Tuesday was time to head over to Huskurhaddi to pop into Echo 3’s camp which was already something of a work of art after only a few days. This group have the tough task of digging some very deep elephant trenches and putting up elephant proof solar fences under the heat of the Indian sun. As it’s too hot to work after eleven o'clock, they have to get up in the dark and start working at half five in the morning after the all important porridge and coffee intake. They've made brilliant progress and have dug further than expected after the first week. Luckily the camp is on the banks of the reservoir so they can cool off whenever they get a chance.
Here are some shots taken by Katy Star of the team building the camp.
The afternoons so far have been spent building and now decorating the camp with some lovely additions.

Thank you for your lovely messages and the luck for my first project. I’m living in a basha (basically a hammock) by a beautiful lake where I can watch the sun set every night! There is a school very local to us and we were lucky enough to be invited to the headmasters hose warming party where were served delicious food on a big banana leaf and I also got a henna tattoo! Hop you all are keeping well and Alex is enjoying school! x x x

They’ve also been up to the local village, a ten minute walk through the fields, for a welcome meeting with the villagers and to a housewarming party for the local headmaster, not bad eh! They’ll also be teaching at the school twice a week and we went up with a few of them to see the first lesson in action...

So it looks and sounds like they're absolutely loving live out there and we can see why. They're making the most of their afternoons by working at the school and we've now heard of raft building and a treasure hunt around the reservoir.
Here are their messages to friends and family...

5 days in Huskurhaddi and its absolutely beautiful – digging elephant trenches and living on the edge of a gorgeous lake, infested with small crocodiles apparently but we still swim every day! Have already been to the Golden Temple and a house warming party for the nearby school’s headmaster which was amazing! Still getting used to being stopped in the street every few meters to have photos taken with the locals. Hope all is well in Winch, missing you all but I’m glad I’m nowhere near you guys because I absolutely stink 95% of the time. Showers don’t really exist.
Love you all!

Thanks for your letter – it’s just arrived and just in time! I’m having an amazing time – digging lots of trench with only pointy sticks and other Indian tools! Luckily we’re close to a small village and a reservoir, so when it’s too hot to work there is lots to do. We also had a day trip to the Golden Temple it was incredible. You should get a letter (soon?) at some point. But so much happens every day it’s already very out of date!
Lots of love

We have done so much since getting here at Phase 1m including teaching at the local school, going to a huge house warming party/lunch at the headmaster of the school kindly invited us to, a day trip to the Golden Temple and of course some trench digging in the heat! How is home? I saw Newcastle came back from losing 4-0 to 4-4! Also some people have said Carroll has left us a swell, can you confirm? Thanks you for messages they mean so much to me.

Looks like a great crowd of people to be working with too. I've had flu so have absolutely no news except the weather, which I would prefer not to talk about! Jeff meant to be going to Egypt Sunday, we'll have to wait and see what happens with all those brave people standing up to the old regime.

Some differene from a scheme in Glasgow anyway! It's cold, wet and miserable here so you're deff not missing anything here. I've been telling everyone at work what you're upto and they are all shocked and impressed! Keep it going mate. Proud of you.

ReplyDeleteHi Babe,
You are looking very beautiful and tanned in the photos on the blog...how you do it whilst digging elephant trenches, I do not know!
It sounds like hard work, but it looks like you're coping well. I'm off to meet Shanika for a Starbucks in Hammersmith soon. Ciara was off school sick today, so I watched Mamma Mia! with her (haven't seen it in 2 years)! It's a very miserable day here today, but it cheered us up. At the end when they're singing Waterloo on the stage, I was cringing as I had a flashback to when you, Kyla and I saw it in Richmond and I stood up and started dancing and tried to pull you up too, but you wouldn't! ARGHH! Going to a party tomorrow night, so should be fun. Sinead will be there too, but Nichola is very annoyed as her invitation was taken back!! Not happy.
Carry on working hard and having fun!
Lots of love,
Lucy xxxx

How I laughed when I read you were getting up at half five to dig trenches, your body won't know what's hit it!!! But your doing a great & worthy job so keep going! My computer is hit or miss with sending messages but yes, Carroll left NUFC! 2 go 2 Liverpool for 35 Million (Torress to Chelsea) but you didn't sign anyone & Shola is injured so to come back after losing @ HT 4-0 was brilliant! Blues signed Obefemi M! Always viewing the updates & thinking of you, Love as always, Mom & Dad XXX Keep Smiling!

ReplyDeleteTo Emily Howell - Well you stink 95% of the time anyway so it wouldn't make much difference to any of us.
ReplyDeleteIs the lake infested with crocodiles or just your fetching crocs? I can't remember if you got any in the end, I hope you did.
I keep training newbies up at the screen and find myself referring to 'my friend Emily who worked here, she's in India now....*pause for emotional effect*...sigh, she was great'.
I have a feeling they suspect 'India' is some kind of code word for heaven..and that actually you've died and it's the only way I can cope.
You look like you're having such a good time, I can't imagine how exciting it is each day just doing something completely new and building your own little community. Even the sound of digging slop pits excites me!

so glad to see an update featuring you! you look like such a pro trekker already, it is amazing. you also look really comfortable/at home with everything you are doing, even though you are a million miles away, which is so good to see. i'm so happy for you right now =] looks and sounds like you are having the best time already.
as for your stinking...i have probably smelt far worse so don't worry. remember when Jamez came to my house after two weeks of festivals and he smelt like biscuits? that was gross. i doubt you smell that bad. maybe just 10% that bad.
so. do you work all day every day or are you allowed to stop for party? can you feel yourself getting massive guns? have you had henna done too? is it better than the last stuff we got? have you seen any crocodiles? apparently if one attacks you, you have to either punch it on the snout or poke it in the eye. i cant remember which one...but i'd try them both just for luck. ummm are the toilets really as horrendous as we imagined? oh and have you used the shewee? i still find that thing bloody hilarious.
that is loads of questions. i will go now. i have loads of really important things to do. mainly sitting around.

ReplyDeleteHi you, it looks like an amazing place to be, the photos probably dont do it justice. It must be great to see that sunset every night and the stars must look incredible too. How was the golden temple, thats a great photo of you on the steps....one of my favourites :)
I can imagine how shattered you must be at the end of the day as it looks an exhausting job digging those trenches, but the time spent with the kids at the school must be brilliant - you certainly looked like you were enjoying it.
Our day in London last week was good, but there were hoards of people and we could barely move for the crowds so we went to covent garden after watching the celebrations for some space. We bought fortune cookies and apparantly I have to be 'in it to win it'! Didnt get to see the ambassadors but did go to the crypt for lunch which brought back some nice memories :)

Congratulations to you and your fellow ventures on completing your epic trek you will all be looking forward to two days rest at base camp before setting off on your next challenging project,Mum was asking are your new boots broken in yet(lol,Mum was also wondering how you are adapting to the Indian cuisine we seem to have a lot of uneaten packets of biscuit's in the house at the moment. To keep you up to date with events at prenton park an American company are in advance stage of negotiations with Peter Johnson on buying the club it is the same company that tried to buy Sheff Wed I will keep you updated on any developments,on the pitch they lost 2-1 to Peterborough but they are currently 15th in the league.
