Phase One Deployment

Friday at field base saw the five alpha groups start the arduous job of collecting their mountains of kit and food supplies from the logistics store.  With the assistance of their Project Managers the teams packed everything they needed to live and work for the next 18 days onto waiting buses.  The trekking groups had an even harder job of deciding what they will need to carry on their backs.  Everything having to pass the scrutiny of Olly and Lynne the Mountain Leaders, acting as hard task masters as their first food drop will be in five days.

In the evening the venturers were treated to a great slide show presentation showing just how much they had done over the last five days and leaving them in awe of what they will experience in the next nine weeks.

As Saturday dawned the air was full of excitement, and the sound of a few early moring yawns, as everyone woke to say their final goodbyes before heading off to their various project sites.  By 8:30 field base was left with an eerie silence as the sixty eight venturers and PM's left along with Anna, Polly and Polly from the office, who headed out on their first loop with the groups.

For field base the morning offered a chance to catch our breath after the last week, and enjoy a gratefully received breakfast of bacon and eggs from Country Director Mark.

As the day progressed Charlie One reached their project site in Uluvada and had a welcome meeting with the village, who have been waiting with anticipation for the groups arrival.  They have now set up camp.

Echos Three and Four have made a start on the construction on their camps with bashers springing up and tree houses being built by project partners for elephant watch.  Everyone had a fabulous nights sleep under clear and starry skys with Laura Burnett even spotting a shooting star!

Tango Six have started their trek, fording seven rivers on their first day and having a well earned peaceful night's rest.  Whilst Tango Five will be continuing the journey to their starting point this morning after spending the night in a dorm along the way.  Venturer Robbie Dwyer successfully solving the field base riddle that had been set to both Tango groups.

Two men are walking in the arctic when they discover the body of a dead man.  One man says to the other "That's the body of Adam, the first ever man".  How did he know this?

  1. Hey Anniekje!

Veel plezier, ik mis je wel hoor....
    Kusjes je zus

  3. Hi Jess (Echo 3)
Hope you are having a wonderful time sleeping under the stars in your basher and trying to control elephant territory. Hope you are getting some good pictures. Life in Tuffers seems a bit dull by comparison and we are still very jealous. It looks so beautiful.
Not sure if you have got our previous blogs or an email we sent the other day but hope we may hear from you when you get back to fieldbase next month. Meanwhile keep up with the digging! Looking forward to your solar power installation skills coming in handy when you get back to keep the sheep out in Combe! xxMum and Dad

  11. Hey Kavita (Echo Three)

How are you doing? Hope you are well and enjoying the expedition.

Hope the repairing and digging of new elephant proof trenches and putting up a solar power electric fence is going well.

Maybe you have seen elephants already during the work being done !!

All of us are well here. The weather is getting very cold and raining as per usual. At least you will be enjoying nicer sunnier weather sleeping under the stars....

Have a great time out there and regards from all of us here. Its quiet in the house without you - no one to make noise!! However, the next door neighbours dog is still loud barking at 7am and baby crying at random times as well !!

    Have a great time
Lots of love mum dad deep.

    Aimee Welch - Charlie One

Hi Aimee, I wonder if you are as good at building as Bob the Builder's helper Wendy?!! Funny that she shares a name with your favourite aunt!

Keep going and remember one of your sayings "when the going gets tough, the tough get going"!!

That couldn't be said of Ginger, who is now being treated to the oil filled radiator near her basket being turned to 'high'....... The rest of us are donning hats and gloves as the temperature drops.

Poppy is, of course, scampering around and enjoying rolling around in the wet leaves and mud.

Missing you and sending lots of love from us all Mummy xxx

Hey Kim, Me and Kylie will put up the christmas decorations for you. I know you hate doing it but going halfway across the world to get out of it is not only selfish but also a little extreme... anyway have fun, miss you etc etc

p.s. Money has been a little tight so I moved a gypsy circus performer into your room for a while. I knew you wouldn't mind.
