Feeling hot hot hot...

So here we are, already few days into the third and final phase. Raleigh life seems to have a clock all of its own and I’m pretty sure it goes a lot quicker than all other time pieces.  The temperatures are still rising and we’re up to about 37degrees now which means the sweat levels for everyone have reached new heights along with the need to seek shade at any opportunity.

Anyway, enough about our sweat problems, I’ll quickly move onto the news you really want to hear which is how much everyone else is sweating... No? Ok then, well instead why don’t I update you on how Charlie 1 and Tango 6 are getting on as Naomi, our field base medic for this phase, headed out on the first loop to catch up with them.

First stop was the tropical Vellary to see Charlie 1 who are building the bio-gas units and a tribal village house. Once they’d finished the day’s work digging the mammoth hole to house the biogas dome, they headed off to a local tribal festival where there was all sorts of fun and games taking place.

It was tricky to get everyone in the same spot this time so it we weren't able to get a group photo I’m afraid but we’ll be back out to see them soon when we’ll get more photos, promise. They’re all well though and loving living with the community and getting to know the family that they’re building the unit for. They’re being spoilt with food as the family cooks for them all every day and they’re enjoying the feeling of being in a popular shampoo advert by washing in the local river every day.

The group at the festival.

James and Laura spot something else happening over to the right - unfortunately we never found out what this was...

Sheena, Anne-Romee, Louisa, Thatte, Kate, Holly and Jess look on.

Festival dancing.

Genevieve with her new friend.

Once the tribal party was over, it was time to jump in the car and head down into Kerala to meet the Tango 6 gang at their camp for dinner. The camp was at the bottom of the Amba peak which they would be scaling the next day so they’d had plenty of time to check out the heights they were about to conquer. Lottie and Lucy cooked the group diner of soya balls and rice which I’m sure tasted better than it sounds! The next morning Georgia Z was on porridge duty which also involves the tricky task of waking up the whole team but she did it in the best possible way, by singing a song. We've spoke to them the next night and the whole team made it to the top of the peak which is fantastic.

Lottie, Eeva and Lucy cook up a trangia treat.

Philip keeps the fire going to keep elephants at bay, although I reckon that lunghi would have done the trick...

Catherine getting ready to set off

The group getting ready to leave camp at the bottom of the Amba peak which they were climbing that day.

Tango 6 about to walk up Amba. Back Row L-R - Andy, Georgia, Catherine, Georgia, Lottie, Lucy, Rachel, Danielle, Becca (PM), Ben, Eleri (PM, )Karen, Eeva (PM)
Front row L-R - Philip, Alex, James, Johnson (guide), Nikil (guide), Louis.

The group setting off up to the top of Amba - well done guys.

The latest field base gossip is that Betty the calf and Eddie the egret Edwards seem to have had a bit of a spat as Eddie has been seen hanging out with Gareth the goat. I think Betty is taking it pretty hard as when I woke up yesterday morning the first thing I saw was her trying to get in to our dorm. She must have been after a shoulder to cry on, poor thing. However I was too busy chasing Harry the toad out of the shower to have time to chat.

We’re off to see two more of the teams today, so we’ll be stopping in at BD Munti to see how the toilet building is going at Charlie 2 and then dropping into the trenches to hang out with Echo 4 so we’ll being you news of them very soon. If we manage to climb out of the trench that is...

And a huge thanks again to everyone that has sponsored us for the 10k run, which is getting more and more daunting as the temperatures rise and the start time gets earlier and earlier. We’ve raised over a thousand pounds now which is incredible and everyone is so happy. So thanks, it’s really fantastic to know that you’re all supporting that work that we’re doing out here.

Hey Mum, I can’t remember what I said in the last blog message. Wart’s gone again? Crazy dog...! I got your letters, the galaxy was amazing, thank you! I sent another letter so hopefully it will be there soon. The trip to London for James sounds good, he can decide everything , it’ll be cool. I would love to go away again when i get back, it’s hard work here, not a holiday! Somewhere warm? Does James want to come or not? Not long til I’m back home now yey! Am craving normality a bit. That and fish and chips! Can’t wait for our chance to do some shopping, I’ve not got a lot of Indian stuff yet except a sari which is really pretty. I’m going to bring back loads though. The house will be filled with India by April!
See you soon

To Dad, Gamie, Grandpa, Rich
Finally had time to work out that the date is and realised I missed your birthday! Glad to see Dad is continuing to cause himself pain on the Spring challenge rather than celebrating his birthday. Gamie and Grandpa - Happy 80th! Sorry I couldn’t make it and you had to put up with the rest of the family, I hope you’ll forgive me. Rich I can’t believe you’re 21, you look awful for your age! I’ve received the 2nd parcel, the sweets went down instantly and were appreciated by all the sports paper is also very popular. My body is aching thanks to the Spaldings getting me that horrible book which has inflicted pain on a few unlucky members of the group. Very excited for a 3rd parcel now, I will be crushed if it is anything less than amazing.
Love from Andy

Hey broseph, brilliant to hear from you. I’m missing your ugly little face but it’s ok because there’s loads of really ugly toads here so I can just pretend they’re you. Yeah I’m working on the white tights issue., my arms are pretty brown, not normal brown but just brown for me. Let me know how the capturing goes ha ha I can just image you two running around in the dark with rope, bin bags and kitchen knives haha. But yeah, go easy on him, no loud noises. Wow a choreographed barber shop – you are just too cool, make sure you get a video. How come it’s in the DSU? You may be cook but you’re not that cool. I’ll get Rochie to bring his mates and abuse your little dance haha. Missing you loads, hope home is cool, lots of love ‘Stuart the cowagous one’ x x x x

From Sarah Churlish
To Bex
It’s so good to hear from you! Yeah the blog messages are really nice to get. Yeah the work is hard but really rewarding, like I actually knew the family we were building the biogas unit for. They cooked our meals every day, we lived on their doorstep and we played with the kids every day. I’m back at field base at the moment for changeover and I’m heading off to the environmental phase next so digging elephant trenches for 18 days. And YES!! I’d come to Vietnam and the rest of Asia – I’m broke but we’ll work it out ha ha! Your travels sound amazing, wish I could have done it with you. I reckon you’d love it here, except all the Raleigh rules ha ah. So when will you be back in the UK, mid April? Will I get to see you at all before you disappear again? Also as if you’ve named your itinerary!!! Oh Bex I miss you! Wishing you were here too. Trying to plan my trip after and I need your organisation! I’ll try and blog back soon, love you x x x x x
PS keep having an awesome time and have 5 beers for me ha ha!

From Sarah Churlish
To Mum and Dad
It’s goot to hear what you’ve been up to at home. I can’t even imagine snow at the moment – it’s baking hot here and getting hotter, not actually burnt yet but I’m developing the t-shirt tan nicely! Charlie 1 was really good. It was amazing to be so close to the people we were building the houses and biogas units for. It makes it so real and even more rewarding. Off to Echo 4 now so I’ll be digging elephant trenches and putting solar fencing up so hopefully I’ll spot an elephant. Yeah it’s a shame about the tigers but they’re notoriously hard to spot in the south so we didn’t expect much really. There was a sign inside the bus saying ‘Animal sightings are purely luck’ so there we go. The food was amazing in the community but now it’s back to trekking food so rice bags and noodles… yum! Looking forward to the fry-ups! Speak to you all soon x x x x

From Sarah Churlish
To Laura Botteley
Hey, not sure if you still check this but thanks for my card/letter/essay ha ha, it’s brilliant to hear from you!! I’ll write one back so you’ll get it eventually. Good luck with the job hunt, don’t lose faith. Missing you, lots of love, Sarah x x x

Appreciating even more just how good parents you guys are, I’ll say happy mother’s day now to the best mum in the world, sorry to not get you a card or pressie but haven’t been able to, I will make sure I make it up to you when I get back. Dad, don’t worry about that picture of me looking sad, it was because I felt rubbish at that moment, I’ve been having a great time and will send another letter soon. Mum, could you do me a massive favour, it’s Andy’s birthday soon, could you please ring his mum or Kieran’s mum to pass on a happy birthday messageand that I miss him lots. Thanks and talk soon, Elliott.

From Binika Liu

Hey Mum! Received your message in the last phase, wish Grandad a very happy birthday from me! I can’t wait to see Molly again. Hey, that’s ok, I love getting any type of mail, post or blog messages, it’s such a good feeling! I got a lovely package from my sister with chocolate, crisps, mints and haribo – like a dream come true! I miss the simple things so much… running water, a fridge, being clean! I’m rocking a great dirt tan that rubs off every night!! Ha ha so I actually need a holiday after this! Plus I’ve been quite ill over the last week, I recovered and then came down with it again, not fun! I did get your letter and energy tables, thank you soo much! I have sent you another letter so hopefully you’ll get it soon. It’s weird knowing I’ve been away from home for so long and I do miss everyone a lot, but I’m home soon so we’ll have to arrange to so something – I think I said in my letter a night in with a takeaway, wine and photos! I hope everything is ok at home. I’m trekking for my final phase so I’ll be in need of a chill out and pamper once I’m hope ha ha book is in at the spa! I miss you lots and can’t wait to see you!! Thanks for your messages my loves! Hope you are both well. Tomorrow I leave for my last phase so not too long until I see your faces! Lucy – Bristol sounds fab but that was mean to describe the café’s food when the only option I see here is curry! Oh and the milkshake part was in your words ‘ the cherry on the icing on the cake’!! I’m glad you were thinking of me though. Rachel, you are such a doughnut (nom!) I would have suggested asking Lucy for my address but it’s too late to send post to me now. Write me a massive email of pure golden gossip instead! Attach some photos banter too… hilair! I’ll see you in a few weeks hopefully. MISS YOU BOTH, KEEP WRITING! Xxx PS lost 3 kilos yes! Hahaha.

I received your letter yesterday and it made my day! Not to worry, I have recovered from being ill and feel like my energy has been renewed after trekking!! Yes, LOVED dressing in the sari on Echo, surreal experience! They kept trying to put bracelets on us too but most of our wrists are too big! They’re so petite here. I leave for my community phase tomorrow so will write back to you then and fill you in on my experience of trek (nothing like I expected!) and community. I’m in the middle of reading Robby’s  ‘The Killer inside me’ at the moment. Hope Ales gives you a great mother’s day, talk soon x x x

Thanks for your regular blogs and the package! I sent you a card and a very long letter today, I was in a massive rush so please excuse the mess! I tried to cram in as much as possible. I will write again when I settle in on my next phase. I couldn’t send my mother’s day present to you from field base so ignore what I said in the card/letter. I can hopefully send it on my next phase. I’m happy you miss my cooking... I miss my cooking too! I’m excited for my next phase, have great PMs and looking forward to meeting the tribal families and eating their food. I recommend you read the book ‘White tiger@ if you want to know what life is like here, it’s a very popular read. Wish Nan a happy birthday from me and that I’ll be thinking of her. 2. For Ben in Tango 6,

Good to see your smiling face - and the mountain you had to climb that day! Thanks for your facebook message - still waiting for your letter. Spring has finally come here, all is looking beautiful and the temperature is climbing but still glacial compared to you guys. Getting ready for C's birthday this weekend - can't think what to buy her - she's currently in Dublin playing netball for her college! Dad and I working hard on Burton, another site visit today, should be all finished by end of June. Good luck with the rest of the trek - hope you get to float down a river. love Mum, Dad and Miranda xxxx

  3. Laura Oakley:-

Hey you! Hope the start of your last phase has gone well. Not long to go now so make the most of it! I'm quite looking forward to coming home now as the sun is too hot here that the snow is just slush, not the best to ski on. Can't imagine Aldershot is more exciting though but will get to the last 3 home games :) we've won the last 4 in a row, maybe a late playoff push for the reds? Can't believe you're home in 2 weeks, it has gone so quickly. I got your message and I have replied. Looking forward to seeing you again more than you could ever know.

    Hoi Wieger,

Floooo how's life?

    Liefs,
    Matthijs

Maar ik mis India nog veel meer hoor ik wil echt terug! Ik ben benieuwd naar alle verhalen en als je in NL bent spreken we heeeel snel af. Veel plezier daar nog. liefs Daph

We all can't wait to hear all your stories and see your pictures. Kathryn's address is

I will cut and paste Kathryn's blog and you will see she has finished teaching and is currently on a beach in Zanzibar! She will return in a weeks time and then after a few days goes on safari. I would expect any post you send to take 2-3 weeks which may be too long as she will have left by then??

Enjoy your final phase!! Are you doing the 10K run? I have sponsored you!!

  10. Hi Louisa Charlie 1
Your long awaited letter arrived today (!!!) just as I was leaving to go to Nan's and I read it while I was with Nan and took her your postcard. Thank you it was lovely. Nan was very pleased with the card, particularly the bit when you said she was in your prayers. She's a bit low after her fall so I think it lifted her. Just seen the blog and your photo at the tribal festival. Thanks for your message on the blog. I replied to your email but I don't know when you will next get a chance to go on the internet. It was lovely to hear your voice on Monday morning. Mothers day is 3rd April so your card may reach me in time - I look forward to it. But this Sunday coming we are putting the clocks forward. Weather lovely today. Sounds like you have got very used to bugs being around you so I wont be expecting you to scream at moths any more when you get back. No wonder you got ill if you were eating flies in your dinner at camp. We are studying snails in class next week. Had the last singing class yesterday eve and Anthony says my voice has improved but I forgot to ask Ben to tape me that programme on India while I was out! Lots of love Mum and Ben xxx

Hey, hope your well. Your letter arrived no postcards yet though. It was good to read your tales although the last page took a bit longer to read on that dirty paper! lol. Not much to update you on from home. I'm busy with Uni work. Got my residential in Wigan this weekend. Just be careful with your mobile usage. Your March bill was quite high, double usual amount. Not long now until you are home!

Hi Voz. I had my last ever assessed practical today, and I got all the dates of my exams, I only have 6 thankfully. but I'm not stressed yet, just really excited for the holidays. the weather here is amazing at the moment. its literally feeling like summer already, but I bet its freezing in comparison to India. my driving test is in eleven days now! I still get scared by roundabouts though so I'm thinking it might not go so well. I hope your trek is more fun than it is hard and that you haven't got too many blisters. I'm glad you're having a good time and that you managed to eat cake on your birthday. would love to hear from you soon. love from emily xxxx :)

I read your letter to Ben, he listened and chuckled to bits of it. He listened attentively for him considering how long it is. He asks occasionally what time it is in India - (you know how obsessed he is with time) He requests can you write a letter just for him? We liked the bit about being under the same moon and stars as you. You mentioned Bon Iver Re Stacks in your letter - I'd never heard of him so I am listening to that on youtube now. Quite relaxing. Thanks for the message. Can’t believe you are in your final phase now although it does seem like ages since we last saw you. This blog is great for contact and information. I am going to miss it when you are travelling in the last three weeks. In fact I think I’m going to miss it when you get back home as we won’t get the same level of detail of what you’re up to all the time! (Only joking!)
Robby is glad you like the book. He is always recommending books for me to read but I rarely do as our literary tastes are usually poles apart!
Funny what you said about the bracelets as I can remember trying some on when I was in India and couldn’t get them over my wrist. I always felt rather big boned and ungainly compared to the daintiness of the Indian ladies!
I saw Nan yesterday and read your post card. Eating ants yuk! Is this the same girl who was disgusted by caviar?
Talking of food I made a curry last night and thought of you. Don’t worry you’ll soon want to eat them again once you’ve been home a week or two!
    Keep well and safe

Hey Loo, I spent yesterday at a Barts reunion! Managed to get together with Kaf, Mads and Amina.....first time in 12years all in one room! Surrounded by sprogs and I felt a relief that I've not embarked on motherhood! Went to a house warming in Totton at the weekend and we all went as chavs to blend in with the locals.

Looks like this phase is loads of fun and not as hard as digging! Watched TV of Mysore and showed us the snake-man, think he is the guy in the Blog Pictures.....recorded it for you.....I have so much random stuff recorded for you we will need to pray for rainy days to justify a duvet day and square eyes.....
All is good here, I'm determined to evolve Alfie into a genius...and I had homemade coleslaw for lunch, unfort the onion was well strong and I now stink! I'll be eating tic tacs all day before conversational Spanish class tonight! Hugged an elephant, goat or random rock yet?

Just been watching a program about Kerala and Mysore - the city of Palaces - it looks amazing and featured Sham the Man - the snake man - just wondered if this was the guy who spoke to you before you started the treks. Also took you through the tea plantations, telling you about how it is grown and produced - looked fascinating. We were at Cuth's Society tonight and Stu from NorthView took us in Belly's Vivaro but the door came off after he dropped us off and he had to do 2 journeys on the way back to get 6 of us home - nothing changes!!! Anyway hope the elephant trenches are going well and that the heat isn't too bad.

I think we spotted one boot and some hands tying your bootlaces (are they still in one piece - the bootlaces - and the hands, come to think of it?) in the group photo at the start of your trek up Amba - it seems you were kneeling down at just the moment not to get the rest of you in the photo - but at least we know one of your feet was there! The heat sounds a challenge - how's the fake bake designer dan [=dirt tan] doing? I guess the sweat so often referred to in the blog must be washing off some of it - or giving you a lovely golden Kentucky Fried Coating. I posted you a letter today, just hoping it reaches you before you leave field base - how much turnaround time do you get before 6th? If phoning before you leave base nb nb ***please call my mob not landline*** - all explained in my letter. I'll email/text you too, in case the letter doesn't reach you. Hope to talk to you even if v. brief. Good luck with the run, it sounds pretty testing, but perhaps after the last few weeks it will seem like a walk in the park. You had 44 birthday FB messages apparently,so you have those to look forward to. I hope you had a good birthday and celebrated in style. Had a long chat with Rory at our rehearsal tonight - concert on Sunday, and the Maestro was getting just a little bit stressy - one member of chapel choir was sent out for drawing not singing! Said hi to Christian who is also singing. Rory saw Emily in Edinburgh on her birthday (up there for model UN). Let me know if you want me to get active and get back to Ed about your A grade to try and change their minds - hope you got the message through Comms. I need confirmation from you of all your decisions - would like to finalise it all. Tons of love and loads of hugs, Maman

I wish I knew if you were getting my increasingly deranged messages from here in boring old Europe. If you are, you'll be well aware that I am steadily losing my little mind. If you aren't, then I guess you should have a nice little pile of messages from the mind of a lunatic waiting for you when you get back from building units (?)

RIGHT. I hope your birthday was beyond excellent and that you celebrated that most important of all birthdays, the nineteenth (any birthday I'm also celebrating is the most important one of course) in style. I would say you're all grown up but that would be patronising and, let's be honest, untrue. I'm certainly just as immature as I was at Marlborough (woohoo.)

You might be entertained to hear that I am spending all my time here watching Prison Break, since I got my parents addicted to it. Is there anyone as gorgeous as Schofield/Mahone/Sucre in India with you? I should have a quick stalk of your team photos... I'm not including Lincoln in the gorgeous category any more because I've noticed that he's painfully bad at acting. Unfortunate.

I met up with some Oxford friends out here, and they tried TWICE to get into Bergheim, which is the nastiest club in Berlin (they reject the majority of the people who try to get in, a sort of way to assert how desperately cool the club is.) Anyway, it was very hilarious that they all got rejected twice. They were convinced that I would get in because I looked 'the most German' but I didn't think my ego would enjoy the battering so I didn't put myself up for some club-judgement. I know, I'm a coward!

Anyway the only other major event I can think of (really not that maijor) was at the colours assembly the other day... Firstly, brand new, never seen before EQUESTRIAN CLUB colours were handed out to three lucky people!! They made SUCH a big deal out of it, so comedy! The other 'major' event was when Mrs Wilson was rambling on about something when a group of S2s (including moi) started screaming cause this absolute GIGANTIC spider came out of no where. Mrs Wilson was so flaburgasted she was speachless! But no worries, Mrs Chalmers came to the rescue as usual and waded through screaming children until she found the deadly best and sqaushed it! t'was possibly the funniest assembly ever. Well, apart from those two 'major' events nothing (literally nothing) else has happened. Hope India is right good and your getting a right good tan! Oh I've just thought of something that happened... 90210 was INCROYABLE!! Seriously mate if you didn't watch them all online before you left... you have not LIVED!!! (Liam :D) right well, after that little outburst of excitiment I'm suddenly remebering all the homework slowly piling up so methinks I better get a crack on. Wouldn't want another detention (I got a Friday for having my phone on from Mrs Denier- urghhh...)

Lots and Lots of love and hugs from all in the burgh!!!!

Hey Lis darling, I am just back from Ankara. Spent 5 days with Dede, he is well, fully recovered from his aortic aneurysm repair procedure ! Nene unchanged; smiles, burps and calls people Esek. Asuman came form Izmir to see me also, it was well good. Umut/Gulen/Naz all well, they were impressed by your adventures and send their love. Ela got MARRIED YESTERDAY !! What a girl !? We only found out by accident because I phoned her. She was embarrased a bit and is planning a party after the baby is born. Erol came form Florida for the wedding, Ali didn't. You have received quite a few presents, a growing pile of letters & parcels awaits you on your desk. You are a genius for arranging extra travelling ! , we miss you a lot and would like to see you ASAP but still we think you've done well by extending the trip. At the next opportunity, phone us or tell us when you'll be able to read emails, we've got a selection of tips for your travels. Lots of love and hugs from all of us xxxx Pa xxxx

    Hello lovely Kate!
I hope it's all going well in Charlie 1, keeping up with it all on the blog and looking forwards to the next update from the loops.
Well it's been a busy time for me since I got home - I was offered a job through my Nursing agency as a residential Nurse for a man in Godalming, Surrey. So I have been living in his huge country manor house for the last month and 'nursing' him which involves changing his colostomy bag occasionally, walking his dog, driving him around in a golf buggy and visiting his lake, alapacas, horses etc!... So I haven't had a chance yet to call your mum but thankfully this job finishes on Weds 30th (my heart is SOOO not in this kind work, I feel more like a servant/maid). So anyway I plan to call her next week and arrange a few nights in Wandsworth town - looking forwards to it :-)
I hope you're having a great time in Charlie 1 and I'll message again once I've made my plans to move in. ;)
    Much love

    Dear Mona,
Aww your blog message made me cry! So thanks for that :-)
I hope you're having a great time in Echo 4 but I bet you miss BD Munti and I bet Javeed is missing you?! I am really missing India but I have my Raleigh assessment weekend on the 16th April and have applied to come back as PM/Medic in Feb 2012. I'm also off to Nepal for 3 months in May so I think I may have caught the travel bug just a bit?!
I'm keeping up with all the blogs and thinking of you all out there (with much jealousy!) Hope you're having a fantastic time.

Hello lovely girl! I am SO jealous of you on your trek with Tango 6 - I bet it is incredible?!
I have almost finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and I am loving every word. Very good reccomendation :) We must meet up when you get back and discuss it. I often think of our chats (and epic snacks!) and how important they were for me in keeping me happy/sane during my convalescence!I hope you really enjoy the rest of Raleigh - I have already applied to be a PM next year and I'm going on the assessment weekend soon. At the moment I have a very surreal job looking after a man in his huge country manor house in Surrey - will tell you all about it when you're back and ready for a London trip/film night with Louis.
Oh and I saw the blog about the 10k at the end of this phase and I fully expect you and Louis to be at the very front finishing together...thinking of me please!

    Hi Love
Hope you are well and enjoying yourself. I have a Quiz to write for the Explorers so may be a bit preoccupied over the next few days. Hope you are well and enjoying yourself it looks a little hot over there.
Here are a few comments about the news.
Libya rebels are now advancing due to international air support and the enforcement of a no fly zone. In Japan the confirmed death toll have exceeded 10,000 with over 17,000 still missing but the nuclear power stations are starting to be taken under control but radioactive water has been discovered off the coast. In London a march of over 250,000 people against cuts was highjacked by rent a mob who threw paint bombs and caused damage to property.
Hope you get the care packs eventually I haven't sent any more as they won't arrive in time. Thinking of you

Hello my lovely. Your wonderful mum just let me know that you're now in Tango 6 (is this a promotion, haha?) so I can message to the right place! Hopefully you'll still have got my last five or so rambling posts.

I feel like you Raleighans really ought to have military ranks to go with the wildly pretentious group names -- or maybe code names! I'm getting all carried away imagining that you're some kind of Jason Bourne agent with a title like: Private Georgia "Raging Bull" Brooke-Hitching of Tango 6, Division 4, Official Hole-Digger.

Note that I made you a Private, because that's what we were (I think) in our glorious CCF days. Yes, glorious. I enjoyed every second of tunneling through that-drain-in-the-river-under-that-bridge... Obstacle course day, what a joy.

I can't help but imagining that you are pretending to be on a secret mission in India and the Raleigh International idea is just a cover for your dangerous job. In fact, don't shatter my illusion, that's definitely what you're up to. Shoot, I've probably blown your cover now. When MI6 come knocking at my door I'll know that I've let out national secrets.

When you're back in touch let me know when you'll be back and settled in the UK, and then you can come and have a proper visit with me in Ox. I'll try to be more on top of things with my work so that we can do something! I'll hurl you with reckless abandon at one of my male friends and we'll see what happens, haha.

Love you more than Tango 6, Tilda xxxx

Soooooooooooo excited to get our second blog message from you (many thanks to Raleigh Comms).
I need EDINBURGH instructions [after their 'no'] as fast as you can get them to me please - I need to know soooooonest as other things hinge on your decision (like student finance application etc). Delivered stuff to Paul and Martin who wrote a nice email about you. Haven't done seismic contacts link - can you email instructions when you reach a cafe after 6th please? Will pass on flight views to Sophie - seeing her in two days' time. Had our concert this evening - tough going - saw a couple you and I know and asked them if they'd enjoyed it - and she said NO! Elephants sound scary - no wonder the fences and trenches are needed. Can't wait to hear more - please read emails carefully re contact 2-9 April - especially re when you return to field base (will have to be quick call on mobile only). Hope the snailmail reaches you: 2 parcels & letter are on their way - check them out when you get back to base.

It sounds as if it could have been a hard pedal on your birthday. Well done honeypie. Not sure we will recognise you by the time you come home in June, and I've calculated that you will be back just in time to enter the Tour de France!

  76. For Andy Jehring, Echo 4

    Dear Small Boy,
Your mother and I were perturbed to log onto you blog recently to find that you weren't in the group photo. Closer examination using all of the image manipulating tools in my armamentarium however revealed that you have either had a dramatic image change or been body substituted by a group of particularly inept aliens. Such is the nature of your new image that I had to dust off my old medical bag to find a sufficiently large dose of diazepam to restore your mother's power of speech.
It took me a while to realise who the image reminded me of until I cast my mind back to those bedtime stories I used to read you, little realising that all these years later you would re-enact the Allan Ahlberg character 'Burglar Bill' to such dramatic effect. The image will be completed no doubt after a couple of years in Liverpool, complete with scouse accent and a masterclass from T Spalding esq. I am seeing a good magistrate friend of mine today and will see if I can manage to get an honorary asbo for you. Every cloud has a silver lining however, I showed the picture to Paul and he says that Steve will almost certainly let you have an honorary lifetimes membership at Unique.
Life at Bartlam is fairly uneventful by comparison, even after the imaginary fire. We have 8 duck eggs incubating, Dicky is building a new bridge and telling everyone how wonderful life is (one of those statements is ironic).

    Your loving Father xx

    From Will Jehring

So my last message got moderated out, which is a travesty (do you not have free speech over there?). It is, however, probably better for the general public. I see you're now wearing a skirt and have no hair, which means you are both me in the first year of university and in five years' time. At least it solves your lice problem.

Our Indian life over here is dull. Arjun gets up at about 2 and spends the day on the Xbox, so I hope the population is a little more lively over there. I want a replacement Indian housemate either way, so ask around. Rent is pretty good, cleanliness less so.

I just consumed too much coffee while writing my dissertation to concentrate properly, so figured I'd drop you a line since the last envoy never made it. I hear you're off partying or some such thing, and staying on for two weeks (hate to say I told you so). I have 3 days before I set off hitchiking to the strange land of Romania, and can't help but feel slightly underprepared after seeing your ridiculous/incredible stuffsack arrangement. I assume by now you've installed some sort of intricate shelving system in your bag, complete with folding spice rack and pool table.

I see the patchy stubble is growing into a majestic patchy beard. Excellent work. It's not the same being in this country without you, Ratboy. Every time the rodent population of Exeter visits the bombsite that is our kitchen, I think of you and weep while bludgeoning them with a rolling pin. It helps with the stress.

If this gets moderated to death too I'm going to give up trying to communicate with you. Clearly our brotherly bond is too intense for this blog.

    Your loving brother

Am I right in thinking you will be back mid-April, in time for your birthday? I've just got back and will be here for a while so I will get to see you SO SOON if that's the case!!! Very excited to hear all of your stories. It still sounds amazing, and I reckon I would have loved it too... Curry every day, what could be better?! ;-) How are the elephant trenches coming along?

As for Vietnam and Asia etc, I've been having a dilemma! I am too poor to get out to Canada until at least May/June, and I'm worried about limiting my time there!! So everything is a bit open-ended at the moment. We really do need to do some travelling together though!!!

So after New Zealand I went to Fiji for 10 days and got an amazing tan! Fiji was lovely but I probably couldn't have spent more than 10 days there as it was sunbathe or nothing! Then I spent 5 days in LA and met a couple of friends from earlier in the trip - I went to Universal Studios and we drove down Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives, it was so weird! And I went to see the Beauty and the Beast musical which was amazing. It is nice to be home, but I know I will get bored quickly! The day I got back I went straight out in Leeds and met Jenna (she and Rob are all loved up so she's in Leeds a lot now), she misses you lots too! Can't wait to see you, enjoy the last phase :D lots of love xxxxxxxxx

We are having an awesome time in South India, we haven't been on the internet much at all... I am just trying to upload some photos at the moment. We are currently in Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, it is near the border of Kerela and tomorrow (1st April) we start a 2 day trek to Munnar in Kerela. From there will be spending a few days in Munnar until about the 5th and then heading to the coast in Kerela, we will spend a few days on the backwaters and end our holiday in Kochi. We fly out of Kochi on the 15th April. It will be amazing to see you if possible and we could arrange a time and a place easily when you have the net, but if you are planning on heading north then no worries my love. The north will be fantastic and the journey up there will be amazing also. Let me know what you decide, I hope you have some lovely people to carry on your travels with :) See you soon, either way.

How is everything out there? How is the hair working out for you? I hope it's been lovely and warm and no one has been making you walk around too much. I know how tiresome that can be. From the looks of it you will be built like a brick poohouse by the time you get home.

Nothing much going on here. I am bored. I have been baking a lot, getting quite good at it. Sal keeps me from going insane. I worry I'm never gonna have a job that means anything. Grief! BUT the sun is coming out quite a bit at the moment which makes everything seem good. MA is OK.
