Ladies who Lunch: The Pollys day trip to Charlie One

The two Pollys popped over to visit Charlie One yesterday. We were only there for a few hours but happily did manage to fit in lunch. Charlie One have the priviledge of being cooked for everyday by the local community they’re living amongst – most delicious!

Last time Polly B was there, a small cyclone hit the village and today Polly B was blamed for bringing the bad weather with her as the skies opened just as we arrived!

Not deterred by the weather, the group proudly took me on a tour of their site, showing off their luxury shower complete with drainable bamboo flooring, a very hygienic and sturdy three bowls area and their communal living room.

The group were in great spirits, happily posing for photos and filming the music video which were the purposes of our fleeting visit. I also took the opportunity to catch up with the group and get the low down on their experience so far ...

The group’s arrival last Saturday was a big event as the villagers were excited and intrigued to meet them all. With such a warm reception the group were keen to start working straight away on building the five houses to replace the mud huts that the villagers currently live in.

The first task was to lay all the foundations, this involved digging down a foot and half - tough labour but they told me it was good physical work to do.

After this their next task was to move a small mountain of rock. All equipment and materials are delivered at the bottom of the village and so the group had to form a human chain to get the rocks up to the plot sites. This was hard graft but the group bonded with singsongs initiated by Caroline. I’m told the villagers looked on amused at the group belting out their guilty pleasures and some musical theatre numbers.

Job done and all this rock was subsequently laid into the foundation trenches and then cemented up about a foot from ground level. The group have stormed ahead with their work since their arrival and today at the site they were finishing off the foundations of plot five.

For the group’s final task of the phase they will be putting up the walls of one of the houses on plot one. We’d just missed the erecting of the first door frame into the plot this morning, but the PMs happily posed next to it when we arrived.

It’s not long to go now, as Charlie One only have four more working days left because they’re taking the weekend off. On Saturday they will visit a local tea factory and on Sunday they’ve planned a Sports day with the villagem, where they’re going to introduce them to such British classics as the Egg and Spoon Race and the Sack Race – I can’t wait to hear how that goes!

Group highlights:
  • Community party where they taught each other their culture’s dancing – for the Raleigh group this consisted of limbo dancing and the Macarena!!
  • Finding a frog with wings in their ‘living room’
  • James amusing the villagers by digging like a dog with his hands!
Working alongside local Masons and the Villiagers themselves, it’ great to see Charlie One are truly part of the community. They’re a well bonded and fun group, I hope they enjoy the final week of their Phase One and looking forward to catching up with them all at Changeover.

    Dikke kus Karin

Got your message on the other blog, thanks very much. You're doing tremendous work there and I'm glad to hear you're leading the way with the sing-songs. Also glad to see that your Bon Jovi bandana is getting some use.

The photos look great, seeing you in them makes me miss you even more. Keep going, and I'll speak to you soon. I love and miss you, take care.

    Dear Aimee

What a colourful village you're in. The soil colour reminds me of Shaldon sand, but I can see how muddy it is where you are building.

Great to see you 'in situ' showing how well organised the camp is and also that you are wearing safety glasses! Not glamorous, but after both Max and I getting cement dust in our eyes, know you wouldn't want that to happen. Hope you are as fit and well as you look!!

The team have clearly done an amazing job so far, would love to hear you all 'singing while you work'! Your week-end off sounds very interesting and well deserved.......

All of us are fine including as ever, Poppy and Ginger. Oh, and still waiting for Sarah to have her baby, as well as your cousin Ben's fiance Kara to have hers. Always exciting to have new babies in the family.

Lots of love from us all xxxxxxxxx

PS Night Cops - what a programme, glad you introduced me to it. Plus, Spooks has finished, but I haven't watched the last episode yet, its not the same watching it with Daddy...........

PPS Aunty Rosie from Australia sends her love. Adam and Meryl send their best wishes as well. Also, Pippa is babysitting for Bruce and Gill again tomorrow, think she's realised its the best way to make money!

    Charlie One - Aimee Welch

    Dear Aimee

    BABY NEWS!!!

New additions to the family. Your australian cousin Ben and his fiance Kara are the proud parents of - Logan James Taylor Robinson, born 29th October at 6.15pm weighing 9 and a half pounds!! (You were 7lbs 12 oz). Logan was born on Andrew's birthday. It must be bitter-sweet for him to become a Grandfather in his circumstances. Michaela is, of course, absolutely thrilled at becoming a Grandmother!!!!

Uncle David is a Grandfather again. Sarah and Adam's baby was also born on 29th October. Jake weighed in at over 8lbs (I don't have any more info at the moment). Jake was over 10 days late, everyone was beginning to think Sarah would never actually have her baby!

So, history repeats itself. Two babies in the same family born 12,000 miles apart, but within hours of each other!

    Lots of love Mum xxxxxxxxxx

The spade broke at the King's Troop Turf Cutting Ceromony, let's hope that wasn't a sign and I'm still in the process of moving all our files across for DII, it takes ages!!

    Take care

    Lorna xx

PS- Ann Widecombe is still going strong on Strictly!! Not sure how though!
