Raleigh India 10K Fun Run!

During final wash up Field base will be organising a 5K and a 10K Fun Run for the Venturers and PMs to raise money for Raleigh India projects.

They will of had 9 weeks out on Phase to get fit. The Adventure Phase saw them tackling arduous treks, challenging cycle routes and extreme rafting. The Environmental Phase was hard core digging, giving them a full body work out. While the Community Phase involved hard manual labour carrying heavy bricks building up their muscles ... But now it's time to see what they're really made of.

So on Thursday 16th December it will be every man for himself, as we cast off the Raleigh ethos of team work and pit them head to head up against each other. Those signed up so far are:

5K
Caroline, Hannah W, Kat, Raghu, Natalie

10K
Olly, Dr Phil, Rach, Hannah L, George, Simon, Coen, Michiel, Iain, Erdinch, Jen, Anniek, Arthur, Kim, Jonny, Owen, Jack, Hubertus, David, Ryan, Sam, Olivia, Sarah, Polly C, Anna, Dr Josse

Importantly though, they will all be raising money for Raleigh India projects, so we're asking Venturer & PM friends and family to sponsor them at http://www.justgiving.com/raleigh-india-fun-run/.

Fundraising money from venturers to join a Raleigh expedition covers the cost of their experience and of running our permanent field bases. However, it only goes some of the way of covering the costs of building materials and local labour for our projects which support marginalised communities and environments in India.

India witnesses a huge disparity between the urbanised wealthy and the rural poor. Although government initiatives are targeting this and attempting to redress the balance; changing an embedded culture in a sub-continent as huge as India is not a fast process.

By partnering with both local grass roots NGOs, government agencies and international NGOs, Raleigh has been able to access and address some core issues here in India.

The Community projects focus on a targeted areas, building relationships, friendships and exchanging culture, educating them in the importance of education for their children, community health, and giving them the means to sustain a their livelihood in an environmentally friendly way.

Our Environmental projects in India focus on educating communities and youth in reducing the human impact upon habitats to preserve the natural biodiversity. The projects concentrate measures on reducing the interaction between wild animals and people and the resultant negative impact on people or their resources, or wild animals or their habitat.

Although Raleigh expeditions are relatively small groups, the message we send in our presence and activities here has a huge multiplying effect. Through concentrated and sustained efforts our project groups have begun to make a tangible difference in the areas Raleigh India has focused. But we always need more money, as there is so much more we can do. So please dig deep and donate now.

Hey hey, bit of a stressful week after getting your panicked message! Tried to book EVERYTHING in India but obviously that was ridiculous and really expensive so spoke to Thunder-Mafia-Melville and made an executive decision to skip Goa altoghether and just head straight to Darjeeling. Means we save a LOT of money as Goa is crazy expensive at this time of year.

As for my flights - I am landing at 4.40 in the morning (sorry) on the 19th. My flight number is BA119.

I have sent all this in my last letter but who knows when it'll arrive?

Saw your smily tanned face grinning out of a conga line and it made me miss you so much possum! I am so excited to see you.

    Love you - Jamie xxx

    Yo Gengibre,
    Hugely important news for you…
FIFA awarded the World Cup hosts today. 2018 goes to Russia, 2022 goes to...Qatar!!! We were out in the first round! England is in outrage at the moment. Big Phil is on the ceiling with fury. I might hold off my news about Chelsea, might be too much bad news in one hit. Don’t want you throwing yourself in a trench in desperation. While you are digging trenches and helping communities England is building snowmen. Actually down your street in lovely Surrey I’m sure they are erecting their igloos again!
    Little bit miss you xx

  11. Hi Anniek @ Echo Three

Hallo lieve schat!! Take care!
    Groeten en XXX P&M

  13. Owen Duffin Echo 3. Hi Owen, Hope all is going well on your elephant trenches and you're enjoying the digging! When you next get to an internet cafe you'll really enjoy looking at pictures of baby Oscar- he's really sweet. He has Laura's auburn hair and a dimple in his chin! As you can imagine Neil is great with him and he calms down when he hears his daddy's voice. We are getting on with Christmas preparations and the shops are now manic. We can't wait until you're back although I know it won't be for a while yet. Look after yourself, love Mum and Dad x

    Hi Liz,
We received your letter this weekend. Thank you for nice the present, we will use it tonight while we are celebrating Sinterklaas with the family in Rotterdam and think about you! How are the elephants treating you? We live in a different world with snow affecting daily life and sports. Do we have to send your running shoes, we are already collecting money to sponsor your run!? Take care and have fun. Big hug. Mum and Dad

Lucy darling, just been catching up with all that you've been doing and feel so proud of you!! The photos are lovely-you look at home being a teacher sweetheart.
Sorry the messages and letters have been thin on the ground for you. I have been thinking of you all the time. I didn't want you to know at the time but I have been in hospital for a week. My left index finger became badly infected at work one evening. I was sent off sick and told to go back the next morning to have it looked at properly. The hand surgeon admitted me onto the ward straight away and they immediately started me on intravenous antibiotics. After two operations and five days on IV's they discharged me from hospital on the 1st Dec. It's healing at the moment and a little difficult to do things being as I'm left handed. Been signed off work for two weeks so we put the tree up yesterday as we were all snowed in! We can't wait for you to be here for Christmas telling us all about your adventures with a blow out Christmas dinner in front of you! I really hope you get this message soon as I was afraid you'd be upset having not heard from us. Missing you loads and looking forward to the 18th. Here's sending you a big hug and loads of kisses! Love you loads, mum, dad, Harry and Nan x x x x x x P.S I will look for library books x x x

    Lieve Belletje,
