Loops, loos and leeches...

The teams have now been out in their new teams for exactly one week today and judging from what we've seen and heard they’re all happy as Larry and settling into their new homes and groups.

The postman arrived yesterday and was carrying more parcels than Santa Claus on Christmas Eve so these are all now piled up ready to go out to the teams when we next visit them which luckily for Echo 4 (who have the biggest pile of parcels) is today, as Kathryn and Celine are off to see them as part of the loop visits they’ve been doing for the last few days.

Life here at field base is pretty frantic this phase as we’re two people down as Polly (Logs Manager) and Una (Admin) are both out with the project teams. However our animal team members are on the increase as the toads Kate and Wills are now back from their adventures in Kerala and have taken up residency in the shower again.

Our newest team member is Betty the calf from the farm across the road who likes to hang out here with her best mate Simon the stork. However, she is clearly bored of just grazing on the grass as we caught her having a nosey in the staff dorm yesterday. I think she was after the early January copy of Heat magazine that someone brought over with them many, many weeks ago.

As the rain in the UK seems to take a break, so has it here with the teams all drying out now and enjoying the clear blue skies and hot temperatures once again.Whilst I’ve not been able to get out on the loop as yet to catch up with the teams myself (someone has to be here to keep an eye on all the animals), the rest of the guys have been out travelling far and wide to meet up with all the teams.

Becca left us last Friday to visit, Charlie 1 in Vellary, Tango 6 at their camp in Amba and then headed straight over to see our far away friends in Tango 5 for a few days. She’s not back until the weekend when we’ll be able to get the full lowdown and the photos of them. So for now here’s a quick summary of what they’ve been up to.

Charlie 1 had a wet start to their phase with heavy rains turning their tropical paradise camp into something similar to Glasontbury 2007 (I wonder if they held their own silent disco...?) However they battled through it, continued with the work on the house and digging of the huge hole needed for the new bio-gas unit that they’re installing in the village. In addition to all the work they’re doing throughout the day, they’ve continued the evening football matches with the locals that the first group set up, been swimming in some waterfalls and had a treasure hunt around the village with big cash prizes apparently. And Georgia told me last night of a few dances they were putting together to show to the locals at a ‘gathering’ on Friday night. Video footage has been requested so you can all witness it but we’ll see if they deliver.

Tango 6 also started trekking in Kerala through the rain showers which meant that the leeches were out in force enjoying the damp weather. So Becca joined them on Saturday at their camp in Amba and delivered them with some much needed (and very fetching) leech socks to help try and keep the beasts at bay. Everyone seems to be coping though and having an amazing time. The treks are always tough but the incredible views and campfire fun more than make up for it. That night Sian told me tales of a camp disco around some ipod speakers then an early night to be up to head out of camp by sunrise the next morning. Since she left them they’ve also had a rest day so their muscles can recover a bit, which they spent making rafts and racing each other across the river, and yesterday they did the first of two cycle days and covered 45km followed by a dip in a river at last night’s camp so they’re all happy, if a little achy, bunnies.

Tango 5, also in Kerala, have managed to conquer the second highest peak in Southern India despite the wet weather and also survived their survival day in the rain so they’ve also been very happy to see the back of those black clouds. I spoke to Sophie after they’d had a very long day of early morning rafting followed by a tough trek of 17km but the scenery was so incredible that it only felt like about 16.5km which is good to know. I also caught up with Ross yesterday (who’d been up since before 4am!) and they were looking forward to their rest day today to get a chance to have a good wash and clean some of their now very dirty clothes. I’m just glad I can’t smell them all from here.

Celine, Kathryn and Theja have also been out and about catching up with the other teams. They're currently out catching up with both of the Echo groups so I'll be putting all their news up on here in the next few days. But for now, Here’s what they got up to with Charlie 2 on Monday.

Charlie 2 have been cracking on with building the much needed eco-sanitation toilets in the beautiful village of BD Munti along with the local masons and village families. They’ve been enjoying working in the school that they’re based at with some groups taking part in handwashing lessons and a sportsday.

James, Simone and Alex run the hand washing class at the school.

The group were also honoured to be invited to one of the mason’s wedding which took place on Sunday. So once they’d got over the excitement of being invited the next big question was what the heck were they going to wear!! Their usual glamorous outfits of a Raleigh t-shirt, shorts and walking boots clearly wasn’t going to cut the mustard at this bash. So off they went into the village where they managed to buy Saris for the girls and the boys all got shirts made by the village tailor, he was mighty busy that morning!

They all had an amazing time and are still buzzing from it so we can’t wait to see the photos and will get them on here as soon as we get out mits on them. The next evening, after more toilet building, they were also busy celebrating Jonny’s birthday and the loop visit was with them that day so he got all the birthday messages you’d sent through from home which was lovely.

We may not yet have any photos of the group at the mason’s wedding but we do have some photos that Kathryn took while out with them on Monday...

Chaos on arrival at the school where the group are staying.

The school room that the venturers now call home for these few weeks.

Cat (PM) also teaching at the school.

Mona (PM) with one of the completed toilets and its new owners.

Maddy, Anna, Georgi and Sachin with the masons and some of the family they're working with

Anna and Sachin hard at work.

Georgia, Lauren, Bryony and Jonny (birthday boy) walking home from a hard day's work.

Here are a few notes in response to some of the questions you’ve sent in...

To Daphne Koolen’s mum – thanks for the message regarding her onward journey, our team had already left to visit Daphne’s team when the message came through I’m afraid. The venturers currently have no way of communication other than this blog until they’re back at  changeover, so hopefully things can wait until she’s back here at field base on Sunday 13th March and she can then get in touch with you.

To the parents of Martyn Parry – Apologies that Martyn wasn’t in the Charlie 1 group photo, we’re not sure what he was up to at the time! He’s safe and well though and gearing up for his birthday on Friday.

To the family and friends of Ben Shroeder – I read out all of your messages over the phone last night to him and he’ll be getting them all today as the team is going out on their loop visit so all your wishes got through to him and your parcels also arrived in the post so he has these also.

And here are more messages from the guys that have come in to us so far...

From Charlie 1

From Ameze Simbo
To friends and family
Hey again! I’m now part of the Charlie 1 crew, doing community work in Vellary, Kerala. We set up camp two days ago and it has rained every day since then! We are building a biogas unit for a family here and we hope to finish digging the hole today. We have a river outside the house that we are camping outside, so we can have  a proper wash! My group are cool and really chilled out and the food that the family makes for us is amazing!

PS – still no bad guts ha ha!

From Georgia Brooke-Hitching
To – B-H’s
Greetings from Vellary! I’m about to spend the afternoon digging a massive hole for a biogas unit for the village we are staying in at the moment. The villagers are so friendly and when we arrived on Wednesday they greeted us with chai and gave us lunch – curry served on a banana leaf with rice! Amazing experience! We are going to a town on Sunday that is pronounced ‘assault and battery’ which made me laugh! Anyway I need to go sun cream up before work so lots of love to everyone.
Georgia x
PS – looks like quite a few are going on to Goa and travelling after and apparently most people are going on recommended flight so I could catch a ride to the airport at around 4am ish because the flight is at 6am. Could you pass this on to Sophie please – 4am on the 6th April ish. Thanks! X x
Send my love to Gma.

I am now up to date with your blog after receiving them as messages, It sounds like you’re having an amazing time, I knew you’d love teaching although I think I’d find it very daunting! When you read this you will be back from Kilimanjaro! I have worked out if you made it to the top you would be on your penultimate day of descent as I write. I really do hope you made it, but of course altitude sickness can affect anyone. However, knowing you and your determination, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you made it! I am now on a community project in a small village called Vellary. The work is hard but the food and children are awesome.
Much love,

Hello mummy and daddy – thank you for your last message and Kathryn’s blog. I am now on community and I am having a hard but amazing time. There has been a fair bit of rain but the people who live here, in particular the children (including naughty Nander!) are so full of joy I’ve hardly noticed. I’ve got my birthday on our rest day and I share it with someone else in the group  and there’s a chance we’ll be going on a tiger safari!
Speak to you soon.

Hello everyone! Hope you are all fine and dandy and keeping yourselves amused. It’s a baking hot day here in India and I’m currently on site building one of our ‘eco-sanitaion units’ (aka a loo) as part of my community phase. The group is pretty cool and we were lucky enough to be invited to an Indian wedding yesterday. ‘Twas fairly snazzy! Back home I want to wish Rosie a happy belated 2nd 18th birthday and more birthday wishes for Peter, Annie, and Fif for when they come! Pam Pam, I hope you are having a cracking time in London, and Lucy – Grenada sounds sublime so have the time of your life when you’re there. Missing you guys al so so much.

Hello everyone! I’m having an amazing time here in India. We are working at an amazing little village right above the reservoir which stretches right around - sometimes it feels like a little island! We went to a PROPER Indian wedding yesterday in another village- all the girls had our very own sari’s made by a tailor in the village. The kids here are hilarious – so full of energy and they pronounce my name ‘Fry’ so I pretty much introduce myself as that now! Missing Devon and you all loads but probably not missing the weather so much! Hope are all we amazing as always, keep blogging me as it’s amazing to hear from home! Have send postcards etc hopefully you’ll get them soon! Love you all millions x x x
PS Kathyleeno – AMAZING news, seriously I can’t wait for the gossip! Have an amazing time!! Love you and miss you a ridiculous amount x x x x

Hello there, everything is going super well here. Group are really nice lovely people. Building toilets, it’s pretty crazy! We went to an Indian wedding yesterday and got a really pretty sari, nice to dress up and abandon the craghoppers! Sorry my letters have sort of failed but you’ll get one eventually. Miss your faces.
Lots of love,

PS – Anna, internet is out of bounds so I’m pretty much uncontactable, will try to write a decent email when I can. Photos wise I’m generally a sweaty betty because of the sun so don’t feel inclined to jump in front of many cameras.

Hi everyone! I hope everything is all good back home. I’ve just started the community phase where we build eco-toilets. I’m learning sooo much all the time and everyone here is really fun and easy-going. Yesterday was probably the best day I’ve had in India as we went to an Indian wedding all dressed up and then we watched England v India with one of the local families but there was a power cut one over from the end! Hopefully will speak soon to you all x

Hey! Good to hear everything is good at home. I’ve just recovered from being ill over the past week but I’m feeling well now. Last night we watched the IND vs ENG game with locals and we got to the last 5 balls and there was a power cut so we missed the rest of it but I heard it ended in a tie. Also caught the last few minutes of the CC final and it looked good! We also went to a wedding yesterday, it was amazing and I’ll tell you more soon! Keep me updated.

To anyone who cares... or doesn’t.
I’ve been instructed to leave a nice, concise, general message about my life so here goes... India is very hot, I have awful sunburn, my greasy patchy beard is even worse than that but still not as disgusting as my rancid pepperoni parts. I have made many friends in the village , but made very few toilets as ‘D and V’ has hit the camp a little. On this subject, I am disappointed in myself that I only got the ‘V’ so I’ll make it my aim to get the ‘D’ as soon as possible to get the full house. Beautiful. Hope everything is above average at home and I hope Tessa escaped the fire at home...Dyson, not so much. Thank you, you lovely people, Andy x x x

Hoe is het met jullie? Hier heftig! Trek is erg zwaar.

Back soon with news from the Echo groups and then photos from Charlie 1 and both the Tango groups when Becca returns to us at the weekend.

I can't believe it hasn't arrived yet! It's probably coming up to 20 ish days since I sent it. I sent you another one on monday (28/02.
I can't go to lectures now - it's evening! Your blog message about crisps made me laugh embarassingly loudly, just like when I read your comment about teaching the kids the macarena. Wow. Do they have instruments of any sort (other than their voices)?
I hope you weren't westernising their musical culture by teaching them western scales! Do you know any of the Indian rhythm noises/words? I remember studying them at some point.
Speaking of music, I'm going to be playing some mean funk guitar in the free-for-all concert with some coursemates. We are doing a Jackson 5 song called 'working day and night'. It is almost dangerously funky. The concert is on the 1st April unfortunately, but there we will probably do another song in May.

The photos look amazing as ever. The wedding must have been something. I am well jealous, innit.

    ay mees you.

What do you think of the building trade then..do you enjoy it ? if so you must let me in on the secret!

Pap.

I know you will cope with the rain (coming from Somerset especially Street) By the Way I read in the News yesterday Street is now a big hit with Chinese tourist because of the Clark shoes history. Lucy and the girls are here with me they came in last night. We cant wait to see the footage of your new activities and photos. I know you are going to enjoy yourself in all the games, especially the football. Please look after yourself and dont work too hard (laugh)

    Paws up X-factor,

Apologies for the extreme lack of contact for the past 5 weeks- the good news is that we are done with writtens and only have 2 OSCEs left... Hurrah! I have this blog as an icon on my phone, so have been keeping up to date and suffering from extreme jealously when reading it in the sl/with Ruth practicing feeling my pregnant abdomen...

I thought you might enjoy some celebrity updates (courtesy of tmz):
*Charlie Sheen has become acutely psychiatrically unwell -an example quote is “I am on a drug. It’s called Charlie Sheen. It’s not available. If you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body.”

*Lindsay Lohan looks like she might be innocent in that whole shoplifting thing.

*Xtina was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, and now her friends are saying she should be in rehab.

Hope you are having a super awesome time (still using the factor 50?!),

    Andrew

Not sure if this is how I send you a message. I have clicked 'comment' at the bottom of the blog as instructed but remain unconvinced....
Just been checking for photos of you and saw your messages from 14th feb. I passed it on to the other Bobs in case they havent seen - i suspect they havent, especially jo and ali bob, you know what they're like...
News from Brid: Janie is coming down this weekend so some of us are hooking up (not jo because she is boyfriend bound) and I havent heard from Ash in a while but I think it might be my fault cause my phone was broken for a while. Sigh. Emily and I are pining for you to come home, bridport is getting a little sunnier although not massively so. Sri Lanka was good but seems like a long time ago now. Better write to you proper init, rather than go on on here? I will write bobber. Hope you're well and enjoying yourself. News here is that I have had three dates with that guy, but am most certainly NOT going for it for many reasons ... he's a smoker... and he's a friend of mine's ex and I've heard all sorts of info recently! He's asked me on a fourth and it's all a bit tricky. Hilariously I even have a date lined up with someone else (as a laugh, he's a friend) so that could end up being my get-out clause.

Anyway. I hope it's gorgeous out there, and that Raleigh whatsitsface don't think I'm too strange for posting you news about my entangled dating life. That's a lie, I don't care.

John is out (been out all night) and you ma is still crashed, which is a billy bargain because it means I only have myself to sort out. Still blogging and being patient to find out how you have been getting on digging holes. I am loosing track of time a bit so not sure when you get back to base camp. I presume everything is still crackalackin and you are still having fun. I am in the middle of writing another letter which I will try and post next week. John is performing in his Barbershop Band at durham student union soon. They now have a dance routine included in the act so I am hoping I am not down south. I will try and video it if I can and maybee load it onto facebook. Still only got two friends, they should be starting another campaign again soon to find Steve some friends. Loads of people are asking how you are getting on and I keep giving the blog site out. Well enjoy your sunday and I will wriite again soon. Love D xxxxxx

Missing you terribly - taken to wearing a couple of your tops today as a way of coping! Got a coffee morning booked for raising money for HEC on the 10th April and Lucy and Bridget Brinkley said they'd help so far! Have spoken to Lucy and Chiara recently - another way of coping with missing you! Chiara is off to Madrid on the 20th March! Bridge asked after you and said Michael B still working at Timberland Kingston. Ben was at Star Rd at the weekend and the man who brings the lady in the wheelchair at church asked "how's the other half?" (meaning Ben) that mad me feel very uncomfortable yesterday but I was laughing to myself about it today. Arlene asked after you again. Have seen Daria a few times as she wants me to go through a 235 page report with her - so far we are nearly half way! She seems a lot better.
You've done nearly 6 weeks now - half way through! I mentioned Ben's new gf on last blog but she only lasted 2 days. Keep on trekking - do you get to pick any tea while you are walking through the plantations. Love Mum xxxxx

Nothing much going on here. Your ma has been off work with a chest infection for a week - the slacker. Everton have been up and down yet again. Two good wins in the league against Sunderland(H) and Newcastle(A). Unfortunately, sandwiched in between, saw us dumped out of the FA Cup at home by Reading. Very poor.

My most darling of all the Raleigh-Internationals:
I know that I previously stated that I loved you more than jelly tots, but a friend recently showed me what a jelly tot was and I have decided that stating that I love you more than them is not really saying much. So: I love you more than creme eggs.

I have lovely visions of you sitting in the long drop getting teary over my amazingly unsentimental message - the long drop does seem an appropriate place for that kind of nonsense Brookie, I'm ashamed of you. Ashamed. Pull yourself together, woman. Only joking, I would cry if I got a love letter from someone as lovely as I.

My exams start tomorrow, so I am currently slaving over an essay plan on the cerebellum's control of motor output (a topic I didn't understand to begin with) and wondering whether I can get a pass by knowing that it can be divided into 10 lobules. Charming stuff.

I don't know if I can send you random stuff while you're out there, so just imagine opening a present from me. You can decide what it is. Go nuts.

Love you more than creme eggs, Tilda xxxx

    Brookie!
Have finally worked out how to use this! Sorry to keep you waiting for so long.
I hope you're having an amazing time! I've been thinking of you loads - life is miserable without our skype conversations... :(
I'm sure you're charming the socks off everyone with your lovely brookieness!
Tilda's much better at writing these messages than I am. I'm not too good at one-way conversations...
I also don't have much to say about my dating life, seeing as it's non-existent. And I wish I could tell you about my work but there isn't much of that either because I'm becoming increasingly lazy in my old age - you and I aren't 18 for much longer...
You might find this hard to imagine where you are right now but it actually snowed last night, which is rather depressing, seeing as it actually felt like it was going to start getting a little warmer. But the crocuses and daffodils are persevering and looking very pretty.
Other than that, I'm experiencing a huge craving for chocolate because I gave it up for Lent and after one day already have withdrawal symptoms.
Miss you oodles and noodles and love you to the moon and back!

LIeve man. Jaap

I spoke with Expedia & they will only talk to you as you are the a/c holder unless you give me permission to talk with them but either way you need to call them on 0044 20302 48211. It will cost £90.00 to change tickets but as long as the same class of seat is booked, then there is no charge. itinerary number: 12439323282
We really enjoyed Stephens birthday and he was so pleased with your card & everyone missed you & was asking after you. He was quite emotional turning 40!
I just want to wish you the best of luck with your forthcoming trek and to say that we love & miss you loads, all our love as ever, Mom & Dad xxx

Deze mum sends you a lot of love and is missing you, praying that you will write us one day ! Mama

Most gorgeous of the Raleighans: I miss you terribly. I posted on this blog DAYS ago and I hope they sent you a little message for you to cry over in the long drop. It was heartfelt.

Berlin ist uber funky, naturlich, but I am a bit bored already because there is no one here! Anyway I have the wonders of facebook to keep me sane / make me further deranged. The date - boy is still messaging me to my continued astonishment. How much of my ice queen self can any one person suffer and still be so nice? Apparently more than I'd expected. I shall push it to the limit and then inform you of my scientific findings.

I have been watching Glee voraciously and I'm obsessed with the new music. Puck sings a song just for you (joking) called Fat Bottomed Girls. I love it. They also sing a song for me, called Blame it on the Alcohol. I frequently do.

I don't know if you're still digging holes or if you are building little houses, but please make sure they are structurally sound because I know you haven't got a degree in architecture.

Love you more than Berlin, Tilda xxxx

I'm going to get the jump on this slow method of sending you messages and say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I know you're out of internet range but I hope they're delivering you these blog notes, because I want you to know that I will be thinking of you on the 23rd. I'm not entirely sure that's your birthday, there are so many around the end of March, but that is the day I have dedicated to thinking of you. And probably nursing a hangover because I'm going out the night before.

Very excited here because some friends are on a spur of the moment trip to Berlin so I am doing touristy fun things with them and generally not being bored out of my tiny English brain.

Is India faaabulous? I've been but it was a long time ago, and we were in the city so I guess it was quite different. Hope what you're doing feels like it's helping people -- so reall I hope you're digging and not building, because I'm incredulous that a bunch of nineteen year olds are allowed to do structural design. Huh. Basically, don't build anything without plenty of mortar.

Erkkk we have guests staying overnight but I want to sneak to the kitchen and pig out on cake.

Love you more than Cake, Tilda xxxx

Georgi! Sorry I've only just worked out how to send messages (and where to send messages!) Bit late now, as I guess you'll be home soon! I hope you get this anyway!

How's it all going? I bet it's amazingly hot - it's pretty cold here and I'm v. jealous! I hope you're having an amazing time, I'm expecting to see an elephant when you get back (you did promise!) I miss you lots, you'll have to come down to see me when your back - we can have fun in Hamleys again (quaaa! - Puppet noise, obviously!)

Anyway, I shall see you soon! yay! Hope you're still being careful :)

    Love and Kisses, Ruth xxxx
