Echo and the diggy men

Hello all, hope you've been well. Things here with us in India are all good, as the temperatures rise people are now in getting fully into the swing of Raleigh life on expedition.

First let's start with the most important of the recent news, remember that I introduced Betty the calf and Simon the stork in a recent post? Well after further inspection, it turns out that Simon the stork isn't a stork at all. He's an egret so we've renamed him Eddie the egret Edwards. Took a while for some people here to get it, some people still haven't... So while you ponder on that, here's an update on what the two Echo teams have been up to since arriving at their camps for their phase two adventure...

Hello zero, hello zero. Echo 3 here with an update from the trenches

Hey people!
This is a little update from the girls of Echo 3 expedition 11A whilst the lads are in their bamboo gym.

We’ve been very busy here at the reservoir site in Huskurhaddi. First, the essentials...we’ve been digging trenches, making our camp look extra pretty, building bashas and the all essential long-drop. But more importantly we've been quite busy trying to fend off all variety of wayward animals that persistently eat our food and move our stuff!  After a hard morning’s work in the trenches, we’ve all been happy to come back to camp and act like dragons, fruit and Cilla Black before running time trials through the trenches.

Our team has discovered a new talent, besides fending off goats... cookery! We all agree that Gordon Ramsey would hold immense respect for our camp style spaghetti bolognese complete with tasty soya balls, Sophie’s special fried banana’s (yum!) and Rich’s special fried rice. Jess and Louis have also learnt that washing tomatoes is important before serving them to the whole group, unless we want runs to the long drop to become inevitable.

The most surprising thing so far has been the intense sunshine in the daytime followed by the routine 6pm hurricane followed by monsoon style torrential rain that floods our bashas at night. Lottie and Sophie have already had one night’s sleep under the stars due to puddle collections in their bashas. How many more nights will we spend star watching?!

On a serious note, we think the whole of Echo 3 would agree that living in this beautiful environment, getting to know each other and building our own community is also a lot of fun and great satisfaction every day. Our group has already developed a natural and close bond and we are enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

Obviously everyone would be enjoying being part of Echo 3 as we have celebrity guest Matt Damon in our presence! Guy has learnt how to handle our banter well now thankfully.

This is Echo 3 signing out, much love. Over and out.

A week in the life of the new Echo 4
Written by Binika.

Just over a week ago, we arrived to a deserted, dry, insect infected (namingly mice, tarantulas, giant human eating ants and food fetish flies) field, a place we would soon call home!

We got to work straight away building our own Indian palace – our communal area, luxury bamboo fitted shower, 4ft long drop toilet and eventually our four poster bashas. Pure bliss.

Our first night we spent around the camp fire gazing at stars... constellations such as scotty dog and onions belt have been presented to us throughout our stay. Then we were rudely interrupted by by bright lights into the mist...no not a UFI, yes 2 massive American trucks that drove directly through our camp to dig boreholes for a well which continued through the night.

Our amazing trench is getting bigger and will definitely fit its purpose, we feel a sense of achievement every time we finish work every day. Once we finish work we arrive back at the camp to our two people who’ve had to stay on camp duty to see what new inventions they’ve created or built for the camp; shelving, benches fit for ikea, a self functioning gym open 24 hours a day, Rachael’s hairdressers is also functioning for the afternoon’s if you fancy a quick cut and blowdry before venturing down to the reservoir to show off your new camp look. We are currently in the process of building a swing and the Jacuzzi has been pencilled in for construction next Tuesday, so it’s all go in the life of an Echo 4 recruit.

The only downside could perhaps be the long-drop – despite being padded out with luxury, the gentlemen’s etiquette just has not been followed. So being greeted in the morning with a stench so bad you can’t breathe is normal; to have a million flies rise up from the hole when the shorts have just been droppd is normal; and don’t worry in the slightest if the tarpaulin around you just blows down and away from around you, this is the norm. Someone at some point will soon fix it back into place.

Ben’s birthday has been the focal point this week – the ripe old age of 19. We all got up early and decorated his bash a with balloons and banners and sang happy birthday whilst he woke up! We also had a feast of chicken and vegetables for dinner and made a cake in a pressure cooker. It all went down a treat!

Echo 4 have many more plans ahead , we have been teaching at the local school in Basava Pura, including a sports day on Saturday and there are many more projects in camp to create and plenty more trenches to dig so we will keep you informed... Echo 4 over.

Dear brother, have completed the trek with no blisters thanks to your socks, the views were brilliant. I’ve played guess the thee tune, ‘Jurassic Park’ being the one of choice. I am now digging trenches on an environmental phase which stops elephants getting into the village. The team have made a gym out of bamboo and it’s good crack. Also running around a huge lake, we must both do to India for a holiday in the future you would love it!

Thanks for the blog message nice little surprise! No this group didn’t have much of an awkward start which is good and I am enjoying Echo 4. It is a lot different to Charlie! How is home? Please don’t tag me in photos just yet just that I would like to show my family and friends in person first, hope that’s ok. Hope you’re not missing us and Raleigh too much x

From Clare Evans
Hey Mum ,not sure if you’ve read my last blog message but I thought update you on animal sightings. We saw 2 snakes fornicating at the end of my last phase (not sure what type they were both about 2m long ) and on the first morning of my new phase we saw a lone elephant making its way back from the reservoir - it was amazing! We’re digging elephant trenches which is really hard work but rewarding. Send my love to everyone at home (especially the animals)

To all
As we now approach the halfway point on Raleigh I am feeling adjusted to Indian life. Now on my 2nd phase I am digging elephant proof trenches and constructing solar fencing. Spotted an elephant on my first morning but not a lot since (hopefully spot more). Early morning starts with hard physical work as is the case currently, but it is nice relaxing in the afternoon. Still the trek to do which will be a challenge but also exciting. Really looking forward to getting home and seeing everyone. Just 5 weeks to go now. Hope all is well at home.

Just started my new phase today so was digging a trench.  And this morning I saw an elephant it was so cool and it was quite far away but it was still cool.  My camera has broken though so could not take a photo. Need to ask other people to take photos for me because I wanna make a scrap book , actually could you maybe send me some disposable cameras please if possible that would be amazing. Might need to send them individually because not allowed parcels that are too big. Love you so much and cannot wait to talk to you on the phone again.

I am getting bigger every day and mummy has had to put away lots of my clothes because I don't fit in them any more. Yesterday I rolled over for the first time and my first tooth has popped up! All the better to eat my food with!! I had a busy weekend - we went to Dunoon to see Grandpa George and Grandma Gilly and I stayed overnight. I was a very good boy and slept all night long. We had the Bingo Night on Tues and am sure Alph could have done with some moral support, you know how stressful waiting for numbers gets.

Maki did the abseil - but of course instead of being scared of the 100ft below she just goes 'awesome', she has no fears.

Planning a trip to Bristol end of March to see Nakita and the Baby bump. She hasn't taken on any of our suggestions for names yet but we'll keep trying!

Well done and keep making us proud!

Hope with Mum's help we have managed the technology. Our memories of D & V in India are of a need for very prompt action. If not disaster is in front and behind. Tigers lost to Sarries at Welford Road by one point on Saturday. Manu Tulagi scored the only try brilliantly. Billy 12trees muffed a last gasp penalty which would have saved it. We did not attend, another 80th b'day!Int'ls are still going on so second string 1/2 backs.

FLOOOO!
Moeilijk veel zin in. Bijna alles is nu geregeld.

    Hi bro!

Well, would you believe, it is snowing here....again! We're into March, its meant to be the spring now! I am so jealous of you in the lovely heat of India. There you are getting nice and tanned while we are still putting on all the winter woolies. I hope you are surviving the trek. The photos of the first group that did it look like it is really hard work. Worth it but really tough. You'll have found muscles you didn't know you had. We're having a pretty quiet week. Just the usual - singing nursery rhymes on monday, went into the neighbours for coffee on tuesday, coffee with the other mummies on wednesday, buggy fit on thursday and mother and toddlers on friday. Aaah, the life of a new mum! I shall sign off now but I promise to message again soon with more exciting news (ha ha) from the Boyd house!

    Lots of love, Jen xx

  34. Hi Holly,

How are things going? Are you taking some great pictures to show us when you get back? Not much happening here. Weather was sun for 4 days, now back to rain and cloud. Booked for us to go to Amsterdam for those 4 days in June. Teaching practice going well, so much preparation though. Eds had a good time in Barcelona (might have told you that already).

    Lieve Wieger,

Dag lieve schat, miss you! Hows you? Alls good this end and I hope youre still having fun. Saw on the blog that you had some rain....I would like to say thats a shame but I'd be lying!! I went out with Vicki and crew on Friday night and everyone asked after you,but I havent done much other than that. I cant seem to make a dent in the workload from Uni at the moment but I'm trying hard to get most of it done before you come home. The girls are fine and Loz has been offered Twynham but has decided to stay at BSG (if they'll have her). Hope the boys are OK - hows Tom's travels going?
We've got 2 students from Austria staying for the week and they've been great and my 2 weeks at B'mth hospital has been challenging to say the least!!
Back to uni next week and then on placement at the end of March. I've been allocated Basingstoke so looks like an early start there!!

Just spent a nice day toasting in the Antigua sunshine. Very nice resort, going to managers cocktail party tonight then we'll go to St John's town tomorrow - that's the main "city!" - to suss out the metropolis. They are all very laid back around here - Caribbean pace!
How's the treck going? It will be infinitely more strenuous than anything we are doing, Hope you're coping with the rains which we hear you are experiencing and hope that the rewards, views etc are as anticipated. Take plenty of photos we all want to share the experience when you get back.
    What an achievement.

    Lieveeee Fie!!!!!

    Hi love
Hope you are settling into your new rotation. Bumped into the chair of the heritage grants committee at the gym he is interested to hear how you are getting on and looks forward to receiving your feedback. The news hasn't changed very much. Most of the headlines are fixed on the possible meltdown of the Japanese nuclear power station to the point that you would almost think they were wishing it to get worse. The poor people are now having to cope with snow as well as the effects quake. Japan is said to have moved 5yards to the East from space. At Home the young are having more difficulties getting jobs and the unemployment figures are rising. Britons are being told to leave Bahrain After 3 protesters are killed by the police and the Red Cross have left Benghazi in Libya as the rebels loose ground to Gaddafi forces.
Thinking of you love. I will send another update tomorrow

Anyway, how are you and where are you? All those stories about long-drops, sit-reps and cas-evacs becoming reality now I hope, seeing all these photos brings memories back. I dont know when your heading back to fieldbase but pass on my wishes to Mark and the team, I'm very jealous of you all, what I would do to sack in the history essays and literary reviews and go build treehouses and live in basha's again! On that subject, I hope you've made some modifications to your basha if you havent already, you need at least a soundsystem! make sure you keep stocking up on mars bars and sour cream and chive crisps- plough through those shop cards! Keep working hard bro and stay in touch, I'll speak to Luce and we'll try and get a letter out at some point, try and write to the Don as he'd love to hear from you and his letters are always savagely brilliant. Anyway, I hope you're hoarding all the masala rice bags as they are by far the best, dont let anyone tell you otherwise and learn to love the sandwich spread- it's actually really good. From her uncle Tijo Collot d'Escury from THE Netherlands

    Lieve Anne Romee,
