Allocations

Raleigh India 10 C

It is the most exciting time here at field base as the groups are allocated their projects. Each venturer is marked with a coloured bindi but they are not told the significance of the colour and they are told to find people with the same coloured bindi as them. Realisation kicks in that the people stood next to them are quite likely to be their friends for life or at the very least their group members for the next nineteen days.

Excitement mounts as to which colour represents which project. The Project Managers are one by one given their colours and gasps of excitement are heard as people discover where they are going for their first project. There are a few sighs of exasperation especially as venturers find out that they are trekking but it is only mock fear and is in every case followed by a wide smile! 1. Hey Rich, Hope the boots are sufficiently broken in for the 200km trek, take plenty of photos. Dad has made contact from Haiti, and although he knew it was going to be difficult it is beyond his expectations and he is averaging only 5hours sleep a day, needless to say he doesn't think he will last until June. Keep healthy and happy, Mum

  2. Hi Kate,

I am so excited about your project! I thought things can only get better after the 'chicken episode' as I felt sure you were one of those that chose not to watch! It was great to see you in the photo but haven't seen you since and can't believe you've been reading all the time!!
Now you are going to an even more remote part I have overcome my inhibitions about the blog as you probably won't be able to e-mail until you get back to the base camp.

We miss you lots and its very quiet and a bit strange without you but at least the washing has gone down and your bedroom floor is clear! Laura went back to France yesterday.

Heaps of love Mum & Dad xx (who has just gone to the allotment before I could tell him this latest news)

Hi Sam - just discovered you can post messages on the blog - had to make do with poste restante in my day! We've been following the activities and poring over the photos to see if we can spot you. You're famously camera shy, so it's great to see you captured in a couple! Hope you're settling in OK; the Echo 4 project sounds fab - v exciting.

Thanks for your email; have replied and sent a letter too. If you get a chance, resend your UCAS login, because it still won't give us access. Needless to say, we're all thinking of you and missing you lots.

Hope we get to see lots of pics along the way. It really looks amazing, dont forget to wear your hat to keep the sun off your head.

Hi Kiki! Looks like you'll be working very closely with the community, which you'll love, especially all those children. However, I'm sure digging lots of irrigation ditches is going to be really hard work in all that heat. Make sure you put plenty of suncream on and wear a hat!
All ok here. Antony's flight to Afghan is now on Wed at 10pm. Lots of tears shed when he left. I try not to think about you both being away at the same time but it helps that I can see photos of you and I have some idea of what you're doing. We are all very proud of you. Mxxx

They don't bark so I have given up trying, so got more treats. Mind you their poohs are prety big and tasty. I hear you are helping to sort out some elephants. Sounds fantastic, glad you in a good pack too. Mind you I am jealous of the poohs you must be seeing....? Look forward to seeing your pics. Hope your not scratching like me - still you get to take spray and tablets, I just get sticky drops on my neck. Well its off to the garden again for me so bark bark for now, Dog on the Blog.....

  61. Hee Pienske,

Love you for life xxxxx

Anyway everyone is cool, Crump quit his job but he's happy about it. The boys all say 'Safe'!

Charles - We have been most interested to read the blog and have been fascinated to see the photos. We do hope that you are enjoying yourself and not finding the heat too much.
Today at long last spring has arrived. There is sunshine and the temperature is around 13. Last night we saw a concert performance of The Mikado
at the Festival Hall. It was extremely good. In the morning we went to Kenwood for an excellent lecture on Van Gogh. The main news that will interest you is that yesterday Beckham ruptured his Achilles tendon. It seems unlikely that he will be able to play in The World Cup.

    We both send our love

D-Bear, JUST HEARD ABOUT YOUR CARDIFF OFFER! (via some very skilled blog-stalking by yours truly...) WHEEEEEY, congrats and all that jazz :D Really happy for you, are you going to take it? Would mean you're nice and close by :) Hope everything's fine and dandy with you, I miss you sleeping on my floor haha. Can't wait to see your face during Easter...shame it's cut rather short by my oh-so-exciting surveying field trip to some desolate National Trust centre in Wales. The joy -_-.

All is well here in Bristol. Lots of work (damn you Colin Taylor for setting an exam on the last day of term!) and I have become a bit of a social recluse as a result. Bad times. On the plus side, provisional exam timetable says I finish on the 4th of June which is amazing. Especially as the last exam is Fluid Mechanics which I quite like...also gives me two weeks to have fun before we have to move out of halls woop woop!

Life is good in general, Chris says hi (well, I'm pretty sure he does, he's in rehearsals at the moment - lead role in Little Shop of Horrors :D ) and I shall make Ricky and whoever else I encounter give you an update through this. I'm going to stop now though for fear that my post will become too long.

    Take care of yourself Admiral.

Looks like you finish on the beach which will be a good feeling. All good here but miss you lots. Beckham out of World Cup, BA on strike and Argies trying to get Falklands back. 86. For Tom,

Are you there yet? Must be getting close. Guess you will have been in places seen by few Indians, let alone foreigners. All the posts are inbound, guess you guys are too tired to get messages out at the food drops - what do they bring in? Hamburgers and fries? Mars bars? Sailor Jerry rum? Doritos?

Getting close to BIG 60 day and then head off to St Gilles to pick up the boat - wish you were coming. We could sail in September before you head off to Exeter.

We are heading to bach tomorrow - hope F does not try chasing swans out to sea again, I ain't going in after him. Saw some tired Cranleigh x country runners today = they were SLOW!

    Take care,

    Dad

  88. To Tom,

Sitting in a wet and windy Studland wishing Spring would arrive and thinking about you. Guy off to see Nick in Devon this weekend and work going well for him. Hope to get on with windows at your flat soon.

Everything warming up here for the election - it will be a crazy few weeks and it is far from clear who will win. Catholic church in big trouble in Austria and Germany over abuse of kids by priests (possibly including Pope and his brother). Big bust up in Israel - Biden was visiting and got a slap in the face as the Israelis announced they were starting to build more houses in East Jerusalem. US/Israeli relations at worst in 40 years.

Fulham beat Juventus and Chelsea lost to Inter Milan (Mourinho couldn't stop smiling!). England played 'Tryless, Clueless and Mindless' rugby to draw with Scotland. Tomorrow it's France.

All plans in place to pick boat up after Easter, hope the weather is kind to us. Hope we can get a sail in before you go up to Exeter. Headlines here say 50,000 may not get Uni places when they apply this year even with good grades, big tick for deferred place. Have got your student loan offer but you need to sign - will have to work out a way when you have finished in India. No rush

Hope all going well as Tango 7 nears the end. More pics than SA?

    Love and miss you

    Take care, MDF

XXXXX love you!

    Dear Charles
We were so pleased to hear your news from the letter that you wrote home.We are delighted that so far all is going well.We posted a blog for you on the Allocations site on 15 March and Sophie has advised us to let you know as you may not look there. In future we will write to Charlie 3. Also two days ago we sent you a letter which we hope will reach you while you are at Fieldbase.
We have been watching some tennis from Indian Wells and sadly Andy Murray was knocked out in the quarter-final by Soderling who then lost to
Roddick in the semi-final. Ljubicic knocked out Nadal so the Final today will be between Roddick and Ljubicic. Ljubicic served 17 aces.
With best wishes for your next assignment,
    Much love
