In the rainwater tank
Two of the local school children
The nearby reservoir has also become a refuge for the group to escape the midday heat and offers the opportunity to relax after a hard days’ grind on the project site as we can swim, listen to music, read and reflect upon our efforts to date. However, we are not alone in our tranquil sanctuary; we were lucky enough to see a herd of over 20 elephants emerge from the forest to bathe and quench their thirst in the reservoir...it seems we have more in common than we thought when it comes to relaxing!
The progress we have made on the project site is testament to the effort we put in to making this a successful phase on Raleigh 10C, but Charlie 3 fall very firmly into the ‘work hard, play hard’ mould. The group have entertained themselves with games of fives (a kind of handball/squash type game for two players), badminton and volleyball with the locals joining in the fun on occasion, and even putting on a sports day. Our team are also in fine physical condition with various exercise regimes appearing as part of the daily routine; early morning runs, skipping and break-bar lifting form the macho schedule of our healthy habits, whilst yoga and meditation offer a more sedate route to wellbeing (we’ll let you decide how the team divide themselves between the different exercise modes...save to state that some fairly traditional expressions of gender are at play!).

The Wheelbarrow Race
The Three legged race
Picnic by the resevoir
The group have been lucky enough to have been on two excursions away from Huskur Hadi. The first to the nearby town of Saragur to buy vegetables for cooking; the second to a Tibetan Buddhist temple where we saw how the Monks lived and went about their lives according to Buddhist teachings.
Richard making Chai for the group
Tents in the school grounds
PM Dave
We also celebrated Hindi New Year on the 16th March in Charlie 3 fashion...cake and Chai! We made an Irish stew on the 17th using the vegetables we bought in Saragur and chickens from the village in honour of St Patricks’s day. We painted our faces green, played ‘Pin the Guinness on the Leprechaun’ using a cut out picture of a glass of Guinness, and had a treasure hunt for a pot of gold, with the gold being replaced by cake from the store.
The group at the school
The growing role of cake within Charlie 3 as a totemic symbol of ‘good times’ came to the fore once more as we announced our Team Player’ of the week prize, voted for by each member of the group. Jake, Sasi, Claire and Chiara all received nominations, but it was the tireless Hugo who received this weeks prize in recognition of his sterling efforts in the trenches and on the rainwater harvesting unit. PM Dave presented Hugo with two packets of cake which in the spirit of Charlie 3 and no less than we’d expect from Hugo, he shared with the team. The walk from the farmers field to the school
It is with a hue of sadness that we will leave our project site at Huskur Hadi and return to Field Base on the 26th for changeover to Phase 2. The project so far has been a great success on virtually all fronts and our experience has been enriched by the residents of the village in assisting them to construct sustainable infrastructure that will serve their needs for many years to come. Beyond the tangible, visual results we have achieved, we have expanded our horizons and developed invaluable leadership and team skills whilst on project Charlie 3 and at this point we must extend thanks to all who contributed to the progress of the project and our sustained enjoyment. From the local chef who has kept us well fed, to MYKAPS for facilitating this opportunity, and above all to Jo and Dave our volunteer Project Managers. Without their patience, judgement and understanding, our Phase 1 experience in India would have undoubtedly been less enjoyable, less productive, and less memorable.

Looking forward to hearing all about it when you get back. We are off to see Lisa, Geraldine & co , will be away for 3 weeks and looking forward to some sunshine although the scenery at the Hilton may be a bit different to India! Anjal tells us its very hot there so hope you are managing the heat OK. Her sister is moving back to London in May, not sure of the date so you may want to check if you are thinking of going there when Raleigh ends. Have you thought any more about if you are going travelling or coming home after Raleigh?
Did you recieve the air mail letters we sent. One was posted by Jan K when he was in India recently? We are sitting here in the study with your Mum (who is also typing) and she looks great (they told me to say that)

ReplyDeleteHi Sweetheart,
How excited was i to get your email and you sound as though you are having an amazing time even though it sounds like the trek has been extremely hard work but worth it.
I suspect you loved the children singing to you for your birthday, i told you it would be one to remember lol.
I am so proud of you and cant wait to tell everyone what you have been up to.As for crawly things i will rely on you to catch any spiders in the conservatory on your return and dont talk to me about rats, i nearly passed out the other day when one poked its head through the garden fence i am certain it is living under the neighbours shed, so having one run across your face does not bear thinking about lol. I am so proud of you and will write another letter tonight now i know you have received 3 out of 4.

Hi Charles
ReplyDeleteLoved the photos, although think the black mud soap isn't working! It's strange how you don't seem to be working as hard as everyone else in the piccies, you are always smiling and looking incredibly relaxed. We hope to see some more industrious poses in the future.

Hope the next project goes well. I won the school championship in chess winning every single game (I'm also very modest!), and I took my grade 3 cornet exam yesterday.
Zak x
I beat Zak really easily in the chess (only joking). In English I've designed a pig washing and hair cutting machine; you might find it useful when you come back from India, assuming it's ready by then. We're really excited about going to Disneyland, Universal Studios, Warner etc and will write when we get back. Au revoir!

Dear Charles,
ReplyDeleteWe were so excited to see all the new photos on the blog and read with great interest about life in Charlie 3. It sounds really fun and there is obviously a good team spirit amongst you all. Loved seeing you competing in your sports day, especially the wheelbarrow racing!
There is not much news at home other than at this moment Spurs are beating Fulham in the F.A. Cup! (3-1) Played golf today although course was very muddy. Will write again soon. Love M and D xx
Hi Amy (Broughton),
ReplyDeleteIt upet me to see you looking forlorn in the photo where everyone is reading letters. I have sent three letters so far + a small package to see if it gets through.Dad and Grandma have also sent letters. Needless to say Josie and rory will rely on internet but they will be home this weekend so I will ensure they put pen to paper. Let me know if nothing is getting through.
I was in Gannets this morning and missed buying you some carrot cake!!
So glad you are having a good time. Try to check in via email when back at base camp re travel plans.
Love you to bits and missing you like mad. Dogs fine LOL Mum x x x

ReplyDeleteLoving these pictures of you :) ... (and your headband style has not gone unnoticed by me, of course!). 'Phase 1' sounds like its been a blissful start to your travels, can't wait for the next update!
I miss youuuu... been on easter hols for a week now, and have seen bristol people quite a lot (laura came down)and camilla, but noone else is back from uni and you are away.. thus, my mum is not too happy as im miserable (slightly familiar situation?!) To make things worst, im going on a geography trip tomorrow for 3 whole days, it will be horrendous, involving standing in rivers and the typical geography trip things.. its in exeter and forecast to rain alllll weekend, and i dont even have waterproof trousers, and my wellies are a size too small!! oh dear, i need to get over it and on with it.
As for revision, ...i won't even go there!
Anyway, i'll message again when i get back!
You look great in your photos and i miss you loadssss. Enjoy phase 2!
Love you

ReplyDeleteHi Charles,
I loved seeing all the photos of your time on Charlie 3 and it looks like you are enjoying yourself. We are very impressed with your digging, building and wheelbarrow racing! M and D were wondering if you would mind rebuilding one of the walls in Suffolk when you get back!
I have had quite a busy week at work. We have our last hockey game of the season tomorrow. It is against the leaders in the league so I have a feeling it might not go so well! I think the aim will be to avoid losing by double figures. Apparently we lost 16-0 when we played them at home.
Am looking forward to seeing new photos and finding out where you are going next.
Love,
