With a new Phase just having started, the PMs and Venturers are settling into their new homes, getting acquainted with prying school kids, waiting for their basher-bamboo to arrive, getting started carrying bricks and digging holes, or fighting the dirt on trek. I myself will join Tango 5 for some days to explore the Western Ghats with them and get some firsthand information for you. In the meantime, let’s take a minute, or rather 15:27 minutes, to look back on Phase 1:
But this is not everything (we are on fire today)! We also prepared a little account of our Changeover highlight – The Indian Holi Festival turning Venturers into Spartans and Fieldbase into a double rainbow all the way.
And here something to look forward to:
And here something to look forward to:
- On 12 March some of the Fieldbase staff will go out and collect material for a sequel of The Loop trilogy. They will leave to visit Charlie 1, Charlie 2, and Echo 4, so make sure to post your messages to those venturers in due in time in order for them to be passed on.
- And of course there will be news about the dirt-battling, shower-avoiding Tango 5, which will involve very-early-morning trekking, trying-to-get-some-washing-done-at-the-same-time rafting, and hopefully-downhill biking. It will probably also involve a detailed review of driver Big Manju’s taste in music, as I will need to share a car with him for six hours straight.

ReplyDeleteHi there!
Have just seen the latest blog and videos - it all looks really amazing.
Well how was your birthday? Did anything happen to you??? We raised a glass to you at home in the evening with Cathy and Iain who both send their love. So great to speak with you but such a shame that it all ended so abruptly. (I will phone Orange and see if I can get some credit put onto your phone). Everyone well here. We have a houseful tonight with JamesH, Glenn, Alex,Eliot, Woody and Batesie (tho not too certain as to whether last 2 can make it). I think Dad and i will just go out!!
Forgot to ask you what animals you had seen (apart from turtles that is!) Also did you get a watch in the end and did it really matter??
So glad you are having such a great time. Enjoy your community project. Thinking of you. With love Mum and Dad x
Dear Jonny
ReplyDeleteI have just been enjoying seeing some of your recent activities, you are obviously having a great time !
Not a lot has changed , was it really 67 years ago that I was there ? I can almost smell it !!
Keep the diary going, it will all get mixed up if not. Its great for us seeing your day to day works. Your mum finds it a great comfort seeing you obviously enjoying your ‘gap year’, it will stay with you for ever.
Nothing exciting happens here - much ! Grandpa B just nearly burnt his house down but Mum says that he is quite OK and luckily not much damage done !!
Good luck with the rest of your trip !

ReplyDeleteBEXTER!!!
SO unbelieveably fantastic to speak to you the other day - i needed a good gossip badly! Mum and I have just come back from a trip up to london, went to national gallery, checked some caravaggio pics etc - great fun....but not as fun as you are having. The pictures just look incredible sooooooo jealous. Thought I would let you know that made the yoga bag for jude and she's now asked me to make three more! guess the money will be going towards saving up for this in two years time!!! Hope the letter has got to you by now, if not no worries just the general chit chat. Hope you are well and having as much of an amazing time as it looks...and not too tanned....:P
TONS AND TONS OF LOVE

P.S mum is gathering together a food/general hygiene (:P) parcel for you to devour - including fruit pastels...

ReplyDeleteOh hey there Miss Fairlie,
Things continuing to look amazing for you out in India!! I am loving reading the blog for the past few days and especially LOVE your pose for the photo of the people in Charlie 1 (very Ursula shall we say).
AHH funny story for you.. so I had to got to drive one of the girls cars here earlier in the week. We can just say it was a nightmare!! Hahha. I was definitely no pro without the gearstick.. very confusing and everyone was finding it hilarious because I had no idea to hardly even start the car (amateur)! Definitely have a few more stories for you but I have heard that these blog extracts get read out in a group so I think I will save you the embarrassment/awkwardness. But anyway, love you and miss you lots and lots.

ReplyDeleteNice positioning again in the latest photo. Right at the front. Splendid work. You're so thoughtful when it comes to Mum and her (constantly disappearing) glasses. Not a new t-shirt this time though - we recognise that one....so you won't be accused of shopping in this blogpost. Happy news. I'm at home again! Also I'm currently on your computer....see....two can play at your fun game of "When my sister isn't here I own the top floor and everything on it". I like owning the top floor. It's a good game Lulu, well done for starting it.
That's all for now.
Hope all is well on the other side of the world still, lots and lots of love, Hatti xxxx
PS I did a facemask alone the other day. I did ask Mike to join in but he refused. Which I thought was quite rude but oh well.

ReplyDeleteIt was so good to see the slide show of phase 1.
I really am missing having you around, the house feels empty. What did you do to your arm? See you seem to be the only one with a bandage, whats new. Uncle Lee says the picture of you digging must have been staged. Chole got upset on Friday night when she was looking at some photos of you on the computer. She said it was not long before you would be coming home because it was nearly her birthday. She said she was going to the airport with uncle pete to pick you up. I explained you might be staying on. She became upset and said I was wrong aunty Abz said she'd be home after her birthday. Blackburn won today, nathan in a better mood they are now 5th from bottom. I am going to seed you some goodies over you just might get them before you change over. well i will go keep enjoying your time over there oh take care on the bike think back to Germany. love and miss you mum xx

ReplyDeleteHi Becs, hope all is good. I gather from Mum that you're having a fantastic time still and are probs gonna travel on after, nice! watch out though, in the pic on the blog when your group is walking in it looks like the beardy man behind you is about to hack you down! Good to see your shoes haven't got anymore filthy either, not even joking.
I've had the guys up for my b'day this weekend, as you can imagine it's been a very messy one and my house has been destroyed. It's been fun though.
I hear you're off to dig some toilets or something now. Make sure you wash... Was so good to hear from you the other day, I was stuck in THE most boring lecture (microbial genomics) and it kept me entertained.
Look forward to hearing from you soon, hope you keep on having a fantastic time, so jealous!
Lots of love, Big Bro Ben

ReplyDeleteHi Becky
I thought I would rattle off a quick message in time to catch you on the loop.
It is Sunday morning and Imo and I have just walked to the village shop to get the paper while Dad headed off on a quick (!) 55 miler on the bike with Pete Hawkins (the race is next weekend and they are looking like worried mamils!). James is actually studying - he has exams next week.
Rachael has some gorgeous piglets in the next door field and they keep breaking out and having to be shooed back out of our garden. They are the funniest things squealing as they flee.
Imo and I had a really good day in London yesterday - she lead me on a tour of the National Gallery catching the pictures she is studying - it was great to go with someone who actually knew about them. And then I could feel smug as I got lots of work done on the train too.
The Blog is brilliant - so interesting and so funny, it was lovely to see the slide show too and it will be such fun for you to see them again when you are back.
Off to find out from Alex (Dave and Anne's daughter) how to look after chickens this afternoon. Think I might have to have pretty ones after all. But definitely no cockerel!
Masses of love,
Mum xxxxxx

ReplyDeleteHi Biz, Loved your letter and photos on the blog and have just watched the videos - golly what amazing photos and all that bright paint for the Holi festival. Looks like you're working hard and playing hard - brilliant! Truffle and I have just come back from a weekend in London with Yiayia and Nicky, Suzy and the boys were there too. We went to several exhibitions and I took YY out to dinner. Then on Saturday we watched the rugby - Wales still on course for the grand slam!!!Daddy comes home this afternoon from his skiiing and it sounds as thought he had a great time. Lots of skiing lots of eating lots of chat - and a little bit of drinking I suspect - prrrrfect for Dad!
Have a super time on your next phase - how funny that you and Flora have swapped projects!

ReplyDeleteRoossieee ouwe gek,

The end of a poor week for City, Barney in Charlie 2, a dismal performance at Swansea saw us go down 1-0 and we can have no arguments. A really dire display. And the SBs scraped home against a 10 man baggies. Time to regroup and get back on track against Lisbon Thurs night. Hope those lave are coming on nicely.

Hope you are enjoying the next part of your adventure. Sounds pretty exhausting!

Dad's marathon training was going well until he hurt his knee! Hopefully resting up for a couple of days will do the trick but he's not very happy. Sarah's in London at the moment and managed to catch up with Peter for lunch.

Hele dikke knuffel, Mama xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am busy interviewing 'my' Mums again, they all have beautiful 10 month old babies now and I have to keep reminding myself that I am there to talk to the Mums not play with the babies. Wendy is still marking. Helen Thomas asked about you on Facebook. Anyway, will be in touch again soon, love Mum xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxoxo

Haven't been there for ages so that should be nice. 'What's Cooking' now seems to be called 'The beef grill and bar' which doesn't sound too good for us vegetarians but they still do the mozarella fingers and the vege fajitas, so maybe we will all survive! ReplyDeleteHello old bean, Guy here. Just seen the Holi video...looks like a lot of fun - but I don't envy you the washing of your clothes! Hope all is well and that you haven't managed to chop off any fingers with your machete...All well in London as the sun has finally come out. Snooks recovered from a brief cold - but she's lost her taste palette so is now drinking lots of tea (!) She is also watching this new BBC series set in...Cadgwith! We think we even spotted the Janner once - in the pub! Pops is whining like an old maiden as usual but has found a new series of crime books to keep him happy (Sicilian this time). I'm up to my usual tricks. We're all missing you...and envying you all the fun you're having in the videos/photos on the Raleigh blog. Have a topping time, love, Guy.
What ho young Max!
Good to see you demolishing some poor chap with the paint at the Holi festival...I trust he got you back? It looked wonderful fun. Very jealous this end of it all.
We loved the video you all made, your 'Attenborough' impression and your hat. Splendid.
Guyboy is astonished to see so many photo's of you and the video. 'Nothing like that in my day' he says nostalgically. Just as well I say.
I'm presuming now your on 'bog duty' - digging them that is? Now sure when you'll get this or if you got my last missive to you - when you were in Mysore at the internet cafe - but we're thinking of you, though naturally a little less now you're digging toilets of course!
Rugger last weekend for Mutti and I, and this weekend too, the final 3 matches, all on one day...will be stocking up the food parcels so we don't have to move too much.
Take care and dig a bog for us..and we'll write again soon
All love

ReplyDeleteHello little one - well the week is whizzing by. Yesterday I went to an Online Publishers conference - vay vay highbwow - and the Pres was over from Boston so we headed out for a Big Night .... martini cocktails (you would like) and Savoy Grill (you would also like!). Then worse for wear this morning, we went to a garden centre for the annual big buy, plus I'm doing more design work in the front which I am carefully negotiating with Mum .... and winning, so all good.
So much going on it's hard to keep up and sometimes better just to pour a G&T and watch telly; but I have Madrid, Berlin, and Tokyo coming up plus Rome with Mum plus CB is talking about ski, plus we need to fix something for the Summer and also for Christmas ..... see what I mean. And what's it all about anyway? Far better to do like you - sitting cross-legged atop a mountain watching the sunset and munching a keema nan.
Did you know there are 200,000 snake charmers in India with approx 800,000 performing snakes, and that snake charming is illegal under the cruelty to animals legislation unless they are registered with a chip, but only 43 snakes were registered ...., plus cobras are deaf so they can't actually here the music. There you go.
Stells called for passport details for the flight to the music thing.
Mo and Veronica are well and send their love.
Take care. AML Dad x

Hope you enjoyed trek and didn't mind the leeches too much. I put on sooo much weight on trek I couldn't help myself around all those Parle G biscuits and peanut bars!! I'm so jealous you were there for Holi it looks so much fun. It's so weird being on the other side of the blog, can't wait to hear all about your trip when you're back! Love Amelia xxxxx
Hi Matt (PM Echo 3)
ReplyDeleteHave spent the week wondering how phase 2 is going. I guess you are enjoying the coast and the turtles. (I understand you shouldn't bbq them!) Karl dropped by and promised to send his best regards - I hope he isn't going to mention lanonin on this blog! (He really is a very sick man - but an old friend nonetheless) Mum is v pleased that Clarey is moving closer to home in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to Monday; the lake opens for trout fishing. Venice next week - v exciting. (Jasper isn't looking forward to cat prison needless to say). Will skype when you're back at FB.
Lot of love

Oh dar Barney in Charlie 2, the end of a horrible week. First half against Lisbon was probably as bad as we've been since Swansea last week. Down 2-0 at half time and looking like a disaster. A couple of changes and the second half was a considerable improvement with two for Kun and a Balo pen. Out on away goals, with Joe Hart heading just wide right at the end. League it is then. SBs well stuffed and out too. Keep those lavs coming.

ReplyDeleteGood morning and greetings from the drizzle here at Cuxham. We have the cows in the field next to us with newborn calves and even I have to admit they are rather sweet. Willow likes to bark at them which I am sure is meant in a friendly way....Spring is definitely coming as when I get up it is light and there is a cacophony of tweeting (and not the digital type). Mama and I are planning a trip to Colombia in May. I think of you trekking when I go into your room to open the shutters and see your lovely comfy bed....it is still there as is the FLUSHING loo. Hope all going well and love from us all. Pa and Ma. xx
Dominic Quinn Charlie 1
ReplyDeleteHi Dom
How are you? We can't wait to see the results of your brick-laying and plumbing apprenticeship. Remeber though-no racing-it's the quality that matters!
We're ready to set off for Scotland tomorrow morning bright and early. Packing all our thermals and wet weather gear-whaever happens it'll be atmospheric. We'll keep up with what you're doing via the blog and I've got a couple of huge stamps for sending postcards to India.
Now what you really want to know is what's been happening this weekend in the FA Cup. So...Everton and Sunderland need to replay becuase they drew 1-1. Whoever wins plays LIverpool (yay!!) we beat Stoke 2-1 this afternoon. Two great goals from Suarez and Downing and we really controlled the game in spite of Crouch (the traitor!) scoring one back off a corner. Also through are Chelsea who beat Leicester 5-2. Torres scored twice after a goal drought of 5 months! Tragically Tottenham v Bolton game was abandoned after Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch (he's still in intensive care in a critical condition). So possibly a London derby and a Merseyside derby. The semis are at Wembley the weekend before you get back. Let's see if we can give you a Wembley final.
Meanwhile we're looking forward to hearing more of your adventures and of course talking to you when you can. We're counting down now 'til you're back. Lots of love, missing you, Mum and Dad
For Rory Lightfoot. Tango 5.
ReplyDeleteHi there Rory - here we are in a rather cool Totnes, wondering how you and the rest of the lively-looking Tango 5 are doing. Having seen you all in multi-colour - has it come off yet? - we can't help wondering what you're all upto now. Whatever it is, we're sure you're all having a great time. We're looking forward to hearing (seeing) all about it, before too long! Big hugs from The Totnes 2.
Hi Charlotte Barlotte!
