Changes for our Echo Groups

Following on from previous updates about changes in policy due to satellite phone usage in India, I bring news to you today about changes that have taken place for the two Echo groups.

Our Environmental Partners the Karnataka Forest Department held meetings with us over the Easter weekend (yes that is another of the 19 national annual holidays celebrated in India compared to our meager 8), to discuss how they could continue to safely support us whilst working in the forest in view of the communications restrictions. We concluded that they are not 100% happy for us to remain in these remote locations despite the working communications coverage we have established there. We agreed to follow their request and relocate both Echo 4 and Echo 5 for the remainder of this expedition.

As you can imagine, coming up with a viable solution to ensure everyone is happy, is no mean feat, but coming up with solutions is what Raleigh is all about really, and as if often in the case, challenging situations bring out the best in people. The team at field base kicked into action and I am happy to say that in the space of 3 days we were able to relocate both groups from their camps in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary to a new location in the Nilgiri Mountains in Tamil Nadu.

Kottakkadavu is a Tribal village populated by 15 families from the Kuttanayakan Tribe. They are almost self sufficient in agriculture but economically they are still poor. Regularly the village is visited by wild boar and elephants attracted by easy pickings in the villagers fields. CTRD Trust have for some time been planning to assist the village in eco-development and with the opportunity which landed of 30 hard working venturers and project managers for 4 ½ weeks, was able to accelerate plans and provide a protective fence around the village to stop the crop raiding wildlife!

Mark and myself went to meet each of the groups and help facilitate the change, and yet again I was overwhelmed by the capacity of people to deal with change and adapt accordingly. Of course the groups were disappointed to leave the places in which they had worked so hard, and to which they had become attached to, but they understood the circumstances and demonstrated the resilience, flexibility and positive outlook that we ask of leaders, and I congratulate them for this.

I would like to recognize the role of the volunteer fieldbase team – Tom, Helen, Jo, James and Claire who have been incredibly supportive and worked incredibly hard to facilitate the changes as well as the volunteer Project Managers – Kevin, Dr Tom, Rosie, Sam, Clive and Priya – we really couldn’t ask for a more committed group of people who continue to work tirelessly to ensure the expedition's success.

And finally, in the words of William Maphoto, ‘Change is inevitable…. Adapting to change is unavoidable, it’s how you do it that sets you together or apart.’   I guess here in India and on Raleigh we have many opportunities to build on our ability to adapt - lessons I think will hold us all in good stead in the future.

The group spent a day and night at CTRD headquarters- our project partner before being officially welcomed by the community

Project managers with Dave and Ruth carried out the project planning visit before being joined by the rest of the crew

  1. To all at Raleigh India:

Well done :-) As with everything, you've done a brilliant job.

    Hey David (Smith) Echo Groups

Even though it's Saturday, I'm up early as a few of us from work are going to Calais for the day (I know that doesn't sound very exciting from where you are!)The sun is shining anyway.

Wow, you're having an interesting time with a mid-phase change. Glad to see you all looking so cheerful in the pictures. Great you got to go on the recce too. Enjoy the rest of your time at the new village (I watched a programme on the Nilgiri Hill Railway - superb). Much love Ma xx

Just read Echo 5 has had to be relocated. You were so fortunate to have had a full session in that paradise.

We have blue skies here this weekend (even if still pretty chilly. A wonderful Somerset Spring evening was partly undermined by a crescendo of noise from numerous lawnmowers working hard in the village. Even I did my bit!!

Annunziata Rees-Mogg, with a name like that has to be the Tory candidate, called yesterday. Tried to set the cat on her, but Charlie wouldn't budge from the Aga. (Reports in British media of posties being savaged by a 17 year old cat and now refusing to deliver mail to the address. Not sure what they must feed that cat on but whatever it is I want some!).

All well here and in London. BTW we heard from Joe they arrive @ Singapore today. Both well and having a great time.

Take care and enjoy the big mountain climb this week. Sounds like a really tough challenge! Good luck!

    lots of love dad xxx

  4. Hi Kate,

Hope you are well? Everyone here is fine. We got another letter from you this morning but I cannot believe that you have not got any from us?

The weather is lovely (for a change) and it is the Grand National today. I am going for an outsider, King Johns Castle, but and I don't normally do this, I am also going to put something on the favourite, Big Fella Thanks, because Ruby Walsh is riding it. I think I should have called Eddie Ruby!!!! At 50p each way or a pound to win I am never going to get rich! Lol.

We are going to see Finbar Furey tonight and I am looking forward to it. Even though it is only at the Salvo!

Will let you know if I win the National or the lottery!

Lots and lots of love Mum, Dad and VEG xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  5. To all at Raleigh India: I know you have been really busy having to re-organise things for the Echo groups but is there any updates on Charlie 4 - Please...............

    Hi Paula (Charlie 4)
The sun is shining here it is a beautiful spring day and that just cheers us all up. Mark on babysitting duty tonight (never thought I'd see that!!!) 'cos Stuart & Claire both at work. Mind you wait 'til you have to do babysittin duties - thats even scarier!! Funny incident in the garden yesterday - Cyril squirrel just buried something and a magpie watched him then went to retrieve the booty - no way - Cyril went mad at him and chased him. It was so funny to watch. I slept all night last night without coughing so obviously all the tablets are starting to kick in now thank goodness.
    Love Auntie Ren X

  6. Hi Kate,

Just to keep you updated on my bet - Ruby Walsh has fallen in last race and hurt his arm so it does not look like he will be able to ride. I only backed Big Fella Thanks because he was riding it. Because it was the favourite I took the price and now the odds are getting longer.

I can only win £10 now!!!

Lots and lots of love, Mum, Dad and VEG xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Hi Kiki,
Sounds like an interesting E phase but I'm sure you'll be making the most of whatever you're doing and I know you'll love working with the villagers. It's a shame that you've had to move away from that lovely beach but it's yet another once in a lifetime you'll be sharing with your new friends. Spotted you in the 2 photos and you're smiling in both so you must be ok!
Lovely weather here for a change. Dad is still working on his new project and has just used one of his favourite words, involving "bug" although he's not swatting flies! Things not going well. Three swear words in the space of a minute. I think he must be missing not being able to nag you about the lights always being left on, the laptop perched where it shouldn't be, the shower being on for too long, so now he swears at doors instead. This is what life has come to.
Well I'm looking forward to seeing more photos soon - the write-up implied you moved this week but not sure how long you'll be at Kottakkadavu. Until next weekend? With 30 of you I'm sure you'll achieve great things.
No news from A so assume no news is good news. Hope you're managing to get my blogs, letters & parcels. Will post one last letter next week as I reckon it probably takes a couple of weeks to reach you. Would be great to hear from you to confirm your plans. Enjoy the rest of your time there & no doubt you're looking forward to the Trek! Love & hugs, Mxxxx

  8. Message for Raleigh Team:

Just want to say thank you for keeping us in the loop. Had a feeling this week that something was not quite right - maternal instincts coming to the fore! The venturers' safety is paramount as is the reputation of the Raleigh safety record and I'm sure the venturers will gain much from being with this small community. The change in circumstances will seem like a blessing to the villagers.
Once again, thanks for all the photos and updates - it means so much to us here.

Nice to see more photos of you and glad to see you sitting in the shade. A mid project change makes it even more exciting and gave you a chance to recharge your batteries. Weather lovely in Guernsey, your Dad has been busy pressure hosing the drive and patio.I'm not too happy though because he just massacred my lovely plant !! you remember what he did to the trees last year much of the same I'm afraid. Keeping Granny posted with all the news from the blog. I too watched the programme on the Nilgiri Hill Railway the countryside looked absolutely beautiful.I worry slightly that I've added another day to your travels and I hope to hear from you. We're all looking forward to seeing you and hearing all about your amazing experiences.Keep enjoying this very special time. Love Mummy xxxx

    Darling girl,

Hope you are fit and well and not too blistered and that the project is going well. I think about you lots and grandma and I have been talking about you this week and wondering how you are.

The garden transformation is well underway. I may have lost several pounds in weight due to many hours a day of hard labour but feel much fitter and the garden looks great. Grandma is going home tomorrow so I can lie down for the next few days and recover.
You need to text me when you are back at base so I can let you know about a couple of admin things : nothing urgent just your Orange phone bill and student Finance form. Nothing to worry about just stuff we can sort via text and email.
Love you everso much, always, hope the letters are getting through. Work hard darling and enjoy yourself too, hugs and kisses from mum xxx

  12. For Duncan Sanders;
Hello babe (: I hope you're doing well, shame about having to move around but I'm sure you'll still be having an amazing time. I really miss you, the italy trip just made me think of you so much as I kept thinking 'this time last year' thing. Like the day I met you and the balcony night (:

I just got back from Venice, it was such a good trip. Although it just couldn't beat last year, it was still so so good. We did so much each day, as you know JG keeps a tight schedule. We did have a lot more free time this year though, just chilling around Venice was so nice! I even managed to get a little tan going on (: It was so beautiful and different from anything I've ever seen! Because of how much water there is there everything was done on boats. We saw buses, taxi's, ice cream vans, police, ambulance, postmen, deliveries..but they were all on boats. It was strange! We also went to Juliet's house which was nice. There is this wall where people leave little love notes for their loved ones. Some of the things are so cute (: I left a little one myself, so you're now on a wall in Venice. We should go there some time to see if its still there! I'll show you pictures when you're home (:

I cant wait to here from you lovely, I'm looking forward to getting your letter. I hope you've got mine now..I want you to be able to read them (: Its only 4 weeks until I get to see you again (: I literally cant wait to be able to hold you! I miss you so so much, and I think about you all the time. Keep safe babe, and have an amazing time. I see your hair is getting long again, it still looks lovely (: I miss you.

I love you with all my heart

  17. For Tom Saville,

    Hi Tom,

Saw the changes for Echo, hope it all worked out well and you are having a great time.

Got back from St Gilles yesterday. All good with challenges on the way as usual. Steve F didn't fill up with fuel so we had to stop off in Guernsey after using most of it to get across Biscay. Weather was great no rain, no fog. Bombadier Jones was at full stretch making egg banjoes and he missed finding your clothes all over the boat! The running joke as the Catholic crisis gets worse over here, was 'buoy' jokes - 'be sure to familiarise yourself with the buoys before you leave'; that's a cardinal's buoy'.

A tragic story yesterday was that the Polish President, his wife and senior military leaders and advisers were all killed in a plane crash on their way to Russia to commemorate the 20,000 Poles murdered by the Russians in WWII. Poland is in shock.

Mum and I off to La Rochelle this week.

    Take care Dad

  18. Hi Geoff Wells,

We've just had the first decent sunny weekend since you left, mum came down to our house this weekend and we went looking at our potential new house (I'll write to you this week with the details). Meanwhile election fever has hit and everyone is sick of all the political WAGS already. I'll write to you this week with all the other gossip.

  19. Thank you, Raleigh, for keeping us so well informed and supporting the change of location.

Kevvy W, you've probably realised from the other comments that the weather is warm here! Can't believe the difference! Snow still scatters the hills, though. Noticed on the weather forecast that Mysore district is in for a few days of rain - welcome relief for you folks, I s'pect.
Dad and I had an interesting trip to Loch Tay on Friday. We visited the Crannog near Aberfeldy. An amazing building (Iron Age Hoose!), I could manage grinding wheat but fire making was just too tricky - guess I'll stick to gathering and spinning!
Spent time with Helly last week. Team Thomson are grand and full of jolly banter. They were playing tennis this afternoon. Helen tells me she's found an unique place to keep the tennis balls. I can only wonder!!
You look hail and hearty and your smiles make my day - the beard suits you - hmmm, essence of BW there!
Hope my mail is reaching you. Thinking about you lots and sending you all our love, Mum and Dad xxx

    Hi Kiki,
Put 2 messages on yesterday but neither have shown up today so they must be floating around on the ethernet somewhere!
Sorry to hear that your stay at the Park had to be cut short. I expect you're all very disappointed to leave a project that you've not been able to complete properly but it seems that the Raleigh Team had little choice. The project you're now on seems just as fulfilling and I'm sure the villagers must be delighted to have you all there to build the fencing around their village.
All well here. Dad very busy with his latest project although the air has been blue as things have not gone to plan. Never mind, he has something else to moan about in your absence, as your room is tidy, lights are never left on and the shower pump has been having a long rest! However potholes are running very high on his nuisance agenda at the moment and he is working up to writing a letter to the council. (I hear this every day!).
I guess you might be back at FieldBase next weekend so it would be good if you could confirm when you plan to return. You mentioned staying on for a fortnight which cd mean you're back the week A Pat is coming to stay. Anyway, hope you're still having an awesome time. Big hugs and lots of love, Mxxxx

    Hi Julie,

Hope you are well. We were sorry to hear that the two Echo groups had to move from the forest camps, but hope you are all now settled into the new location and still having a good time.

The weather has been marvellous here this weekend. We were up at Mindrum yesterday doing some gardening and this morning we had a lovely walk with Auntie Margaret and the 3 dogs down to their favourite beach beside the Lighthouse. Bonny is still keeping o.k. - she had a check up at the Vets on Friday. We take her down to Tynemouth beach most evenings after tea, weather permitting.

Hoping to hear some more news from Echo 4 soon or at the weekend before you set off on your trek.

Take care. With love from us all.

  24. Hi Alistair

I have just found your spare pair of glasses... no mean feat. They were in the car, buried under many examples of interesting rubbish. I need to know if it's still worth sending them - still think you're better off getting some there, frankly.

Much sympathy - it must be infuriating for you. When I lost my specs it was like half of me shut down; just didn't feel like I was part of the world. Stay strong, old chap.

Spurs just got knocked out of the FA cup, by Portsmouth. I know that's no big deal to you but you can imagine the atmosphere at home... I'm keeping my head down.

Just did our last (www.rtwso.org for anyone interested!) concert of the season - the mayor came along with his entourage and did a little speech - fine playing, great music, proud of you etc etc but we're still going to tear down your concert hall. Makes you proud to be Kentish!

Fish still fine but pump is a goner. Guitars are in great nick - both send their regards, as do your vast and growing band of wellwishing friends and relatives. Lots of love - Dad x

  25. Hi Ruth
Sounds like interesting times for you with a change mid term. hope all going well. Sarah coming home at the beginning of May for a couple of months then going back to Rio to study Portuguese at the university - that's her latest plan anyway. Katherine and Rich still staying here but they should be back in their own house in a few days now. went to Sam's (Richard and Amy) christening today in St Stephens - it was odd - i haven't been in there since Nandy's funeral. Grandad's urn still in the front porch with a photo of him which is nice. anyway lovely christening - Uncle Tim back from SriLanka for a few weeks while he gets his security clearance to go up to Jafna for 6 months. he is going back on Thursday. Liz is now home for good and back in the house in Dunsford Place.
Weather much more spring like now with the dafs all out and looking lovely. We have just planted the jersey Royal potatoes that we brought back from Jersey when we visited Granny and Grandpa. Yum - can't wait to harvest them!!
Looking forward to hearing more of your news whenever you can.

It was good to see your photo on the latest blog. Sorry to hear about your enforced move. The blog from Raleigh India made no mention at all of what
will happen to the people of the village now that Echo 4 have had to move out, presumably with your work unfinished. Picked Dads car up at St Gilles and saw where you guys were. So lucky to be able to get here as there has been a volcanic eruption in Iceland and volcanic dust spreading all across northern europe! Uk and many other european countries have closed all air space until further notice as it is so dangerous to fly-luckily we had a v early flight and so ok. Ferry back. Guy and Fudge well-Guy got big new job so is burning the midnight oil-saw him Wednesday-very smart!

Good news-Will has got new job in Monaco! How fab-we all have open invitation and Fi will be able to work there too.

Ongelooflijk!

  37. Dear Chiara Raine,

I have given up trying to figure out which group you are so hope you get this, hope you've been getting my letters as I have been sending small surprises in some of them to make you laugh. My dad suggested we post a sandwich bar in case you were fed up with the curry but I did not think that necessary. I can't keep up with all this exciting moving of places so you will just have to give me a mega update on youre return.

No big news from me, got exams in June and one more week of college left then three weeks revision so just enjoy being free and in India! I am getting along well with the family, although had a few fallouts with Pascal for reasons that I will not grave the blog with, but alls ok and he is taking me to the cinema tomorrow so we can spend quality sister brother time together. O we are being attacked by ants in Henley but nothing probably compared to the bugs you are dealing with so can't complain. I have another letter to post and then perhaps no more as I guess they take a few weeks to arrive and if I send any later you may be gone.

Can't wait to hear your tales. Nothing much to report from my mind, looking forward to your return and whatever present you may have got me-no I'm only joking I am not that demanding- but also wishing it would last longer for you try not to go all gooey when you leave!

    bisous, anais shenton
