Namaskaara you good people, its changeover morning and we’re busily getting field base ready for the return of the troops. So we’ve warned Betty not to pop round for a few days, asked the mouse that I just found in the bin to go and squeak elsewhere and told the toads that there will soon be hundreds of new (but very stinky) boots for them to hide in.

As well as this exciting news, we also bring you details of a fundraising event we’ll be doing at the end of expedition before the sad farewells begin. Oh dear, can’t even start to think about that yet it’s all going to be too emotional! Sniff sniff...

Right, where was I, oh yes, I remember now – once everyone is back from their final phase at the start of April, we’re all going to be taking part in a 10k run and will be asking for sponsorship to raise money towards an extra project for the next expedition.

We’ll be working with our partner CTRD to build eco-sanitation units in a tribal village called Kotapadi in the Nilgiri Hills, but we would also love to be able to build a house for one of the village families that are currently living in a tarpaulin shelter.

The house will cost 85,000 Indian rupees to build which is the equivalent of about £1,300. So if you know family and friends on expedition or have been here yourself and know how hard it’s going to be then it would be brilliant if you could sponsor us to help us raise the funds we need to help this family.

To sponsor us just head on over to our fundraising page -

It’s going to be around 40 degrees in April and even now just walking 10 yards is enough to make us break out into a sweat so it’s going to be tough, tough, tough. And we’ll be posting all the sweaty photos on here just as soon as the feeling in our legs has returned and we’ve got our breath back.

Two guys that we would love to have running with us in April are Sam Ummat and Dharmendra Patel who provided us with hours of entertainment as explorers but were here for the first phase only. Sadly they left us at the last changeover to head on to new adventures but they managed to find time to fill me on how they felt about their time with us... luckily they had a blast!

Sam, 19 from Reading

I started Raleigh and, to be honest, was a little bit unsure on what it would be like. But looking back on it now it was some of the best three weeks of my life and I wish I could have stayed for all ten! I made soo many amazing friends and saw some things that simply took my breath away and have soo many memories that I’ll remember for the rest of my life!!

It was such a worthwhile experience and I feel that I grew as a person, despite the lack of food and showers!! Thank you so much Raleigh for making it such an amazing experience and will definitely do another project in the future. Thanks!

Dharmendra, 21 from London

I can't believe its already been 8 days since I got back from my 4-week expedition in India! Four weeks at home here in London seems to take forever but with Raleigh, time certainly flies by because you're always having fun.

I chose to do the community phase - Charlie 1. In just three weeks in Vellary Village, my team and I (along with a lot of help from the masons and the locals) managed to build a cow shed, a bio-gas unit and the main structure of a house! The locals that we stayed with in Vellary considered us part of their family. They are such loving people to be with.

They gave us tea and biscuits every day, fed us with delicious spicy meals and even joined us when we had a few dance parties in the evening. When it was our time to leave to get back to field base, the family became very emotional and that made some of us cry a river too. We will all truly miss them and the beautiful, tropical, mountainous village of Vellary.

I've learned so many life skills during my time on Raleigh. How to make a successful camp fire, how to cook using trangias, basic first aid action, how to mix cement using the simplest of tools, how to sustain hygiene using the 3 bowls, how to dig a long drop toilet! The list goes on...

The people at Raleigh, staff and venturers alike, are the friendliest, kindest, most welcoming and most fun people I've ever met in my life! The irony is, now that I'm back home, not being at field base with everyone is making me feel home-sick :( I am missing them all dearly and I can't wait to meet up with some of them when they get back to London. I have made so friends and memories that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. I would definitely recommend Raleigh to anyone interested in taking an exciting journey abroad with amazing people to make a difference.

My advice - if you do chose Raleigh, DO THE FULL 10 WEEKS! :)

Now he’s set me off blubbing again! Thanks so much to those guys for their enthusiasm, hard work, fun and laughter. I know you’re both badly missed here by everyone, and Sam, I miss the messages from your mum Denise!

Right, better start doing some serious training for the run I guess. Just ran away from a dead spider and had a chocolate bar so that’s a pretty good start me thinks...

  2. To James Hollins (Echo 3),
Hi Jimmy! Hope you're ok and have enjoyed the most recent bit of your expedition! I still haven't sent your postcard I'm afraid, didn't realise 3 weeks had passed already! But I'm going to try and make sure I send it this week! Hope that you enjoy the 40 degree heat, it's raining here..
Mother tells me you're not coming home for another 2 months and 2 days, I may have forgotten what you look like! Although I'll make sure I get you a nice birthday present for when you get back (perhaps some nice aftersun and a fleece to help you re-acclimatise to the heat back in the UK). Not much news (surprisingly!) just deciding what to do for my dissertation..fascinating stuff! Enjoy the last bit of Raleigh and make sure you don't drop off the face of the planet when you go off on your own! Lots and lots of love Sarah xxxxxxx

    Hello friend,
This is Demi-god #1 sending a message to Demi-god #2. I hope they are starting to worship you already and have in fact started erecting shrines dedicated to you. If they haven't, pull out the Hand of Gul'dan and do some pwning!
Anyways, down to serious bizniss, here's what I've eaten while you've been gone (I know you'll be interested!):
    - Spaghetti Bolognese x5
    - Curry x5
    - Risotto x3
    - Chicken and pasta stuff x4
    - Apple x10
    - Chocolate bar x100
Anyway, I hope you are having a good time and that you're not getting too tanned (you know why). I've seen some of the photos as well, they look good!
Have a good remainder of your stay in India and when you get home, we'll finish our ship :)
This message will self-destruct in 0.5 seconds, better be quick! Missing you greatly,
    Tom Wells.
PS. I heard it's going to be 40 degrees in April, so I'm going to turn up the heating in our house so we can all sweat together from the opposite ends of the world. Screw the bills!

Isn't your mummy good to you!! flights changed!! and that wasn't easy either. She's fixed your car, new tyres and suspension spring on drivers side front!! golf course man has got his tractor out to start work on our greens. Daffodils coming up, birds are singing and girls are wearing shorter skirts!. There's been a punch up in the close, a builder hit a neighbour, and I missed it. Went ringing to Bristol, quarter peel of Bristol, course of Glasgow and some 8 spliced. Caught a cold gave it to your mum, we both feel better now. Your sister is coming home at the week end to her newly decorated room your mothers starting on the downstairs loo now. Just as well the snows crap this year. :-( Looking forward to seeing you on your birthday, best get some duty free. I seem to have missed the messages from you! Hows it going? Firstly, fantastic news about university. FINALLY.

This has been such a frustrating day! I missed your call this morning because I didn't recognise the number and got scared, then just as I thought it may be you it stopped ringing. Then you texted me your new number but when I call it all I get is a lady telling me you are unreachable! and You haven't replied to the texts to I assume they never got through... BUM.

Don't think I've been avoiding You or anything... I've been tearing my hair out and kicking myself all day. I wish I had picked up the phone! Oh well, at least I have the voicemail message to keep. what?

I'm glad You like the book and that my second letter also got through. Still no sign of your second letter.

I miss You very very much. I can't wait to get in touch with you properly, although that will most probably be when you get back by the way things are going with communication.

I hope the treking goes well... I can't say I envy You for this phase!

What are You planning to do if/when You stay on?

    Love, Jamie.

    Hyah Sweetheart.

It was brilliant to hear your voice!!You sounded in good spirits and very upbeat, even after your apparent weekly attacks of D&V!! Not sure what the secret to avoiding this is, maybe just an allergeric reaction to a certain food or spice. Thank Alice for the use of her phone seeing as yours is on the blink!
So, hope your mind is now at rest, and if it is what you WANT to do, then that's all that matters.
As for the next phase with Raleigh, the 3 week trek up in the hills and mountains will be amazing and very exhilarating for you and will not prove a problem with your 'toned' athletic legs! Just pitch your tent next to the long drop loo, and you'll be fine..ha..ha!!
Hope you enjoyed your baked spud Indian style.

Will love you and leave you, until the next blog!

    Take care.....

    Take care again.....

    ...ooh and above all....take care...

Some news for you. You have been offered a place at Leeds. Well done Hols. Still to hear from St Martins, should be by the end of this month. Just looked at the photo's from your treking phase, it looked fabulous. Glad to see the rucksack was rather full on one picture, hope you have had the challenge you wanted. One other thing have you changed your password on GMAIL as from yesterday afternoon (13th) couldn't get into it. Don't worry about it though as in touch with Parsons re scholarship and others will send postal letter.

Love you so much. Really looking forward to seeing you soon.

We're stll managing to cope with the Caribbean heat (and a downpour today but shortlived) without too much trouble. Off to explore Nelson's dockyard tomorrow an old |British naval base from our colonial times. It's now full of boats of the megarich - we can but ogle!

I always thought myself good at technology but I'm a bit confused, I hope this gets to you!!

Sorry that it's such a pain to need to organise this while you're obviously so busy saving the world and having wonderful times!! Although I saw you were ill - hope you're ok now lovely!

Great that we have a confirmed date to work with!! I presume you mean flying home on the 8th June. Cancel my dates I sent, I'm no longer diving!!

SO, the big thing I need to know at the moment (as you didn't say!!!!) is do you actually want to do Nepal? If I get a yes then I will know what to do with my home flights and could always book nepal later!!

And therefore, when ISH do you think I should arrive?! Around the 10th May? That gives four weeks?! Is that too much? 15th-ish might be the latest I'd want to arrive katmandu. BUT if this bit is too stressful we can work out dates later, so long as I know you're up for it, and we'll have at least 3 weeks then I will book accordingly!!!

Much much love!! Keep up the good work!! And how would I know if you replied to this?! LOL. xxx

To Scott Rae - was tango 6 but now should be in an echo team!

How are you bro?!! Sore? Looks like you had lots of fun on the trek although from the pics it doesn't look like the pirate team put too much effort into the rafting! Quite right too :-) We had a lovely weekend. Nic came to stay over on Sat night - think she was having Jamie withdrawal symptoms. Ryan and Andrene then brought Dillon and Finn on Sunday and we all went out for a lovely lunch at the loch. Weather has been rubbish. Snow at the end of last week and now justt rain. Miserable rain. Jamie and I are having a duvet day! We are all very jealous of you and now of mum and dad too getting lots of lovely sun. It's very srange not having them around just now. Can't believe thats you on the last leg. Just think you could have been making your way home now! It's fab that you managed to get the full 10 weeks. REALLY looking forward to seeing you soon. Thanks I got some fabulous flowers delivered this morning from the Shincliffe Garden Centre. I'm very impressed at how guick these came through but they are great. Have you heard what you are doing next? Also read the info about the 10K run - I've no doubt you'll be taking part but the heat sounds as if it'll be hard to bear - you should be fit enough after 2 treks though. Have a great time - which is what you seem to be doing.

Take care with the rest of your time there as I have had enough of illness and hospitals. Many thanks for the birthday wishes but unfortunatly the bangles were broken perhaps you could replace them with some nice indian tea, that is after you have paid off all your debts. Phone again when you can. Love Mum & Dad xx

  33. Clare Evans, Echo 4,
Hope you're coping with the heat - sounds just too much. Don't know how you're goinng to adjust to normal life again. Mollie's recovering from surgery (spayed last Thursday). Major surgery apparently, after which the vet advices strict rest, but Mollie doesn't seem to understand that, so it's all a bit stressful trying to get her to calm down, especially as wer're not allowed to take her for a walk for 14 whole days! Alice is on her way to Southhampton tonight for an interview at the uni(staying in a B & B because for some unhelpful reason they've asked her to arrive at 8.30am tomorrow morning). Anyway I really hope she does OK because she hasn't heard from any of her other choices - apparently applications are up 40% this year! Hope you survive the fundraising jaunt - I'm donating some money you'll be pleased to hear. Remind me when you're home - will you be here for Easter? Thinking of you, Lots of love, Mum, xxx

ay up slaphead. hows it going? ive been checkin the website everday and checkin out the slideshows. the elephants look wicked! been showing everyone the photos of you and they are all well jealous. ma told me that you rang the other day and that you are havin an awesome time which is just what we wanted to hear! did you manage to get a better nickname than 'cow' before you moved on to another group? not that it wasnt catchy, just think you could have gone one better. so travelling ay?? thats going to be the perfect ending to your india adventure. gives you a few more weeks to gather a nice selection of floaty pants (thai pants) for your favourite brother. bring john back something simple and shiney and your sorted for him.

unfortunately uni has hit that point when its going to be all work from here on in. grrrrrreat. but im still enjoying the projects so its all good. apart from that, lancaster life is simple and quiet.

But im missing you lots and lots sis. and cant wait for you to get back. im glad your having such an amazing time saving the world one cow shed at a time (but seriously im very proud of you sis).

speak to you soon sis. love you xxxxxxxx

Hey bec, sorry i didnt write you for a while, mum says you've done your trek now and climbed a massive mountain, fairplay!! Bet you've got leg muscles of steel now! So i guess you must be on to the final part now, it seems to have gone really quick. Will you be doing some travelling round india afterwards? We're still having a great time, nearly finished vietnam and heading into cambodia next week, vietnam has been fab, i would highly recommend it for your next trip, better than thailand i think as less commercial. Anyway we'll both be back in blighty next month so can catch up on everything properly then. Keep up the good work and enjoy every day, love you loads, Ruthie xxx

Hi darling. I was just getting bored at home applying for jobs so I felt like writing you another blog :) This might be the last time I contact you before the expedition is over coz after that you would have internet (hopefully).

I hope you got through the trek okay. Enjoy the final phase and make sure you have plenty of tissues handy when the final goodbyes come at the end of the expedition :'(

    Take care

P.S. Don't forget to bring back my CamCaddy (with its adaptor pin) and see Eeva for my Raleigh log book and USB with photos on it.

Hey! Sorry for being a bit of a grump. So glad I got some contact with you. We have just had loads and loads of snow! It's a bit wet at the bottom but at the top it's amazing. First big bit we've had since you were here, it's wierd! I'm used to skiing on ice not snow! The other day my binding came off cos it went through some really thick stuff, luckily I'd been practicing one legged skiing earlier on in the day! Work is going well, I am much happier but miss you crazy amounts. I'm guessing your out on your next and final phase now? I hope it goes well, make the most of your last few weeks! I'll probably be back at some point in mid-April before another Lego summer! Magic Pass fun times with a lot of time to use it! I can't wait to see you again, like I said I've got something I'm thinking of to do, I guess we'll have to see how it goes but think it would be awesome! Looking forward to getting your letter. I miss you so much and think about you all the time.

    Hey Loo,
Just another quick one.....your letter arrived! It was on the mat as we stepped thru the door last night on our return from Manchester.....Manchester was fab, Genetics Conference was so exciting and parents got treated like royalty...not sure why but all the brainiacs hold them in high esteem. It's like being a celeb, everyone wants to chat with you! NIH Fred was there, that was a good chinese, 8 years ago now, remember? And I had lunch with a top Prof Swede. Exciting times for myositis peeps and me personally just got to get this rotten Thesis in asap and then I can move onto pastures new!
We read you request in your letter and we will undertake the mission instructed!Fingers crossed with the post.
I'm hopefully off for a curry tonight so will raise a glass to you!

  57. Dear Ameze Simbo,
Hello! How's it going? Hope everything is well and you're having fun. I like the sound of the food the locals are making you. Get recipes so you can cook something for me when you get back. I met Kwesi and Kim (she's in London for a lil while)for coffee the other day and both are ok. We were talking about the London Olympics. I so badly want tickets for the athletics final (and gymnastics). You have to enter your card details when you sign up, which sucks cos if you sign up for everything and by some random chance you manage to get all of them it'll cost a fortune. Someone at work said her husband signed up for all the Volleyball comps and if he gets all the tickets it'll cost around £4000. Madness. England sucks. It's rained all day. Oh but Gentlemans Dub Club play in May...at Tutus! Wanna go? Tickets are like a tenner. If you do let me know and I'll get them ASAP (so there isn't a repeat of last time). Any way I better get back to work. Ciao bella!

    Hi Darling
Umptiumpth attempt at getting a message on the blog - lost count how many appear not to have got through, which is a bit frustrating. Catherine seems to have succeeded! Happy Happy Birthday for Tuesday, have a terrific day - it will be a 19th to remember, wherever you are. We are thinking of you and have some more cards here - Kay and Mish (+50!). More questions from Sophie who is desperate to know about training Mumbai/Delhi as you said you'd heard it was good, so presuming that means you don't want to fly? Also, shd she bk accommodation in Bangalore, or will you be moving on the same day she arrives? *********Please facebk/email me/her with answers*********Also A's grandmother re Naivasha -orphanage or school? ******** as they both need answers urgently. Contacts awaiting delivery. Billy has flown to Tland today. Email from Martin L congratulating you on your results - certification under control. More pix please - have only seen one on C1. Edinburgh still silent. August lease signed and sorted - (Bro)oke will be in London in June (handy for your party?!).Mat has big exams on your bday, been revising all week poor chap. How many mountains under your belt so far? Hope the climbing genes are winning, and you're keeping track of the peaks you've conquered. Do you remember that Yosemite T shirt: Go Climb a Rock! 59. To Andy Jehring: Charlie 2

Glad to hear the fantastic Jehring-family pseudo-beard is serving you well. Nothing says 'manly' like three hairs liberally distributed around the chin area. On the plus side, the Gillette corporation gets to see less of our 'hard earned' money.

I hope by now your condition has moved on from V to D & V. If not, it may well be a symptom of your habit of talking complete and utter- Well. You know.

I'm not entirely sure what the poor transcribers do about censorship, but I'm sure the parents reading all about their little angels' horizon-widening experiences don't want the level of intercourse dragged down to the gutter. So I guess I shouldn't swear. But I did just sneakily get the word 'intercourse' in. I might just turn the rest of these messages into an attempt to insert increasingly overt double entendres into otherwise clean passages.

Did it again. I'm on fire here.

I'm currently at home waiting to go off to the inter-university climbing competition in Sheffield. I'm being picked up from Bartlam by the climbers, so I tried to figure out the best way of hiding Dyson from them, embarrassment as he is. Apparently you need to cut air holes for dogs. In my defence, no one has ever pointed this out to me, so the flaws of the now-patented 'canine jar' are, I believe, more of a result of poor education, rather than 'outright cruelty like none before it', as the judge decided to phrase it. Some people are just too thin-skinned.

I don't think Dickie realised it was dad's birthday. He came in, drank a cup of tea and ranted about how he had too little work, then too much work, then said something about Libya and immigration, then left. I think in future he should be left off the party invite list. We only have so many antidepressants kicking around.

You'll never guess how much digging there is to do at home though. I hope you haven't done too much in India because, boy, is there a lot of shovel work here. If you have, though, I guess that counts as practice. Either way, you might want to delay your return as much as possible.

Well, apparently I have a dissertation to do, otherwise I 'fail' my 'degree' or some such nonsense. I'm going trad climbing for the first time in a few months on sunday, so you might want to find whatever the Indian equivalent of champagne is, just in case the worst happens. I've bequeathed you my old socks in the case of my death. I know how fond you are of them.

    Your loving brother.

    Hi there,
Hope everything is going well and you're having the time of your life!!
Your mum and I have been corresponding regarding trains/accomodation/other important things. You will be glad to know that I have booked my flights now. I believe my flight gets into Bangalore at about 4.30AM, but I will get back to you with definite details later and will obviously give all the info to your mum as well. I've been investigating all the trains (Bangalore to Goa, Goa to Mumbai, Mumbai to Delhi) and I think they all require pre-booking. If it's ok with you I think I should book them, otherwise we will be left in a bit of a pickle! Also I think I will book the hotel in Bangalore, I havn't yet so if you do have a problem with that let me know!!
I think that's pretty much it for now, your mum has been really good at getting info to me and we are going to rendez vous next week to swap documents etc.
