Echo 5 and the Elephants

An account of the first few days at Echo 5 has kindly been provided by Rosie Mellor.

Despite an enthusiastic start, filled with excited trepidation, we left field base 30 minutes late. With the case of the missing tentpoles solved and backpacks lining the inside of the bus we finally set off. With friendly banter filling the bus, we stopped for an early lunch at Amoor where we got to know each other further over Masala Dosas and chai. Conversations focused on the amazing adventures we had to come.

We arrived in Cowdelhi an hour later where we entertained ourselves by doing Raleigh Olympics - made up of skipping ropes, football and dodging the water pistol. Some local children joined in our fun and they loved the water pistol wriggling with delight as the water cooled their skin in the blistering heat.

That evening, camping at the Ranger's Station, we sat around for the first time as a group and found out our likes, dislikes and the reasons we decided to come on Raleigh.

"Sitting on the dusty ground,
We all begin to wonder
Who we are and why we're here
and what we hope to conquer."

We woke early the next morning to a combination of sounds - packs of dogs barking, groups of monkeys squealing and the local mosque doing the dawn call to prayer. Morale was high as we packed up the bus and set onwards towards our destination.

We arrived at our drop off point and unloaded our backpacks and group kit in the village next to the national park entrance. We were to walk 9km to our site with a tractor helping us with the largest items. So, with one walking boot in front of the other and running high on adrenaline we began. In the blistering 40 degree heat we took regular breaks. We have flavoured powder called Tang which takes the nasty chlorine taste away in the water . Tang's popularity within the group has risen as quickly as "Glee" back home and all breaks are now known as Tang-time!

2km from our camp the tractor loaded up with the group kit (barrels, bamboo poles, tents and food for three weeks etc) couldn't get down the almost vertical hill and we were stuck as to what to do. Could we physically carry so much or would we be destined to set up camp here for the night? Salvation came in the form of the Ranger in his jeep who took trips up and down the hill with our kit. Hoorah!

It was almost as if the mist rose and our headaches lifted and before us was the most beautiful of views. A sun drenched beach, golden sands, fresh flowing water and mountains enveloping us. It had all been worth it all the stress and physical aches just to be here and know that we will call this home for the next 3 weeks.

The environmental project we'll be working on for the next three weeks is based near Bandipur National Park on the border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In this first phase we'll be building a ranger's station in order to help them stop poachers in the park. There used to be a whole range of animals here - tigers, cheetahs, panthers but their numbers have diminished because of the poachers. It is really satisfying to know we'll be helping in such a positive and sustainable way by aiding rangers stop the illegal poaching of animals.

In order to build the station we need to transport sand and water up the steep hill where the station is to be built. For the last 4 days we've created a chain up to the top with each one of us walking a small part transporting the sand and water. Along the way, we've had a few adventures and it's only day 5! Earlier in the week we were called by the Ranger to witness a family of elephants drinking in the river. It was an amazing sight to see, 5 elephants including 2 baby ones and to know that we're helping to save them and their habitat.

Anna and I went to visit the Echo 5 group and from the first sight on our arrival it could be mistaken that we had been sent on a jolly as the location resembles the much envied shipwrecked beach although on further investigation you notice the steepness of the hill and the large mound of sand that sits at the top which the venturers have lost much sweat and time to.

On the day of our arrival the venturer's were excited ( it goes without saying I am sure that we contributed to most of this) however a small element of the fury also belonged to the arrival of the mason. The group were itching to get started with the building and put their hard work transporting the sand and water to good use.

The same sense of group spirit that we encountered at Echo 4 had manifested itself in Echo 5 and the group had all already established fun nicknames. Below we have Jay-Z and Pye Face hard at it!

and...........

The Lady and the Diva!

At camp site the group were eagerly reading your messages from the blog!

If Raleigh ever produce a calendar we have some potential entries below as testerone runs high with the men at work pose!

It is not all work, work, work though as lunchtime breaks, to escape the burn of the midday sun, and the end of the day finish with a communal swim in the river which is so refreshing if you can avoid the little nips of the fish swimming at your feet!

  2. Hello everyone – thanks to those that wrote, what’s going on to those who can’t work it out?!
It’s amazing out here, sandy beach, awesome river – we’ve seen elephants drinking from the river across from us, amazing!! And saw a shooting star last night! The stars here are incredible!!
Had sunstroke on the 1st day unfortunately, but I’m good now.
Dwane, good to hear from you!! Jane, stop obsessing over hats! Dad, thanks so much for writing that on the blog – glad it was anonymous so no one knows my name, haha!
Love to you all, keep writing

  3. Hello! Message from Lauren Pegg to all the family and any chums!
Having a great time in India! The locals are lovely and treat us like celebrities, gathering in crowds and taking photos of us, hilarious!
I’m looking more like a man everyday but hey! Miss you all lots but still happy!
Everyone I’ve met is lovely and are becoming like a family to me! In such a lovely area, so breathtaking and I’m so used to monkeys hanging around camp! Hope everything is good at home and it’s not too cold!
Thankyou for all your comments they brighten my day!
    Lots of love, Lauren x x x x

  4. A message to the Mellor family from Rosie.
Thanks dad for your message, great to hear from you and life as normal in Lancashire.
Don’t work too hard and remember to show Bella and Lulu who’s boss! I’m a third of the way through my first phase doing an environmental project next to the Calgury River. We’re building an anti-poaching camp on the top of the hill to protect the local wildlife – elephants and tigers. We even saw an elephant family a couple of days ago – so gorgeous!
We’re camping on the beach and we swim in the river every day, it’s an absolutely idyllic life but balanced by the grueling physical work of carrying sand and water up the almost vertical hill every day. A postcard and letter is in the post to you!
Miss you both so much and I’ll get in contact with you as much as possible!
    Love you,
    Rosie

Happy Birthday mum (Jo)! Have a great day. I would’ve sent something but postage is slow! Seen elephants on the other side of the river, as well as finding the perfect beach.
Just carrying rocks and sand to the foundations now, the mason arrived 6 days late!
Hope everything is all well at home

  9. Message for Rosie Mellor Echo Five, Dad calling. Hi Rosie, how are things going ?!!! Pretty wonderfully, it would seem. 7.15 on a Wednesday morning, been raining in the night, and I am about to set off for the office. I was up early, expecting to see a report from Echo Five, so I read your report at 6am. A very good piece of copy, I thought, and it seems like a lovely site. I take it that the camp you are building ( or should that be fort ) is on the top of a ridge overlooking your campsite. I would say watch out for scorpions when you are reaching down for rocks. Mum was so happy with the gift you left on Sunday, and as always, we think of you all the time. Take care. Love from Dad and Mum. Letters in the post already.xx xx

Lucy, Thanks for your message & birthday greetings to your mother. She found the Mother's Day card you left!

Echo 5 sounds like paradise .... until you read of y'all lugging sand and water up steep inclines in temps of 40C (that's just a tad warmer than here .. where the frosts seem to have finally gone and we've weak sunshine this week in deepest Somerset).

All's well here .. Charlie is curled up next to the Aga as ever (I joined him there during the extended cold snap!).

Take care and give those a crocodiles a hug from me!

  14. Hey Bella,
Have you got any of my letters? i've sent four, but the address is so crazy that I'm afraid they'll disintigrate from the humidity somewhere in the highly bureaucratised Bangalore post office before they reach you. I've already read two of yours. I miss you. Sleep more! I'm going to Stratford on Friday to see R+J; that's almost as tragic as you! Get it...Shakespeare...tragedy...nevermind.
I mah you. And I love you.

  16. Message for Lucy Travis from Sarah Travis

Lucy, your Echo 5 location sounds incredible and the blog photos look amazing. But labouring in that heat and up the vertical slope sound like a real challenge! Have you seen many scorpions? Have you got lots of memory card space for photos of the elephants?

The sun has finally come out this week and Emily and I were in the garden at the weekend. We've been building grow 2 your own vegetable beds but Emily has firmly decided to use one as a sandbox and I think there's going to be lots of sand and soil mixing and excavating going on.

Sending you lots of love from all the Oxford based Travi and looking forward to seeing your next blog update.

They obviously haven't heard you laugh yet!!! Keep up the good work, we miss you lots, are always thinking of you and keep on having a great time. Love Duckie and JJ xxxxx

    Hello Sweetheart,
Missing the news from your camp - it seems ages since we saw a photo - but expect you're well into your project now.
Have written another letter today so look out for it Behind the Olive Garden, Opposite the Police Horse Park. (Can't quite believe that's a real address!).
All well here. We had a phone call from the Boy on Mon night which cheered me up no end. He gets 30 mins every week but not sure what the facilities will be when he gets to LG. He couldn't tell us when he would be moving on for obvious reasons. His body had finally given in to all the partying before he left and he had a really nasty cold and feeling rough (not much fun in that heat). It was lovely to hear his voice and it was so clear, difficult to believe you are both so far away.
Will try & blog again before we go skiing (early hours Sat am) & will be in touch again as soon as we get back.
The Rylance mafia all send their love - they've all been keeping an eye on the Raleigh site as has Uncle Arthur.
    Love you lots, Kiki, Mxxxx

  24. Hey Peggles,

Loving seeing you on here, it's nice to have new and exciting ways to stalk you. You look like you're having far too much fun, completely unacceptable, I'm jealous and want to do next years trip. Never mind, you are missing the joy of the High Easter races and the easter egg hunt for another year, so there is a little justice. Don't worry about turning into a man, I'll have a beard net waiting for you when you get home. (Honestly you look fine). Just don't forget to get corn rows. Miss you loads poppet, hope the elephants are reminding you of me...

Big love churros, stay sweet xx

its finally got warm here so enjoying my walks around paris even more! lessons are fine, nothing special... a bit too much grammar but the lectures that i take on cinema, history of art and french society are a lot more interesting. My rents came to visit this weekend which was lovely. they treated me to meals out and shopping : ) We also had a meal at leonards which was rather jokes. When my mum was asked how long she was going to Ireland in the summer for she replied " 10 years"!! and my bro is so talll. hahah sorry i'm rambling loads about really irrelevant stuff. We must be living such different lives at the moment! Miss you so much, and as soon as you cannn - email me! :D

  50. Hi Kate, Hope you are well - everyone here is fine! Will let you know tomorrow if Ireland win the Triple Crown (they should easily beat Scotland!). I have managed to get Sandra and Sam to join the Tommy Bowe fan club! Still working on Kay but relationships with the Salvo are a bit strained again! Will explain it all in the next letter - Gabe wants to do triple science - will tell you all about it! Had parents evening last night and it was quite positive (apart from the science teachers attitude). Lots and lots of love Mum, Dad and VEG XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

To Lauren "The Lady" Pegg. Hey stinker, your father here.
Just read all the above comments about how everybody is missing everyone. Still not missing you and have saved £20 in toilet paper so far.
Keep those elephants safe won't you. I read above that as well as tigers and panthers there were cheetahs in the area. How is that? They are not indigenous to the sub-continent. This trip is obviously a sham. You're an absolute shower!
I will not tell you to be careful and to enjoy yourself and work hard because the pictures tell G & I that very well.
Carpe diem my dear, carpe diem.
Mac says woof on a lower note.
I am into my third week at work and they have not sussed me out yet so getting away with it.
When you respond to everyone, please divulge the reason for the soubriquet "The Lady".
We are all interested to learn of its origin.
Were they drunk or on some ancient potion handed down over the centuries from the Himalayan foothills?
Got to go now as your mothers diaper needs changing. Her bladder is not what it used to be and the living room smells of wee a lot these days.
Sports Relief eas on TV yesterday. They raised nearly £30 million on the night with more to come.
Some of this money will go to helping the children of India who are orphans etc. There are a few.
Speak soon tink and take lots of pics when you can.

Sorry for being so rubbish - things here have been horrible! I'm having mental breakdowns on a daily basis! School is rubbish and sooo stressful, and I've had the vomiting bug this week. I wish I was there with you!!

Are you still having an amazing time? Did you have a good St.Patrick's day? I see that you've made friends with the elephants! I am tres jealous!

Some of us are planning on going down to Brighton over the Easter holidays - wish you could be here for that.

I miss youuuuu!! Come back to me soon wifey, loveeeeeeeeee xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hope you are having an amazing time. I am very curious about the fact that your nickname is either Jay-Z or Pye Face. Not sure which one would be more amusing!! Looks beautiful, and glad they're putting you to such good work. Elephants and monkeys = cool.
Scorpions = not cool. I'm sure we can imagine how I'd have handled that situation.
You must be about to move on to your next place - good luck!!

  62. To Lauren Pegg, just ignore everything your dad has said about me!! ha ha he did tell me that he was going to write that so I will let him off...this time. Eleanor is not feeling very well at the moment but she is being very brave. Brehyr is still ruling the TV remote - she hides it in drawers now and under the settee, so I have had to give her a sharp warning to leave it on the table in future as no one can find it. I hurt my knee dancing like Louie Spence from the Pineapple Dance Studio, so now when David and I fenture out we look like a right odd couple limping around everywhere. Oh well, can't be helped. Are you looking forward to Easter or won't you be having that there? We have bought you an egg but as it won't keep I will eat it in your stead...at least the calories are yours! On the question of food, I hope you are eating enough. Keep having a great time. Miss you lots and lots and lots and lots, Duckie xxxxxxx

I seems amazing that you are coming towards the end of your first section of the trip. Things here in darkest Lincolnshire getting pretty exciting too. The whole County stunned by the news of an escaped pig from a farm near Horncastle. After hourly updates on Radio Lincs we were all relieved to hear of its capture in an allotment. Pretty amazing I know but otherwise little to report. Keep up the good work, plenty of jobs we can find for you at home to save you getting bored on your return.

  80. Hi Lauren (PEGG),

Daddy has just given me your letter; it was wonderful to read...I want more!!! Hopefully now you are back at fieldbase (or nearly), you will have received my letter though you'll probably not receive the parcel until the next round of swap-overs. Glad to see though that you are having a brill time, you certainly seem to be enjoying yourself in the photos. I've checked your bank a/c and Nomad have credited your account and your O2 bill paid so you have nothing to worry about. I'm just about to phone Janice and Rebs and read your letter out to them - they are just as eager for news as I am. Thank goodness for this blog. Sarah and Nicola have been fretting about the fact that you'll be missing the next Andrew Lloyd Webber/BBC collaboration - Dorothy from Yellow Brick Road - and reminiscing about Liza M's appearance on the Nancy one...obviously you all found it hilarious and riveting at the same time.
Missing you so much - Rebs has taken on your mantle and phones me all the time now! Talking of which, how has life been without all the technology at your fingertips? What? No phone!!
    Write again, love Duckie xxxxxx
