Weekly Round Up and a Bit More

Firstly a big thank you to Dog on the Blog for the Haribo - don't tell the others but you are a bit of a favourite here at fieldbase! We even have a message for you below.

So what is everyone up to? Time for a big round up in the venturer's  final week of phase 2...

Charlie 2.

Charlie 2 have been on a trip to Ooty also known as Snooty Ooty for its historic Britsh connotations. The Lonely Planet Guide describes Ooty's charm as follows

"Even the typical chaos of India becomes somehow subdued in the shadow of the hills. Therin lies Ooty's charm especially when you throw in her quirks a jumble of Hindu temples and ecotourism, overlaid by a veneer of manicured British aesthetic and for the hell of it a garden dedicated to thread."

The group relaxed here after all of their hard work, tootling around on pedlows on the reservoir. Although it is time, I am afraid, to name and shame, Sophie Cragg, our very own field base finance wizard and now turned PM who chickened out of going on one of those very scarey pedlows. Sophie, shame on you!

It gets even better for Charlie 2 as the group saw an elephant roaming through the tea plantations on their way back to Kudimery.

As for the progress on the project it is all going to plan. Floors are cemented, painting is completed and roofs are repaired. Well done Charlie 2!

Charlie 4

Charlie 4 have also been on trips. They have been to the golden temple at Bylakuppe to see the 18 m high gold plated Buddha and yesterday they were treated to a trip to the Mysore Palace as reward for all their hard work.

Progress at the school is also coming along tremendously well and the group have dug three cess pits, the foundations for the walls of the building are built and the group hope to get the pillars up today.  Hard work but very much worthwhile.

The group have also been managing to spend as much as 4 hours a day teaching  the school children. More on Charlie 4 later this week as there is an opening ceremony on Wednesday. Look out for the photographs. They will be coming soon but for the time being here is a quick photograph of  the group.

The Trekkers.

The trekking groups have had a lot of coverage this phase so only a brief one on them this time, Tango 7 embarked on their bamboo race. I know that Lucy's team were victorious so we offer our commiserations to Benn's team. There appears to be a common theme of the girls winning out on the water although I am informed that the teams this time were indeed mixed before I get into lots of trouble for my sexist remarks!

Tango 6 plough on and they address a 26k walk today. They started at 3am so hopefully most of this distance is behind them already. Good Luck Tango 6, my thoughts are with you but my feet on this ocassion are happily resting!

Echo 4 and Echo 5 ...

The Echo groups have settled into their new homes at Kottakkadavu and they swiftly dealt with the dead snake in their water source! They are also collectively calling themselves "Echo 9" as the groups are so close together.

They have hit the ground running as already they have cleared a massive 200 metres of land in preparation for the elephant fencing and I understand that the fence poles are going out today. Claire and James are out with the groups as we speak and will return with more photographs tomorrow. Watch this space.

Which brings me swiftly on to drawing your attention to an article that was featured in the Telegraph which discusses the huge problem of elephant and human conflict.  The article heartbreakingly tells the story of a farmer whose crops were destroyed three times by the elephants. As the elephants returned for a fourth time the farmer chose to attack the elephant electrocuting the elephant to protect his livelihood and family. The farmer now faces three years of imprisonment. This is an ongoing problem in India as 29,000 elephants compete with 1.2 billions people for land as elephants frequently invade crops and kill 200 - 300 Indians every year.

  9. For Rachel Hard Echo 4

It was great to get your message and to know that all is well. Worcestershire have just beaten Middlesex: first win since 2008! Middx included Andrew Strauss. Gabriel gave him a 'high five' as he came across the pavilion but fortunately it did Straussy no good - out cheaply in both innings.

I am on my second week of new placement and really enjoying it, journey is not too bad either. It is just starting to get warm here enough for me to take my hood down and people have started having barbecues so everywhere smells good.

    Hi Amy,

Nearly at the end of the trek so I hope the feet and your morale have remained in tact.Back here we have finally been blessed with some warm days, played golf in a tee shirt on Saturday. Dad and I played a competition together and were still talking at the end!! actually we played a steady game but not well enough for the prizes.
J is revising daily, sadly driving test a no go, rebooked already! No evidence of prep for exams by R, whats new there. He seems to manage to plan his social life so well and if he could just apply those organisational skills to his studies I have no doubt he would fly.
Dad is back at work this week but then off next week for our anniversary, although I will be back at work next week!! Grandma has had all clear from her investigations re her ticker (the one's which were done months ago) - had a check up today and discharged.
Dogs fine but scruffy. Booked in for stripping in two weeks time so they should look good when you get home.
I hope you have not lost too much weight on the trek and that you are keeping well. It is a fantastic achievement well done.
Our landline number has changed, fieldbase should have been emailed the new one - I will explain when we speak next.
Missing you obviously but J and R are making enough mess to make me feel you are at home.
    Love you Mum XXXXXXXXX

Have received reports that you are enjoying this whole trekking malarkey, even without 14 different conditioners and curl enhancers. Could this be the start of a new regime of camping, wildlife activites and no showers for you?
So what are the plans for afterwards? I'm thinking about a jaunt to venezuela with elo if i can scrape the cash up from somewhere.
Just trying to get some of bloody work done, very much wishing i was with my raleigh boys and girls doing the whoel trekking thing.

How's it all going? It now seems so strange not having spoken to you for soooooo long! I trust that you are well and happy! I sent your P45 to the tax office a couple of weeks ago and James will keep an eye on the post in London. Jamie has been accepted at Cirencester so is happy about that. Dan is still awaiting his visa confirmation, so we may be seeing him sooner than we thought!! Niamh is doing well, would you believe her bedroom is no longer a breeding ground for unknown medical cures!!! She got A* in the one history paper that she's got the result for. Have you any more thoughts about staying on longer? love you lots and lots and missing your hugs! Keep safe!!!

Hope you won't be too tired for Gabriels Confirmation which is the day after you get back. I don't think he has even decided on a name but I think he wants to be Gabriel John John? It is Amelias on the Sunday but I have not really thought about that! Maybe you, me and Verity will go with Nan and Grandad as it is the qualifying Fleadh that day? Which means I will have to have that Monday off as well!!!

Bark, bark, owllll ! How is everyone? Glad the Haribos went down well. I thought they were bones from Harry so I was not impressed when I found they were all soft. Master even fooled me with the pigs belonging to Percy for you, not at all like the pigs ears I like. So hope you enjoy them. But tell George the Gecko I have found loads of spiders. He’d love them. They are all coming out the gravel by the wall of the house; the warm sun must be waking them up. Hundreds of them so I go along licking them up, but they don’t stick to my tongue, like George so most of them run up the wall through your bedroom window...... Hope you’ve had a good walk. Master took me up on the moor today, great fun. Completely pooped now. Did you like the fun on the lake, did your team win? Master tried to get me in the river today too, but I just jumped from rock to rock, I’m not getting wet until it is much warmer...Master has made me a new shed, which is nice and I sleep in there now. Also a pen round it with a dog flap to the shed. ‘spect I’ll do a bit of howling when I try that out. But he says that’s it – he’s not doing anymore projects with me around now! Well hope you have a good rest back at base after your long walkies, and enjoy your pigs. I’m off to chase Molly........

    Hi Charles,

Hope you are well and that the trek has been successful and you are not feeling too exhausted! We are really looking forward to hearing all about it. I can't believe that you have only just over three weeks to go now until the end of the expedition.

Sophie and I are in Suffolk and are returning to London on Sunday. Daddy is coming down today, work permitting. Yesterday, Sophie and I went to Southwold and enjoyed browsing in the shops and wandering through the town.

I played golf with Lottie the other day, it was nice to see her and I believe Freddie will be down for most of the summer.

Grandma and Grandpa are coming down on Tuesday for a week and Daniel is coming for the first few days. He is trying to organise some golf lessons with Simon.

Hope all continues to go well.

    With love,

    Mum

PS Sophie has just noticed your new facebook status! Well done from all of us, 210km really is a HUGE achievement and you should be so proud of yourself; we certainly are.

The garden here has suddenly burst into life and I have finally remembered to plant the garlic and potatoes you bought! Beautiful sunny day today - odd to realise that there is a thick cloud of volcanic ash up there somewhere which has brought about grounding of ALL flights in the UK and a number of Scandinavian countries until it passes over(eruption of Icelandic volcano)!!!

Thank you so much for all the messages they mean so much and I love hearing all the news from home. We've nearly finished phase 2 - this time next week I'll be trekking....! Just a requests - could you please go to the Emirates site and find out how much in advance I need if I want to change my flight. For BA I think you have to give 72 hours so it will be something similar. Also I'll have access to phone on Friday afternoon so I'll give you a call - will you be free at work? If I ring you there?

Things are pretty much the same over here - you'll be pleased to know that I am keeping your house in good shape! ;)
Me and dad are doing the garden this weekend and have installed an alarm - getting it all ready for your return!
Only about a month left now - time has flown so quickly! Can't believe you will be back so soon...just as I was getting used to having the house to myself ;) haha only joking! I'm really looking forward to seeing you again! I have been missing you a lot recently..

  37. Dear Louise (echo 4),

HELLO! I am sat in the IC having reached the target of 1000 words and I am feeling pretty good about myself. I know tomorrow I will read it and realise I was hugely food deprived and made no sense. Anyway how are you? Are you looking forward to Liz coming? I think she is a bit worried about the flight because some volcano has erupted in Iceland and its grounding loads of flights.I think it will be fine though. I got your letter. It was lovely. It sounds like you are having a great time. Not much going on here. I am off to my formal next thursday. Excited but it means its getting closer and closer to the finish line and I have little idea about what to do next year! Ah well. Taylor Momsen (little J from gossip girl) has released a song and Fearne Cotton (who I have grown to love)has had it as her song of the week and it really isn't that bad so youtube and judge. Anyway, have to run. I have a STAR meeting. Hope you are still enjoying yourself and look forward to hearing from you soon! Amyxxx

Hey stinker! Your long suffering father here.
I expect that by the time you get this you will have returned from Kudimery and snooty Ooty.
    Well done, all of you.
I too have had my success this week.
    I won 1st prize in The Daily Telegraph's Crossword competition # 26,205.
No, really. I have the letter & the Fountain pen to prove it. The results were in the 12th April edition. Get in there!

    No word from your mother.
She is lying low to avoid the loan sharks who are driving past her house daily, baseball bats in hand. Not one of them would win a beauty pageant I tell you.

No planes in British airspace at the mo.
A volcano in Iceland has kicked off spewing millions of tons of fine volcanic ash high into the atmosphere. The weather here is good at the moment so it would enter the planes engines and clog them up and we know what would mean.

    Hey Charles,

I hope you get this message. Just wanted you to know that we have received an email saying that you have been accepted into HUGH STEWART Hall with a shared bathroom, like Daniel. We all are so excited to see you on your return. 210 km is so long, that is further than home to Suffolk, lol!!!!
I had a golf lesson today which was really fun.

    Keep having an awesome time.

  42. Message for Chiara Raine:

    Hi Kiki,
Have been trawling the Emirates site with Dad & have found nothing about how much notice you have to give if you want to change your flight but I would do it as soon as possible and def. well ahead of your flight on 9 May. Also you can't do it yourself on line, the info on the net says you have to contact the local Emirates office. There's one in Bangalore,
    GF Prestige Sigma
    No. 3, Vittal Mallya Road
    Bangalore - 560001
    Telephone +91 806 629 4444
I can give the office in London a ring tomorrow to see whether they have any more info and will update you when we speak.
Had a call from Ant this eve. Had received some parcels so a bit more cheerful. Speak soon, hopefully.Mxxx

  43. Hi Paula (Charlie 4)
I was going to start another letter to you but I don't think it would reach you before you returned. Not much happening here but nationally there has been a problem - there was a volcanic eruption in Iceland which has sent a cload of volcanic ash heading towards us (really high up) but it would effect any airplanes so most airports have been closed today from Aberdeen to London so I believe that has caused quite a few problems - they are reviewing it again in the morning.

I am starting to feel a bit better now I have been on the tablets for a week - doctor said my lungs were still crackling when I went to see him yesterday - and I have another 2 week sick note. Think we are all missing you lots now and look forward to you coming home.

    Love Auntie Ren x

Can't wait to see you when you get back and hear all your amazing stories. I wonder if you got my facebook message? Mama and Papa K were thinking of getting a pup and we were thinking of snapping up one of Rosie's if you were still planning on that kind of thing..perhaps i'll just give your mama a call as you're probably not much in the know haha.

    How are things, my darling?
We have been on our grand tour of your university offers and were very impressed with them all! If you could contact us it would be great so that we can tell you about them. It might be best if you could make your decisions this weekend as we don't know how easy it might be to havecontact with you whilst you are on your next placement- We have had no messages this last 3 weeks which we assume means that you are still having a fantastic time!!
We took Jonny back to Cambridge on Sunday, then continued on to Grandma's and Grandad's thenon to Scotland etc! We are now back at Grandma's and Grandad's and will travel home tomorrow (Saturday)

  49. For Hattie Way - in one of the trekking groups!

    Hi Hattie,

I hope you are doing well and not suffering too much! I finally got your second letter, I'll be writing you another one soon, I promise! Tilburg was great, with a reasonable amount of sun and some very productive super-comp. I feel very tired still! It was a nice week off from work though - I'm glad I took it as I've come straight back to re-writing the report which is due in next week. No rest for the wicked! I got my final exam timetable too - I finish on June 9th with everyone else in my house. Am looking forward to it!
The first live televised debate between the party leaders was last night, which Nick Clegg apparently 'won' on the ratings. It was reasonably amusing as Brown and Cameron spent far too much time attacking one another, leaving Clegg with plenty of breathing space to do well. Also ash from a volcano in Iceland has stopped flights to and from the UK so plenty of our friends are stuck in Europe after holidays!
Looking forwards to having a chat when you are back in field base!
    Love Matt xxx

  50. For Tom Saville

    Hi Tom,

We escaped from UK 2 hrs before all airspace closed so are getting to enjoy sunny La Rochelle (you were here aged 4 months!) Drive to Dinard tomorrow then back to Weymouth on ferry so plenty of time for Mum to shop. Enjoying the food as always.

Will watch recording of first Leaders debate when I get back. Libdems looking good - they get my vote.

Exeter accom opens Monday so will get your application in. Looking forward to some sailing in May hope this weather holds. We should think about a trip in September - you, Nick, James, etc.

Guess the community project starts soon. Any travel plans yet?

    Take care,

    Dad

I thought you were in the back of beyond!!! ha ha, always ready for a boogey I see.

Hi Ee! I got your letter today! it was amazing! So funny reading about your trek - that's exactly what happened to us! I've still got the hip scars even two years on and I'm very proud of them :) I also read your other letter; I'm gutted your chocolate melted in the first few days :( Enjoy digging elephant trenches and fences; its an awesome project and has immediate effects which is so satisfying. I just had a week with the OTC which was brilliant, and I've heard you've got some guys to travel with later - that's great! North India is completely different but just as much fun as the South so I'm sure you'll have a brilliant time. Keep sending letters, I love receiving them - they're taking approx 2 weeks to get to us, so I'll try to send another that will get to you in time. Miss you tons, keep enjoying the porridge! lots and lots of love Olivia xxxxx

  57. Hi Alan, I'm really not sure if you're getting any of my messages in this blog thing because I don't see them on the website even tho I see others parents/friends messages like Matt's for Hattie. Anyway I shall persevere as it may be the only way you can receive a message from home. I'm following your activities on the website and have seen the photos of the fete and your wellie-wanging and tug of war!! Not quite sure what your doing next. You must have heard about the volcanic ash stopping flights for 6 days. They have just started up again so Steve and I are still hoping we will be able to go to America next week where we will spend 3 days in Florida, see Maria in NC and go on up to Greenwich and stay with the Chiecos. Also hoping to see John Arthur in West Side Story on Broadway! Took Mark to a Skid Pan on Sunday as an 18th birthday treat- great fun for him and us spectating! Well I hope you get to read this - perhaps you could post a blog to confirm! I'm sure you're having a great time. Lots of love from Mum xxxx

  58. For Rachel Hard, Charlie 3. Dear Rachel, hope the second project is going well and that you are getting a few swims in the reservoir to cool down. Just keep away from any suspicious logs that might be crocodiles in cunning disguise! All is fine here : the weather has been extraordinarily warm and I've had some good walks on the hills. Bluebells starting to come out and promise to be glorious. Am busy with lots of singing most evenings as three choirs rehearsals have now started in earnest and chapter 8 is gearing up for our summer conmcerts. We have acquired a web designer, Emily, who is going to make us a website and a PR person in the form of Tim's sister who is an Events Organiser. There's a Promises Auction at the cathedral to raise money for the next xhoir USA tour. Chap 8 are going to sing as one of the prizes is to have a song of your choice arranged by Fiona and performed by Chapter 8 at a concert. Wish I could feel convinced there'll be a bidding war over that one! Love you very much and miss you lots, love and big hugs, mum xx
