Charlie 3 are straight off the blocks and have made a fantastic start to phase one

Today, Charlie 3 was visited by Sophie Cragg and Tom Blincoe aka  "Dr Tom"! I haven't had the opportunity of introducing Tom before. He is our field base medic this phase but he will be getting out there for phases 2 and 3 as a project manager. After leaving Raleigh he will be going to work as a doctor in New Zealand. So far amongst the many things I have learnt about Tom are that he plays the guitar, he makes his own bacon, he cooks awesome food and he also works as a trustee for an HIV/Aids charity in Tanzania. We also have Tom to thank for the photographs used in today's blog. Oh and yes I forgot to mention he is also a great photographer.

                                                  Dr Tom

So what is the latest at Charlie3?

Group Photo of Charlie 3
(  L to R  Back Row:Jo Ryan, Dave Reynolds, Christina Sales, Claire Taylor, Amy Broughton, Julie Edgell
Front Row: Jake Hansen, Henry Britton, Richard, Chiara Raine, Hugo Goodale, Sasi, Jo Duckett Charles Salmon) Annie Raff was not featured in this particular photo as she was on this occassion feeling unwell - but rest assured she is now fine and is back on her feet and working hard!

It is good to see that the Project Managers are leading by example and Jo and Dave are really getting stuck in!

Beds for the night

Henry Britton one of the venturers working on the Charlie 3 project has provided us with a written update which helps transport us to the village. So thanks also go to Henry for this blog entry.

Staying in a remote rural village encircled by vast crop growing fields and with a stunning lake nearby, life for Charlie 3 on their sustainable agriculture project phase 1 has started smoothly with the tasks beginning promisingly and a good spirit developing within the group. Local chefs Timpathi and Chandra have eased the integration process by serving up a series of delicious meals which have been well delivered. Indian staples feature prominently alongside more international vegetables such as (skinless) cucumber and sweetcorn. This has left the team well nourished and brimful of energy for the various projects. Continuing on the food front, "cake break" in the afternoon shade has also been a popular part of the routine with packets devoured during periods of well earned respite.

                                     Meal times in the community

With the "digging heavy" emphasis of the projects, physical exertion has been very much to the fore, taxing conditions and baking heat mean that the groups fitness has been placed under the microscope and a particular onus has been put on co-operation and team work.

Charlie 3 working as a team and "digging heavy"

Local expertise in the core labour disciplines of pick axing, shovelling and loosening soil has been put to good use with the groups technical prowess at these skills coming along nicely despite some early teething difficulties.

Foundations for the rain water harvesting have been dug at the school

"Off the pitch" enthusiam has filled the air, with card games by the bucketload, french cricket and volleyball in the evening providing an intriguing sub plot to the wider narrative of the group's activity. Unfortunately, it is with regret that I must report at this stage Chiara's ever widening lead with her greater experience proving decisive at critical moments on more than one occasion. Richard our exuberant native presence has also provided many a light hearted moment with his executive wake up calls and Celine Dion infatuation providing a most appreciated form of additional entertainment (read heartfelt renditions of the Titanic theme tune during trench digging sessions).

A special mention here must also go to Mr Narayana Setty our MYKAPS representative and host whose wisedom and kindness have played no small part in making the group feel welcome in the community.

Julie Egdell one of the venturers from Charlie 3 has kindly written a poem about India. She has dedicated this poem to Alex but she has kindly agreed to share it with us all! For me it sums up India perfectly.

India is laughter, chatter, horns beeping,
bells on ankles, singing and drumming from distant fields, prayer.

India is spice, ginger, saffron, chilli, garlic.

India is incense, jasmine, cinnamon,
the smell of earth baking in the sun.

India is gariesh, rarna, temples, 1001 steps,
bindis, saris, coloured paint and sparkle.

India is traffic, ox drawn carts,
monkeys eating ice cream,
snakes, tigers, elephants, cows on the motorway.

In India the moon glows as orange as the dust
but these are the same stars every night,
I look for Orion and travel back to you.

Loving all the info, photos and write-ups. Dad and I have been reading and re-reading what you've been up to. Sounds like you're making your presence felt, even if it is winning all the games! You look a natural with your pickaxe - must be something to do with all the logs you've chopped for Dad! Uncle Arthur has been checking out the site too and 2mo Nanna is coming to stay so I shall show her the site and how easy it is to leave a msg. Antony has called a couple of times today; now leaving Catterick tomorrow at 11pm for a flight from Teeside. Have put his address in a letter which you should get when you return to FB. Keep smiling - photos are all good!xxxx

  7. Hi Amy
You look like you are working hard, about time after all those years of indolence. I hope the gloves are holding out. Are you getting plenty of tea breaks? What does it taste like? Have you finished W&P yet? Usual routine of NHS Slavery here. Obviously thinking of you all the time. Had last weekend bag carrying in London with Mum and Josie. I am getting to look more like Gok Wan every day.Found myself a nice sun dress for the summer, go nicely with sandals. We visited Portobello Road. You would love it, loads of vintage stuff. We will go back when you are home.
Love you to zillions of bits

Hope you're staying out of the sun... especially as every photo I see of you, you don't seem to have a hat on!! Nanna is here now and sends her love. She has been looking at all the photos & reading about what you're doing.
Antony phoned a short while ago, his last call before he goes as he's not allowed to take his mobile with him. His last words were for you, asking us to tell you that he was thinking of you and hoped you were enjoying it all. He'll see you during his R&R which will hopefully be not long after you get back. We all send love & kisses. xxxx

Thanks so much for all the info about what you are doing, and seeing you on the photos was great - it makes it much easier for us here to picture how you are living and what you are doing. It looks hard work but also sounds as if there is lots of fun in the course of a day and the food sounds delicious.

Not much news here but it is still really cold so we are also envious of your heat!

Looking forward to the next installment and by the way Julie, we also loved the poem,

bet your having an amazing time. Can't believe your so far away, I had a really good week in Cambridge with Michele. Played loads of tennis, table tennis and pool. Went into London a few times as well. Back home this week, doing work experience, so far so good, seen some amazing houses. Still haven't decided what to do next, so may be up for traveling with you at some stage. Mum's gone to Ireland for Grannies Birthday, so having to eat Dads cooking! Michele is home next week so not to bad. Played Hockey tonight which was fun, and I've got a game this weekend.

Forgot to tell you we went to a brilliant gallery in Chichester last week-modern art but not too esoteric and we had the place to ourselves .You'd have loved it.

Hope things are going well for you and that you're feeling good.

Message from your loving siblings. England - Scotland 15 all. Spurs beat Blackburn 3-1. Aston Villa drew 0-0 with stoke. And Joshua got thrashed in his rugby message today 35-0 but daddy won his golf....

I am now 20, have officially finished my second term and first year exams ( managing to make the extremely rookie error of not turning over the exam paper to look at the questions on the back....!) and have now got 6 weeks of absolutely zero work and am setting off for Morocco on Saturday. And inspired hitching tips - banners? ways of getting attention? - would be much appreciated.

Loving the unnecessarily flambouyant writing style by the way. J says to let you know that he is well and practising his cricket and Daddy says don't forget that its Mothers Day on Sunday.

I hope that you are sill surviving - bored of the food yet?! We are having steak for supper -yum.

Lots of love from this end, send me a message before i head off on Saturday as probably won't have much internet access - think we're going to be tenting it.

    Dear Annie R,
It's Genevieve and Rosie here! We just looked through all the pictures but alas you're not in any... Next time we expect a few snaps please! :)
Bristol update: -Oxbridge did Bristol 2010
    - Controversially attended Bunker, not Panache this week!
    - Had cod with grapes and cream sauce for dinner... mmmmm....
    - Rosie has been writing essay's at lightning speed! One was on Bristol's changing economic geography and the other how multiculturalism is reforming national identity. What are your thoughts?
    - Genevieve is being told the tales of Rodin's 'Ballet Girl, Aged Fourteen' by the author Ruth Parkins. Enlightening. Which brings me onto my next topic..... The Enlightenment c.19th century. I'll elaborate in our next message.
    - Preparing for our return home, we hear London is dead, looking forward to roast chickens and kneidleach. Jealousy not intended. After all we see you've got a pretty cool new raleigh t-shirt, so if you think about it like that, we're the ones who should be jealous really?!
    - HOT GOSS: We're famous, world renowned, can't walk down street without being accosted anymore....... all because of receiving a weekly BURST RADIO SHOUT OUT!! It's just beginning to be too much.... The Dopplegang Bang are just TOO HOT right now. DING DONG, HOT BOD, NICE TOOSH, CRINGE FACTOR...... (what was that annie????) 9.7!!!!!

We hope all is going well in India and we're missing you loads!! If we didn;t have each other I don't know what we would do! For me I guess Rosie's hair will have to make do as my reminder of you. For Rosie, driving past your house en route to mine is all she can cling onto.
    Love you so much,

Hopefully you can increase your cardio during your time there, because as you know the bounce isn't so good on the Coolhurst grass courts. I'm going to Italy tomorrow for a spa/ski week so I'll post a comment again after that. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more pictures.

How are you finding the culture changes, and have you encountered the infamous deli bell yet?! 39. To Lord Salmon of Sandwich (Charles Salmon),

Myself and Gav are sitting here watching MOTD . . . Villa are struggling to overcome Wolves at home and this was preceded by yet another shameful Arsene Wenger rant at the referee . . . moving on from football (and Chelsea's champions league exit in particular), we hope you are having a great time and not suffering too much from the lack of meat . . . if it makes you feel any better, I enjoyed a teriyaki steak the other night and have just devoured an entire KFC bargain bucket. I'm sure you have made good friends and as Charlie said, spent every minute of every day noting down the cultural shifts. . .

I'm presuming you cannot respond to these messages, so I won't spend too much time throwing questions at you . . . I will instead give you a full run-down on the goings on here . . . as much as I'd like to say Fabregas is out for the rest of the season and we are now in a heat-wave, this is far from true. . . the weather is miserable and and Arsenal are looking set for grabbing their much desired 3rd place Premier League spot. Gouldy (who I'm sure will end up seeing this) was awarded 3 points to his driving license the other day for reckless speeding and boarding his vehicle whilst severely hung over. Spurs (unfortunately) overcame Stoke at the Britannia Stadium and I have re-joined Virgin Active for the Easter Break, looking to become Judaism's most successful bodybuilder.

Well Phileas Fogg, we look forward to hearing all about your travels when you return from India.

    Much Love,
    Ollie and Gav xx

Thank you so much for your letter. We loved reading it and hearing all your news. Mummy was soooo excited and has read it to almost everyone we know! Honestly!

You would not believe it but checking your blog has almost become the new Facebook, and one of your Raleigh pictures is my laptop background. I showed pictures to Emma R and Holly at uni, Emma said a lot of people in her halls had done Raleigh!!!!!

I am now home for Easter holidays. Last night we went with Barbar to see Oliver The Musical, it was amazing. Emma and I are off to Gemma's event tonight.

It is so strange without you; we all miss you a lot! Don't worry, you are not missing out, I have a fantastic eight weeks ahead revising for Finals, cannot wait (for them to end, early June)!!!

    Dear Charles
We were so pleased to hear your news from the letter that you wrote home.We are delighted that so far all is going well.We posted a blog for you on the Allocations site on 15 March and Sophie has advised us to let you know as you may not look there. In future we will write to Charlie 3. Also two days ago we sent you a letter which we hope will reach you while you are at Fieldbase.

We have been watching some tennis from Indian Wells and sadly Andy Murray was knocked out in With best wishes for your next assignment, the quarter-final by Soderling who then lost to
