Welcome to the Official Blog for Raleigh India 12J September - December 2012.

Thursday 7 July 2011

We're off to visit the groups!

Before I let you know what all our groups have been up to I want to tell you all that we will be visiting all the groups from Friday to Monday in the loop vehicle. We are leaving field base tomorrow morning at 8:00am so if you want to get a blog message to someone make sure you post it today before 4pm UK time. Could you make sure that you clearly state the persons full name and their group (Charlie 1, Echo 3etc) as we have a few people with the same first names and I want to make sure I give the messages to the right people.

So the groups have been at their respective project sites for a few days now and they have all made great progress. Last night when the groups called through we scribbled down a few updates for you.

Charlie 1 is making amazing progress, they are sleeping in a classroom of one of the schools in Kotapadi so they didn’t have to much to do towards setting up camp. They have amazingly already finished the foundations for three toilets. The mason was going to be visiting the site today to teach everybody how to make concrete and the group were also planning to start working on the foundations of the house they will be building for a family in Kotapadi.

In Huskurhadi Echo 3 have set up their camp site which involved digging themselves a long drop toilet, getting their shower area ready and building their basha beds. Today they were going to be working on camp craft and making some more headway with the elephant trenches.

Our trekkers have been covering lots of ground and when we touched base with them this morning, Tango 5 had completed a 12K trek yesterday and were looking forward to some cycling today.  Tango 6 finished a 11K trek yesterday and were off for a day of rafting today.

The Foxtrots are well into their expeditions now having been out on site for nearly a week. Foxtrot 1 has finished the foundations of their toilet and they have now moved on to digging the cesspits. Tomorrow they have a treat planned and they are off to visit a local tea plantation. Foxtrot 2 is making progress on their elephant trenches but have a had some bad luck with the rain as it has ruined their long drop so when we spoke to them this morning they were in the process of digging another.

Here at field base we have been getting ready to visit are groups and taking them some tasty treats and all the blog messages we have received for them over the past week. When we get back there will be some great pictures of where they are and some more about what they have been up to.

Rachie enjoy the tea! (bring home Lapsang Souchoung for mum!) and good to see that you are following in the family tradition of civl engineering, with foundations and digging... Heavy rain here, but probably no worse than with you... We saw London Rd, the play about the Ipswich murders last night; collection on the door was for Iceni, so it must be still going.

  8. For Hayley Burnell /Foxtrot 1,

    Hi Comms,

Hope you're having an awesome time being back on phase. Still very jealous, placement is going really well at the moment, enjoying the whole 9 to 5 thing, got a lot of work to do while I'm here, proper full on at the moment. We get some really interesting people coming in, never a dull moment. Epic well done on the trek, very proud of you! Wish I could have done one like that. The three peaks challenge was really tough so glad we did it though, but I could not walk properly for all of last week, got a lot of stick in work even though it was my first week. Loved the pics on the blog before you set off, looks like you've got a really good group. Was out for drinks last night with the guys and they all say Hi and hope you're enjoying yourself. Got a great surprise when I got home from work last Friday to find a card waiting for me :) Absolutely loved the card babe! Could not have been more surprised, I sent a letter out to you a few days ago so hopefully you'll have it when you get back off phase. Hope all the work is going well :)
I'm off to do some exciting eLearning while you're enjoying yourself in India, like I said 'It's a trade off!'

Missing you quite a bit comms, hopefully speak to you soon that is if certain wildlife haven't made you forget about me! lol

    Love from

Sal, just a quicky to hit the blog deadline. My last day tomorrow - very scary and a bit sad. Hope you're doing well and glad to hear your foundations are done!! Hope no-one trying to fill it before you finish! Snailmail letter in post tomorrow I promise. Take Care. Peter

    Hi Chessie,

Your Mum says she's posted a blog today, but I don't know what she's written! Hope the trek is going well - it's great to see the news as it develops, and the photos look really exciting. Gearing up for the outdoor concert tonight - and the weather looks dodgy. Could be a very wet evening - still, at least that'll mean there will be fewer folk running round the site at 3 o'clock tomorrow morning at the start of Speech Day. My dad has had his 3 month check-up and has been passed fit to re-start driving, and drinking, but hopefully not both at the same time!
Take care - look forward to hearing from you when you can.
    Love, M x

Hello!! Just wanted to say I hope you are having a wonderful time – by the looks of the blog you are – I am getting kind of jealous actually. I know you are building elephant trenches – I hope you get to see some elephants while you are doing it they are amazing! Just happy you’re OK. Oh and by the way, you haven’t missed much in terms of the news. Apart from we have world peace now – and Al’Qaeda have publicly said that it was all just a joke, and declared that they are moving their efforts to more traditional stand up comedy. You can also look forward to having a girlfriend who isn’t permanently ill! I say that now, I’ll probably have cholera or something by the time you get this. Anyway, turned out I have amebiasis (is it killing you that you can’t wiki that?) – it is an amoeba-borne illness you get from contaminated food – but on my last day antibiotics now so fingers crossed! I hope you are not sick…. Anyway, I miss you, and I can’t wait to talk to you and hear about everything! Lots and lots of love, C

I can't tell you how proud I am of you. You're a real trooper! If I don't get a chance to blog you again then I wish you have a fantastic time on the rest of the expedition :)

    Hey baby bro,
Hope you are having an awesome time! I do not envy you, having to poo in a hole you dug yourself!! Saw a picture of your group on the blog, it's all very well looking in the wrong direction when the photo is being taken but it's rather noticeable when you are 2ft taller than everyone else in the photo!! Anyways, hope you are enjoying yourself and getting your hands dirty! Have fun with your elephant work (not quite sure what it is!!)

Miss you loads and loads, very proud of you.

Sorry we just missed the post! All ok here. Had our Sage trip yesterday - great music, but awful transport organisation by the Sage team. Got our play in the park afterwards between showers. V busy with school performances - exciting if it all works. Washing machine packed up today - we blame you and Vic - no worries though, it has already been repaired! Vic has a ticket for Aug 12th - all systems go! B Band in the Park on Sunday.Sorry to hear you have a lot of rain. Hope you are coping.

Hello my lovely! Hope the trek is going well! I bet it will be - wish I was walking with you!! It says on here that you're doing some rafting - for our rafting it basically just turned into floating/swimming down the river which was fun nonetheless! So many questions...I'll save'em for a letter I think. But are you staying at 'The Haunted House'?? That's where we stayed before the rafting day. Hope the guides are still as lovely as ever :) I've been meaning to send my second letter for ages - have you received the first yet? -(had it written for a week now) but I will put it in the post soon - sorry about that, it's dated 24th June! Just to let you know I'm thinking of you, anyway, and will write again soon! lots of love Lucy xxxx

Hello chalali..... so you've been gone two weeks now and we all miss you sooooooooooo much!

Went to Barmed last night and missed you, we danced to Beyonce because we are GIRLS we rule the World!! We returned to the Railway. We managed to get through 5 bottles of wine and a jug of cocktail between three of us. Went to Troy Boltons and had loads of chicken nuggets and then saw xavier and thought he was working for the taxi company so we asked him for a cab but that was embarrassing cus he didn't work there...he got in a cab and left....

We were gunna go to mass today but slept through.

Just watching the grand prix with Clark and Sammy and Vicki we want redbull hats and to go watch it one time, the men are hot in their onesie's. Prince Harry is there too. He also looks hot, we're going to marry Harry.

I went to hampton court last weekend without Vicki and Clark hahahahaha had a brilliant time got a new pencil and a new tea towel!

Me and Vicki saw your mum, she's missing u, I gave your dresses back, thank you for them and Vicki got her waterproof jacket, she's all set!!! Vicki says if u want her to bring anything....TOUGH!! Joking... let her know.

Clark has a new path in her back garden but it needs work. She also has a massive library fee, which is huge and she has to do a road runner.

Vicki hasn't been doing much, her mum wants us to move into her house. Oh and she has a new profile pic on facebook. So check that out when u get a chance.

    Maria's having a weekend in.

Catherine is studying for her exam, and bumping into vicki in Boots ocasionally.

Charlotte and Fiona went for a Nandos yesterday.
Both excited about Harry Potter movie. Charlotte is also seeing Derran Brown this week.

Laura J aka (new name) Loz... is on holiday with her mum.

Katie is going on holiday next week to Spain with some people.

Anna says next weekend she's definitely going to come out.

Nazia had another graduation please refer to her most recent facebook pic. Naz is still working in Boots not the same Boots Vicki and Catherine were in though.

Kayleigh will be back in west sussex next month.

Lisa's on holiday in Bulgaria,(apparently so is Tom Doyle) she had a bad dream about Sammy last night, but she's enjoying herself.

Clark saw Will on the train, he had some rollerblade fun with John Paul and Joe.

Nicola Pelham got her skate on last night, we think shes going to be on dancing on ice.

Stacey and Paddy are coming to visit next weekend, they are seeing The Lion King in London.

Marcella saw Take That in concert and got close up shots of Gary Barlow. She also went to Diseny Land. She will return to West Sussex soon.

Hugh Grant was on question time talking about phone hacking, it was like he was Prime Minister. The News of The World has been cancelled because of their bad reputation.

I bumped into James Hawksworth at Tesco he has a baby boy.

Sammy is resting on the sofa, tired from his walk.

    Codie's lost some weight.

Sophie got scared by Vicki and her heart beat sped up. She could also could do with a haircut.

This message has made us decided to do a West Sussex news letter every now and then because we clearly have so much going on. Perhaps we could replace The News of The World.

We have some pointers for you...

    1. you need to get in more photo's because the back of your head is not satisfying us!

    2. you need to respond to this message and give us all your news.

    3. we love you

    4. we miss you

Hope you are receiving our messages as I cant see them on here! Not sure why they would be disallowed! We think you have had a visit over the weekend from the leaders so hopefully they delivered some to you. Thanks for the postcard - glad all is going well. Cant imagine you digging toilets - perhaps you can do some digging here when you get back! Really pleased that you are enjoying it and hope the same goes for the trek at the end - maybe you will come upon some market stalls somewhere!

Gaye asked for your blog address so hopefully she will write to you, and also Jane rang to see if there was any news so you may hear from the Christies. Hannah sends her love and is leaving for her holiday tomorrow. Will now on his recruitment work experience and experiencing the shock of commuting.

I am off to WW shortly and hoping for good news! Slow but steady wins the race haha. Maybe I should go to India instead.

We miss you loads and wish we could hear more news of you or photos but mainly just hope you are having a fantastic time and look forward to seeing you in 2.5 weeks!!! It seems to be going quickly.

  35. Emma Williams 11E Tango 6 Trekking,

Hey Em! Hope the trek's going well and you're surviving with the wildlife, will have all phones on on the 21st and will try get to an internet cafe if you call and let me know first maybe? But I'll be on standby all day for you lol!
Dan and Miles arrived safe so will be away with them for a week down south whilst Mum heads to Malaysia for a long weekend with work, I head to BKK tonight overnight then Mum goes away tomorrow. All details in your letters but I guess you won't get any of them till you're back from the trek so plenty to catch up on :)

Rain and low 30C here so maybe same ish climate as what you're getting? Just that I'm sleeping in a double bed with air con so that's the only little difference :P Hope the food is yummy and you're cherishing the adventure, just mastered another Thai lecture for 3 hours, not much going on apart from preparing kit for my trip and had a browse for accommodation in September.

Finally got all our travel pics on FB took about 4 days with the dynamic KK internet speeds so that's been my key responsibility last week as well as going out for lunch and the gym every day :D
Bit of a crisis for Italy and Greece as the Euro's dropped and their having stock nightmares with deficits and debts reaching trillions whilst shares also plummeted in Asia, Obama is onto to it though with his latest pledge to solve the global economy as well as unemployment in the US. The news is a big channel in my daily routine nowadays.
Liverpool have signed Charlie Adam from Blackpool and United are on tour in America which I'm sure you'll be delighted about. Posh has had the Beckham's fourth child, they named the baby girl Harper Seven?! Yeah I know.

Anyway might be missing you somewhat weenie bits, have fun at the changeover and on to your next phase and hopefully speak to you soon in between :) Giant amounts of love, Andy x

Hi Rachie - it was wonderful to actually talk to you the other day! Hope it did not cost you too much, and we then received your one and only text! Only a few days and you will be home - can't believe it is nearly over but so pleased you have enjoyed it so much, it sounds amazing. All our 'babies' will soon be home - Hannah is back from Greece, Charlie comes home from France on Tuesday, Will back tomorrow and then YOU (Maisie is even having a bath in preparation!!). We can't wait to see you and hear all about the trek and everything. Hope you have taken lots of photos.

Our news - Dad has been going back and forth to Cambridge so you may see lots of him next term, Grandma is well but poor Auntie Jean has had her leg amputated this week because of gangrene, we have ordered a new summer house for the garden and Hannah still job hunting. World news has mainly been the rescue of Greece and the Euro, and then in the last 2 days the bombs and shootings in Norway. I hope that the weather here is now improving for your return as it has been pretty wet for ages, now just cloudy and windy.

Anyway just want to wish you a Very Happy Birthday for Tuesday (hope you may receive this around that day) and we will have big celebrations next weekend before you go to London. Take care and see you at Gatwick very soon.

All our love, Mum and Dad xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi there, my very busy girl. I am counting down the days before your return. Just two weeks now and I expect you have gone through exhaustion and tiredness and are enjoying every moment remaining and making good use of your time. I hope you found India to be everything you thought it would be and more. You have said you would like to return and I know you will capture everything in your writing and photographs and friendships to always have that memory of now to come back to one day.

I heard from Kristian, who thanked me for dropping off the details to blog you at his house. He said he had been on the Raleigh site and watched videos and was very envious. No doubt you will have lots to chat about at work. Your work timetable has been posted.

You have received a postcard from Milly - arrived this week. No doubt you will catch up with her at your camping weekend.

Mark damaged his new Ipad! Has only owned since Friday. I had to return to Carphone Warehouse today(Sunday) for them to try to reconnect to his phone. They had to keep the phone as well. Can you imagine Mark without his phone? They are keeping until Tuesday when I am back in Ipswich.

Rosie and Sammy are enjoying the warm weather. Sammy still sleeps at the back of my chair in the evening though - breathing heavily on my hair - don't know why she sits right there and does that, and Rosie is always on my lap - so nothing has changed in your absence. I am surrounded by cats. I am sure they will be very happy to see you home and lay on your lap instead.

Louise is sending regular photos of Isabella - now crawling. She looks a lot like Mike.

I am visiting Kent next weekend (the one before your return). Michelle rang to confirm she had received the letter I sent her and said she was going to blog you. Also said she would like to come to visit you in Sheffield. You will have to speak to her to organise.

I will be in touch again soon but thought I would just update you on a few things.

I think of you every day and wonder what stage of the building project you have reached. I am sure you are still having a wonderful time and its not all about the building of the house but also about building relationships and friendships with the people you are meeting. Learning their culture and understanding so much about their land. I can't state enough how very proud I am that you are there doing what you excel at and hope you are fully recovered from sore feet and leech bites to be able to participate in everything.

With lots of hugs and love

    Mum xxxxxxxoooxxxxxx
