Welcome to the Official Blog for Raleigh India 12J September - December 2012.

Here we go for one more time!

An old fashioned game of sardines kicked started allocations for phase 3 as venturers scrambled to find their well hidden PMs for the final phase. Groups found, everyone set about the task of packing group kit, tools and food for the next three weeks. This is no easy task and although the team are becoming old hands at this, it still involves many hours of counting, allocating, checking and re-checking. A special treat of chilli con carne cooked by our very own Amanda, another spectacular slide show by the Comms team Ali and Alison and some inspiring words of wisdom by Mark and we were ready to deploy.

FB team do our best to trick venturers into staying with us

Members of the new Charlie 3 find Leti and Claire hidden in the Bravo vehicle

In order to make it down to Kerala in daylight hours, the trekkers have to head off at 6am, and there were huge hugs, well wishes and even some tears as we sent them on their way. A more relaxed start for the other groups who left us by 9am.  I think these photos taken by Ali, our fantastic photographer, really show how much this team means to each other and how much they care for each other.  As a staff member it is truly a wonderful moment to share with everyone.

So heading off as part of Charlie 1 to finish the school in Mutilmoola are PMs David, Kate and Mili with Lee, Baz, Emma, Mathew, Beth, James Eyles, Chloe, Pik, Dan, Shamnad and Prajeesh.  The group will work to finish the school, toilets and choolas in time for the opening ceremony on December 12.

Meanwhile, undertaking a brand new sustainable agricultural project in Hosaheggudilu (yes it's quite the tongue twister!) Charlie 3 will be led by PMs Helen, Claire and Leti with Maddy, Rahman, Claire, Amy, Holly, Bill, Adam, Ben, Colin and Vinay. The group will stay in a school in this small village and work alongside our project partner Mykaps on a sustainable agricultural project designed to boost the livlihoods of local farmers.

Echo 4 heading off to the forest  to finish off theChowdhalli Ranger Station and Elephant Proof Trench will be led by the lovely Jeff and Frankie with Alain, James Guerney, Toby, John Paul, David Hildreth, Tina, Aravind, Pip, Nanette and Laura. The group has a big task ahead of them to finish the walls and floors of the building before it is officially opened on December 13.

Tango 6 will begin their adventure with a two-day rafting trip before heading off on their 200km trek through the beautiful Kerala. They will be led by the brilliant Dr Dave and Katie with Charles, Tony, Morten, Louis, Cristina, Chris, Sam, John Emmerson, Georgie Page, Shyam and Mikey.

Tango 6 - ready to roll Indian style and below Mikey with the prized team mascot

And last but not for a second least is Tango 7 who have the privilege of being joined by the self named 'King of India' Adam, and led by Charlie and Amy. The lucky team members are Luke, Jamie Green, Anthony, Tor, Georgie Webb, Thomas, Avaneesh, Nicola, John Springate and Boops. These guys will start trekking tomorrow and continue for the next couple of weeks before ending on the rafts.

"I'm the king of India!" ... if you say so Adam      And huge smiles from Jamie, John, Luke and Thomas

So that's where we are at folks - and as we head rapidly towards the conclusion of expedition our message to venturers and staff is to remember every day to wake up and make the absolute most of every opportunity that presents itself.  The following reading really conveys this message, we shared it with the venturers last night and I thought it would be nice to share it with you now.

The Station
Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spands the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the window we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village hails.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restless we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering - waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
"When we reach the station that will be it!" we cry. "When I'm 18" "When I buy a new 450SI Mercedes Benz!" "When we put the last kid through college" "When I have paid off the mortgage" "When I get promoted" "When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after!"

Sooner or later we must realise that there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.

"Relish the moment" is a good motto. It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.

So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more icecream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

Don't forget if you have been inspired by reading this blog there is no reason you yourself can't "Get Out Here" with us, India would love to have you!

  8. Hi Jamie Green and Happy Thanksgiving!
It sounds like you are already trekking and that you were quite busy during the turnover so you are forgiven for not communicating...Wow there were some great photos of you on the blogs and it made us so happy to see you looking healthy, happy and even clean! Can't wait to hear about your star turn as a goat. Claire will be so proud. Typecasting, however. Not a big stretch.
We are a skeletal crew here for the holiday and certainly we will be thinking of you lots. Daddy and I are each experimenting with making a pie, none of which you would probably have eaten anyway. Although perhaps you have gotten less picky, yes?? Mashed potatoes, gravy and turkey are more your speed and we will make them again when you come back. We miss you so much but are thrilled you are happy and having adventures, as you requested. LOADS of love, Mommy

  10. Hi Luke, how's it going? On to the last leg of your trip now - I bet it's flown by!! Shocked to hear you were second in the talent contest - ha ha - what happened there!! Only joking :-)

I had my first exam out here in Oz yesterday - it was a shocker - I really didn't enjoy it and cried after as it was so overwhelming! 1 down 2 more to go - they are in the areas I'm a bit more confident in so hopefully it can't get any worse!

Off to Bryon Bay today as a relaxing day and treat. Enjoying the sunshine here it's boiling - not missing the floods and rain at home at all! Missing Ben though as he's struggling through the dark nights and cold days all by himself :-(

Enjoy the last leg of your trip, see you in a few weeks little bro,

    Lots of love

Sounds like a fantastic project. Looking forward to hearing all your news and about all of your wonderful adventures.

I'm just back from Marrakesh which was chaotic, smelly but good fun. You know me and bazaars! The weather was fantastic - hot and sunny in the day and nice and cool by night (perfect for sleeping).

Being ICT challenged i have just come across the Talent night photos and the 'No, seriously...' Tango 6 bus photos on the last 2 blog postings. Gutted your team didn't win, but the feet are looking OK, thankfully. Keep them dry as often as you can. Is the camera working now? We envy you the next bit rafting and trekking to Kerala.

  19. Dan, I won't say your nickname we'll keep that one quiet.

Mum's been pestering me to write on the blog so here I am. Better late than never. Did'nt think you were on any of the last set of pictures until hawk eye mum noticed my watch. Glad its still working.

Glad to see you've got a cracking tan, keep the cream on your nose. Not long left now, keep enjoying it. Luke saw the last blog, said you looked pretty dirty, I said it looks about time for a haircut, but I'm sure you were expecting that.

Same old going on back here, usual weather not good have'nt had a sunday game for ages and been out for a curry last week after pro 5. Not the same as what your having I'm sure. City haven't had a game at home for ages. At home to sheff Utd tomorrow. They have had two away games though drew 1-1 at forest and got stuffed 4-1 at west brom. Deja vous!

Im just wondering what you did for your talent competition. Im struggling to think?? Nights been planned out with the boys upon your return, looking forward to having you home.

    See you soon

    Dear Jamie,
This must have been the first Thanksgiving without all of the brothers together. We missed you. It has been very peaceful here. Ben goes back to PA today (Sunday). Mom and I will go to Broadway to see a show. Christmas season is in full swing in NY. We noticed that Sam was looking taller and taller. We measured him against the door frame in my office. He's 6 feet tall. Can't wait to see you. You look so very happy in your photos. We miss you. We love you.

  29. Hello Nicky! Hope trekking is going ok and I hope that you haven't become poorly again. Mummy and I spent the afternoon xmas shopping in London today and then we went to Won Kei for lunch YUMMY (sorry probably not what you want to hear right now...) But dont worry you havent been missing out too much, it has been raining practically non-stop here for about 2 weeks! Yuck. On the up side I only have one more week left at work then off to Paris the week after.
In other news I got accepted onto the China internship thingy so I'll be going out to Beijing in January! Scary but exciting stuff!!! I'll be out there until March so I won't be here when you get back :-(
Good luck with the hiking, Just think how fit you're going to be by the end of it and how strong your legs will be for snowboarding!!!
Will post a comment again soon (probably quite a lot after next week as I will be unemployed...!!)! Lots of Love Anita xxxxx

  30. Good evening Ben John Strachan. I hope all is going well with you and the weather is allowing you to carry out your project effectively. Wet and cold in Chester but we are all ok here.Thought I would slip this quick note in before Mum calls me for dinner - usual Sunday fayre and I will raise a glass to you and Charlie 3 and all the other Raleigh teams for success in their respective phase 3 projects.
Played tennis this morning and went for swim/steam room after so a bit weary tonight. Mum back ok from M'kech, Cal due to start 5th week w/e and thinks it may be the last but has said that before. Dunc and Greg ok. Don't want to wish away your last 2/3 weeks but looking forward to seeing you on 16/12. Just putting final touches to your home coming meal menu!! Mum dusted your room today...it looks a lot larger now !!
Think that is all for now.....the lads got a good point away at Villa yesterday and the foreign legion beat the gooners today so we creep up to 3rd spot.
Mum and I went on Chester Ghost trail last night. Quite good fun,a bit tame but we got into the spirit of things!!
All the best for the next few weeks. Hope you are keeping well and have found a remedy for the fungus that appears to be creeping around your chin!!!

went on a walk in the forest at the weekend, ended up taking an unexpected swim; slipped on a stepping stone and slid all the way into the river.. good one, so ended up leaving completely soaked, with some impressive bruising (couldnt sit down the next day) and 21 insect bites... thats just on my legs, i gave up counting them after that! so I hope your hard trekking is going more succesfully then my gentle ´stroll` in the forest! sure all coping fine though, how is it i manage to make an absolute fool of myself no matter how simple the task eh?! love pollyxxx

    Dear Maddy
Sorry to hear that you have been poorly and hope that you are feeling much better now.
Last Thursday Kevin took Mollie and me down to Katherine for her doctorate award in Coventry Cathederal and your letter couldn't have arrived at a better time - Friday morning while we were having breakfast. Kevin looked after the children and we went off to Coventry - got a little movie to show you. Then we came back and had a chinese takeaway - won't say anymore because K and K have written to you.
I have been telling all my friends to look at the website this week at your good picture in the van.Its great being able to keep in touch not like when Kevin was on Raleigh.
Will speak to Mum tonight and hope to hear good news of you.
    Lots of love.

Advent service at the Cathedral on Saturday and Town twinning Christmas tree yesterday...Tom helped but it was not the same as having you there...some lovely trees and some very unusual ones. Christmas is also approaching at school where the trees went up today and the Nativity rehearsal is in full swing. PGL have offered you a job from early Feb at Le Pre Catelan, I said that you would confirm after you were home.

  42. Hi Maddy
It was so good to speak with you today and fingers crossed you are now over the worst and making a speedy recovery! I'm sorry that I did not stay on the phone too long but I had a terrible echo of everything I said and it was hindering what you were saying, but I managed to hear the important bits!
Auntie Anne rang to find out how you are, Gran Oakes had told her you were poorly and I said that on your return we probably will have to feed you up with some of her home cooking. So that's something to look forward to!Let us know of any special requests.
This morning we had our first hard frost - the nab was all covered with a dusting and the sun was rising as I walked Caddy giving everything a pink glow, it was lovely and felt that Christmas is definitely on its way. When you get back we will go and pick the holly I have found some bushes with berries on so hopefully there will still be some left.
I have been invited to the school's nativity play and the juniors are having a concert in Church 'The Aliens are Coming!'should be good fun. Mrs McLoughlin has been asking about you and wonders if you might like to come into school in the New Year and share some of your adventure?
Well Mother Goose signing off for now - take care little one and I will write again soon.
    Lots of Love
Mum and Dad and all the family xxxx

  45. Jamie Green,
It was so great to see the pictures of you on the blog! Props for the goat, reminds me of Levi and ToCo '05.

Hope the trekking is going awesomely. You must be having a great time being outside. I certainly missed it this weekend at the camp sing. A bunch of campers and staff were there, including EJ, Andrew F., Danny, Kate, Dean, Tony, Judy, Levi, Jenn, Colin, Mira, Jesse, Previ, Greg, Kendra, etc. Jake brought his bass, and he and Levi played their parody for everyone (including all the parents--it was awesome!) A bunch of the counselors asked about you and were excited to learn that you were having a blast. We went out to dinner afterwards and laughed about the summer.

Other than that, I slept for a bunch of Thanksgiving break, after the Carousel strike that went until 7amish. Catching up on sleep was very necessary. I also played the roles of tech support (tried to fix my family's computer, ended up figuring out which new one to buy) and babysitter (picked up Noah from school and drove him to Oliver! rehearsal). We spent Thanksgiving at Bubbe's as usual, not much else to report. Greta's been doing a bunch of trigonometric substitution in math, and I've been listening to Klezmer nonstop, which has been ~extra~ cool. I'm in my last week of classes now, with one exam and four huge papers left to write. It will all get done somehow. I'm eagerly awaiting all the stories you will have to tell when you get back. Have I mentioned today...?

    Love,
    Ava
