Feeling hot hot hot...

So here we are, already few days into the third and final phase. Raleigh life seems to have a clock all of its own and I’m pretty sure it goes a lot quicker than all other time pieces.  The temperatures are still rising and we’re up to about 37degrees now which means the sweat levels for everyone have reached new heights along with the need to seek shade at any opportunity.

Anyway, enough about our sweat problems, I’ll quickly move onto the news you really want to hear which is how much everyone else is sweating... No? Ok then, well instead why don’t I update you on how Charlie 1 and Tango 6 are getting on as Naomi, our field base medic for this phase, headed out on the first loop to catch up with them.

First stop was the tropical Vellary to see Charlie 1 who are building the bio-gas units and a tribal village house. Once they’d finished the day’s work digging the mammoth hole to house the biogas dome, they headed off to a local tribal festival where there was all sorts of fun and games taking place.

It was tricky to get everyone in the same spot this time so it we weren't able to get a group photo I’m afraid but we’ll be back out to see them soon when we’ll get more photos, promise. They’re all well though and loving living with the community and getting to know the family that they’re building the unit for. They’re being spoilt with food as the family cooks for them all every day and they’re enjoying the feeling of being in a popular shampoo advert by washing in the local river every day.

The group at the festival.

James and Laura spot something else happening over to the right - unfortunately we never found out what this was...

Sheena, Anne-Romee, Louisa, Thatte, Kate, Holly and Jess look on.

Festival dancing.

Genevieve with her new friend.

Once the tribal party was over, it was time to jump in the car and head down into Kerala to meet the Tango 6 gang at their camp for dinner. The camp was at the bottom of the Amba peak which they would be scaling the next day so they’d had plenty of time to check out the heights they were about to conquer. Lottie and Lucy cooked the group diner of soya balls and rice which I’m sure tasted better than it sounds! The next morning Georgia Z was on porridge duty which also involves the tricky task of waking up the whole team but she did it in the best possible way, by singing a song. We've spoke to them the next night and the whole team made it to the top of the peak which is fantastic.

Lottie, Eeva and Lucy cook up a trangia treat.

Philip keeps the fire going to keep elephants at bay, although I reckon that lunghi would have done the trick...

Catherine getting ready to set off

The group getting ready to leave camp at the bottom of the Amba peak which they were climbing that day.

Tango 6 about to walk up Amba. Back Row L-R - Andy, Georgia, Catherine, Georgia, Lottie, Lucy, Rachel, Danielle, Becca (PM), Ben, Eleri (PM, )Karen, Eeva (PM)
Front row L-R - Philip, Alex, James, Johnson (guide), Nikil (guide), Louis.

The group setting off up to the top of Amba - well done guys.

The latest field base gossip is that Betty the calf and Eddie the egret Edwards seem to have had a bit of a spat as Eddie has been seen hanging out with Gareth the goat. I think Betty is taking it pretty hard as when I woke up yesterday morning the first thing I saw was her trying to get in to our dorm. She must have been after a shoulder to cry on, poor thing. However I was too busy chasing Harry the toad out of the shower to have time to chat.

We’re off to see two more of the teams today, so we’ll be stopping in at BD Munti to see how the toilet building is going at Charlie 2 and then dropping into the trenches to hang out with Echo 4 so we’ll being you news of them very soon. If we manage to climb out of the trench that is...

And a huge thanks again to everyone that has sponsored us for the 10k run, which is getting more and more daunting as the temperatures rise and the start time gets earlier and earlier. We’ve raised over a thousand pounds now which is incredible and everyone is so happy. So thanks, it’s really fantastic to know that you’re all supporting that work that we’re doing out here.

To Dad, Gamie, Grandpa, Rich
Finally had time to work out that the date is and realised I missed your birthday! Glad to see Dad is continuing to cause himself pain on the Spring challenge rather than celebrating his birthday. Gamie and Grandpa - Happy 80th! Sorry I couldn’t make it and you had to put up with the rest of the family, I hope you’ll forgive me. Rich I can’t believe you’re 21, you look awful for your age! I’ve received the 2nd parcel, the sweets went down instantly and were appreciated by all the sports paper is also very popular. My body is aching thanks to the Spaldings getting me that horrible book which has inflicted pain on a few unlucky members of the group. Very excited for a 3rd parcel now, I will be crushed if it is anything less than amazing.
Love from Andy

Hey broseph, brilliant to hear from you. I’m missing your ugly little face but it’s ok because there’s loads of really ugly toads here so I can just pretend they’re you. Yeah I’m working on the white tights issue., my arms are pretty brown, not normal brown but just brown for me. Let me know how the capturing goes ha ha I can just image you two running around in the dark with rope, bin bags and kitchen knives haha. But yeah, go easy on him, no loud noises. Wow a choreographed barber shop – you are just too cool, make sure you get a video. How come it’s in the DSU? You may be cook but you’re not that cool. I’ll get Rochie to bring his mates and abuse your little dance haha. Missing you loads, hope home is cool, lots of love ‘Stuart the cowagous one’ x x x x

From Sarah Churlish
To Bex
It’s so good to hear from you! Yeah the blog messages are really nice to get. Yeah the work is hard but really rewarding, like I actually knew the family we were building the biogas unit for. They cooked our meals every day, we lived on their doorstep and we played with the kids every day. I’m back at field base at the moment for changeover and I’m heading off to the environmental phase next so digging elephant trenches for 18 days. And YES!! I’d come to Vietnam and the rest of Asia – I’m broke but we’ll work it out ha ha! Your travels sound amazing, wish I could have done it with you. I reckon you’d love it here, except all the Raleigh rules ha ah. So when will you be back in the UK, mid April? Will I get to see you at all before you disappear again? Also as if you’ve named your itinerary!!! Oh Bex I miss you! Wishing you were here too. Trying to plan my trip after and I need your organisation! I’ll try and blog back soon, love you x x x x x
PS keep having an awesome time and have 5 beers for me ha ha!

From Sarah Churlish
To Mum and Dad
It’s goot to hear what you’ve been up to at home. I can’t even imagine snow at the moment – it’s baking hot here and getting hotter, not actually burnt yet but I’m developing the t-shirt tan nicely! Charlie 1 was really good. It was amazing to be so close to the people we were building the houses and biogas units for. It makes it so real and even more rewarding. Off to Echo 4 now so I’ll be digging elephant trenches and putting solar fencing up so hopefully I’ll spot an elephant. Yeah it’s a shame about the tigers but they’re notoriously hard to spot in the south so we didn’t expect much really. There was a sign inside the bus saying ‘Animal sightings are purely luck’ so there we go. The food was amazing in the community but now it’s back to trekking food so rice bags and noodles… yum! Looking forward to the fry-ups! Speak to you all soon x x x x

From Sarah Churlish

I’m rocking a great dirt tan that rubs off every night!! Ha ha so I actually need a holiday after this! Plus I’ve been quite ill over the last week, I recovered and then came down with it again, not fun! I did get your letter and energy tables, thank you soo much! I have sent you another letter so hopefully you’ll get it soon. It’s weird knowing I’ve been away from home for so long and I do miss everyone a lot, but I’m home soon so we’ll have to arrange to so something – I think I said in my letter a night in with a takeaway, wine and photos! Thanks for your messages my loves! Hope you are both well. Tomorrow I leave for my last phase so not too long until I see your faces! Lucy – Bristol sounds fab but that was mean to describe the café’s food when the only option I see here is curry! Oh and the milkshake part was in your words ‘ the cherry on the icing on the cake’!! I’m glad you were thinking of me though. Rachel, you are such a doughnut (nom!) I would have suggested asking Lucy for my address but it’s too late to send post to me now. Write me a massive email of pure golden gossip instead! Attach some photos banter too… hilair! I’ll see you in a few weeks hopefully. MISS YOU BOTH, KEEP WRITING! Xxx PS lost 3 kilos yes! Hahaha.

I received your letter yesterday and it made my day! Not to worry, I have recovered from being ill and feel like my energy has been renewed after trekking!! Yes, LOVED dressing in the sari on Echo, surreal experience! They kept trying to put bracelets on us too but most of our wrists are too big! They’re so petite here. I leave for my community phase tomorrow so will write back to you then and fill you in on my experience of trek (nothing like I expected!) and community. I’m in the middle of reading Robby’s  ‘The Killer inside me’ at the moment. Hope Ales gives you a great mother’s day, talk soon x x x

Thanks for your regular blogs and the package! I sent you a card and a very long letter today, I was in a massive rush so please excuse the mess! I tried to cram in as much as possible. I will write again when I settle in on my next phase. I couldn’t send my mother’s day present to you from field base so ignore what I said in the card/letter. I can hopefully send it on my next phase. I’m happy you miss my cooking... I miss my cooking too! I’m excited for my next phase, have great PMs and looking forward to meeting the tribal families and eating their food. I recommend you read the book ‘White tiger@ if you want to know what life is like here, it’s a very popular read. Wish Nan a happy birthday from me and that I’ll be thinking of her. Miss you lots too, not long now! X x x

Farewells, fetes and flippin' frogs!

Hello good readers, hope life is grand. We've all just enjoyed a mega changeover here in India as we got to spend almost three whole days together, which is great as it was the last changeover of expedition, sob sob.

So once everyone had got back to field base from their phase two camps, unpacked and had a bloomin’ good wash, it was time to muster up some fancy dress outfits from nowhere and head off to the 80s disco for a night of prancing and dancing to A-ha and Cyndi Lauper.

L-R Sarah, Ameze, Clare, Caz, Elliott

Back row L-R - Sean, Chloe, Sian, Rachel, Emily
Middle row L-R Ed, Ros (PM), Naomi (PM)
Front row - Anne-Romee, Scott, Lauren and Wieger

Front row L-R - Georgia, Clare, Sophie

Back row L-R - Georgi, Ellie, Laura, Martyn, Guy
Front row L-R - Danielle, Emily

It was a bitter sweet night as some of our venturers were leaving us the next morning as they were only with us for the first two phases. Lauren, Daphne and Karla headed back to Bangalore along with Polly our Logistics Manager. We’re very sad to see them all go and wish them all the best for their next adventures which will hopefully be as fun as the last few weeks, but we doubt it!

The next day saw field base transformed into an English village fate as the graduate venturers planned and hosted a great day for everyone.

Martyn lets out his artistic side doing henna tattoos of his now famous designs.

Sian, Anna and Emily tempt us with some cakes

Felix, Ross and Katy with prizes to be won

Sunil slaving away cooking chicken for over a hundred hungry people. We salute you Sir.

Kate, Naomi, Jen and Becca are the baked potato crew.

Serious concentration taking place during the pub quiz hosted by Jonny Williams and Phil Kay.
After all the fun of the fete, day three of changeover meant it was time to find out where everyone was heading off to for their third and final phase of expedition. So without further ado, let me announce the teams for the last phase of expedition...

Middle row L-R - Karen, Eleri (PM), Danielle, Caz, Lucy, Lottie, Eeva (PM), Becca (PM), Alex
Front row - L-R - James, Rachel

I spoke to all the teams this morning and they’re all settling in well and making the most of the places they’re in and people they’re with. The trekkers have already got a few kilometres under their belts, the diggers in the echo teams started work on the trenches today after setting up their camps, and the community guys also started work on the toilets today after meeting the people in the villages yesterday.

We’ll be heading out to see them on the loops starting tomorrow because we miss them already! We’ll bring you all he gossip from them as we can, along with photographic evidence of how dirty and smelly they are of course.

So that we don’t miss everyone too much here at field base, we’ve been distracting ourselves by digging away at the local school to help them build a new water drainage system. Whilst being watched by monkeys, we managed to dig up a whole family of frogs hidden in the dirt, those frogs follow us EVERYWHERE!

Kat (Photographer) and Mark (Country Director) digging away

Naomi, Kat and I.
Look at those muscles! No, I can't see them either.
Oh and last, but definitely not least, we all want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone that has sponsored us for the 10k run we’ll be doing at the end of expedition. So far you've donated a whopping £505 towards building a house for a tribal village family currently living in a tarpaulin shelter.

It’s an amazing response so we’re all very grateful and I’m keeping the teams posted on whose friends and families are donating. Thanks again, it’s amazing to know that we’re almost half way towards being able to fund the costs of the house.

To see the donations so far or to sponsor us just go here

I have a lot of blog messages from the folks here and will get them posted on here as soon as possible...

Kathryn has a lot more photos from changeover that will soon be uploaded into her albums, the link is at the top of the page on the right.

Bye for now, back soon...

Sunday 13 March 2011

Fun run and familiar faces...

Namaskaara you good people, its changeover morning and we’re busily getting field base ready for the return of the troops. So we’ve warned Betty not to pop round for a few days, asked the mouse that I just found in the bin to go and squeak elsewhere and told the toads that there will soon be hundreds of new (but very stinky) boots for them to hide in.

As well as this exciting news, we also bring you details of a fundraising event we’ll be doing at the end of expedition before the sad farewells begin. Oh dear, can’t even start to think about that yet it’s all going to be too emotional! Sniff sniff...

Right, where was I, oh yes, I remember now – once everyone is back from their final phase at the start of April, we’re all going to be taking part in a 10k run and will be asking for sponsorship to raise money towards an extra project for the next expedition.

We’ll be working with our partner CTRD to build eco-sanitation units in a tribal village called Kotapadi in the Nilgiri Hills, but we would also love to be able to build a house for one of the village families that are currently living in a tarpaulin shelter.

The house will cost 85,000 Indian rupees to build which is the equivalent of about £1,300. So if you know family and friends on expedition or have been here yourself and know how hard it’s going to be then it would be brilliant if you could sponsor us to help us raise the funds we need to help this family.

To sponsor us just head on over to our fundraising page -

It’s going to be around 40 degrees in April and even now just walking 10 yards is enough to make us break out into a sweat so it’s going to be tough, tough, tough. And we’ll be posting all the sweaty photos on here just as soon as the feeling in our legs has returned and we’ve got our breath back.

Two guys that we would love to have running with us in April are Sam Ummat and Dharmendra Patel who provided us with hours of entertainment as explorers but were here for the first phase only. Sadly they left us at the last changeover to head on to new adventures but they managed to find time to fill me on how they felt about their time with us... luckily they had a blast!

Sam, 19 from Reading

I started Raleigh and, to be honest, was a little bit unsure on what it would be like. But looking back on it now it was some of the best three weeks of my life and I wish I could have stayed for all ten! I made soo many amazing friends and saw some things that simply took my breath away and have soo many memories that I’ll remember for the rest of my life!!

It was such a worthwhile experience and I feel that I grew as a person, despite the lack of food and showers!! Thank you so much Raleigh for making it such an amazing experience and will definitely do another project in the future. Thanks!

Dharmendra, 21 from London

I can't believe its already been 8 days since I got back from my 4-week expedition in India! Four weeks at home here in London seems to take forever but with Raleigh, time certainly flies by because you're always having fun.

I chose to do the community phase - Charlie 1. In just three weeks in Vellary Village, my team and I (along with a lot of help from the masons and the locals) managed to build a cow shed, a bio-gas unit and the main structure of a house! The locals that we stayed with in Vellary considered us part of their family. They are such loving people to be with.

They gave us tea and biscuits every day, fed us with delicious spicy meals and even joined us when we had a few dance parties in the evening. When it was our time to leave to get back to field base, the family became very emotional and that made some of us cry a river too. We will all truly miss them and the beautiful, tropical, mountainous village of Vellary.

I've learned so many life skills during my time on Raleigh. How to make a successful camp fire, how to cook using trangias, basic first aid action, how to mix cement using the simplest of tools, how to sustain hygiene using the 3 bowls, how to dig a long drop toilet! The list goes on...

The people at Raleigh, staff and venturers alike, are the friendliest, kindest, most welcoming and most fun people I've ever met in my life! The irony is, now that I'm back home, not being at field base with everyone is making me feel home-sick :( I am missing them all dearly and I can't wait to meet up with some of them when they get back to London. I have made so friends and memories that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. I would definitely recommend Raleigh to anyone interested in taking an exciting journey abroad with amazing people to make a difference.

My advice - if you do chose Raleigh, DO THE FULL 10 WEEKS! :)

Now he’s set me off blubbing again! Thanks so much to those guys for their enthusiasm, hard work, fun and laughter. I know you’re both badly missed here by everyone, and Sam, I miss the messages from your mum Denise!

Right, better start doing some serious training for the run I guess. Just ran away from a dead spider and had a chocolate bar so that’s a pretty good start me thinks...

Three updates for the price of one...

During this phase the lovely Becca from field base has been out and about visiting our far flung teams of Charlie 1, Tango 5 and Tango 6 over in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Here’s an update from how they're all getting on...

Charlie 1 - Big diggers and day trippers

The loop trip started in the beautiful tropical village of Vellary to catch up with the group and Becca found half of them down in the huge 6ft deep hole they'd been digging for the bio-gas dome. The rest of the group were out and about in the village hiding clues for a treasure hunt taking place the next day. PM Dave keep the team entertained in the bottom of the pit they were digging, telling stories as they worked together to shift all the soil from the bottom of the hole and over the top.

The team are camping on the doorstep of one of the families and enjoying their fantastic hospitality and all of the local wildlife and the walks around the stunning tea plantations on their doorstep. As we left them they were about to head out on a day trip to a local tiger safari. We've since heard reports that no tigers were spotted but plenty of peacocks kept them entertained, as well as more of Dave's stories I'm sure.

Becca brings the Raleigh shop essentials to Charlie 1

Martyn, Elliott and Philip digging that HUGE hole.

Sarah and Ellie shifting the soil while Martyn admires something on the ground.

Ellie and Ameze still smiling in the soil.

The team hard at work. L-R Martyn, Dave, Sarah, Georgia, Philip, Ellie, Elliott and Ameze.

Becca with the local children.

The bio-gas cow shed that the groups in both phases have been constructing.

The house that the teams have been working on is coming along nicely.

Tango 5 - Fishing, stretching and trekking

Becca joined the group on a much needed rest day to allow their aches and pains to ease a little. The camp they were staying at for the next two nights had a lovely fishing lake which the team made the most of  despite seeing a four foot long water snake on the way to it. They caught three fish for dinner but disappointingly, weren't able to eat them in the end as the fish started dying too quickly due to a run in with a fertiliser bag, so it was another meal of pasta for them in the end.

Nic, David and Felix catch dinner.

The group were keen to make their bags as light as possible for the remainder of the trek and so once they'd picked out the essential items from the loop's food drop they passed quite a bit of it back along with about 80 litres of personal items that they realised they didn't need after all so hopefully they've been light as a feather for the remainder of the trek and skipped up those peaks.

Sophie, Laura and Flo sort out the group's food.

While Dan (PM), Ross and Sunil investigate what music they're going to listen to while they cook dinner.

The team have been doing their essential exercises each morning before leaving camp.
L-R Dan (PM), Kannan, Nic and Daphne

Nic, Daphne, Flo and Laura stretch it out.

Doing the all important, but not very flattering, hip stretches.
L-R - Daphne, Flo, Laura, Sophie, Becky, David.
As the Tango 5 trek has very little shade along the route, the group have decided to start walking very early in the mornings while it's still dark to avoid the heat as much as possible. So they've seen many an amazing sunrise on their travels and then been able to get to camp a bit earlier in the day to set up.

Everyone has found it a tough challenge but they've been working well together as a group and they all made it to the top of the second highest peak in India together on the second day, nice work guys! We look forward to hearing more of their tales when they're back at field base in a few day

T5 before heading out of the camp very early that morning, so some people were still feeling a little camera shy.
Back row - L-R - Kannan, Eleri (PM), Ross, Felix, David, Louisa, Sunil, Becky, Sophie, Nic and Katy
Front row L-R - Laura, Daphne, Flo, Dan (PM), Book.

Tango 6  - The adventures of Spider-Man and his sixteen sidekicks.

The group have now followed their blow up spiderman mascot for over two weeks of tough but hugely  rewarding trekking, cycling and rafting for their phase two adventure. For the rafting day they split into four teams and raced to the other side, with spiderman with them of course!

Team spiderman (named after the mascot I'm guessing) rafted their way to victory but all enjoyed the day despite their face paints smudging the minute they got into the water.

The winning team Spiderman - Chloe, Anne-Romee, Ed and Polly (PM)

Team Pirates - Stu (PM), Sean, Scott and Rachel

Team Kiss - Sian, Holly, Wieger and Lauren

Team tigers - Emily, Sam, Naomi, Chris

Possibly one of the reasons why team pirates didn't win - Sean, Rachel, Scott,

There was also a tense moment at camp one night when Stu (PM) returned from their homemade long drop in a genuine panic (and not one of his usual pranks!) as he'd seen an elephant in there. After further inspection and a few nervous minutes for Stu, it turned out to be the smallest of calves wandering through the bushes. I can still hear the group taking the mic out of Stu from here!

Due to the air being a bit damp at night in Kerala, the trekkers have had to come up with different ways of trying to get their rarely clean clothes dry, so they've tried everything from holding pants over the fire to starting a sock spinning disco.

The team taking a break at the heart shaped lake which they saw on the way up the Chembra peak.

Taking a quick break during the cycling.

The group all made it to the top of Amba together
Back row L-R - Sam, Sian, Anne-Romee, Chris, Polly (PM), Wieger, Chloe, Scott, Sean
Middle row - Stu (PM), Emily, Holly, Ed, Rachel, Lauren
Front row - Naomi

Another day, another peak - the team at the top of Kurisumala
Back row - Rachel, Scott, Ed, Chris, Wieger
Middle row - Sean, Scott, Lauren, Chloe, Sian, Chloe, Holly
Front row - Naomi (PM), Polly (PM), Sam, Anne-Romee

Sean gets the group into shape.

They're all now enjoying their last few days on this phase before heading back here to field base for changeover on Sunday 13th so we can't wait to hear that first bus to pull in to see them all again.

If you want to see more photos of the other groups then you can see all of Kathryn's photos here - https://picasaweb.google.com/kgeels and there's always a link to these in the top right corner of the blog.

In other news, Betty the calf is still a regular here although her buddy Eddie the egret Edwards hasn’t been with her for a while, so we think he’s off doing a guest appearance on Question of Sport maybe...

Thanks again for the messages that people have sent in about the blog, we’re so glad you’re enjoying it. There’s a lot of work on for everyone this phase so we’ve not been able to update it as regularly as before so apologies for this but we’re still trying to get all the news out to you as quickly as we can. Oh and a note to Steve Churlish - thanks for the note, made my day! No mars bars would be needed should we ever meet, a single chocolate hob-nob would suffice.

Here's the messages that the groups have sent back...

Hey guys, sorry ain’t been able to blog for a while, been busy! Finished the community phase now, built 15 toilets. I’m on trek now, climbed the second highest mountain in south India and survived! (just about!) I struggled a bit due to over packing my bag but gonna reduce the weight now by giving some of my stuff back to Raleigh to take away so I should fly along now. Loving all your messages, can’t wit to show you guys the pictures of the amazing views we’ve seen!

To The Povey’s and the Conquests
Hi Everyone! Hope you are well at home. Really enjoying myself out here! As you have probably seen, I’ve finished Echo 4 and have been out here for over a month now! Seems to have gone so quickly. We managed to dig 500m of trenches and then put up the solar fencing as well which was a great achievement and all the local villagers showed up on the last day to give us flowers and thank us which was brilliant. Now I’m trekking (Tango 5) and have been going for about 7 days now after a 12 hour then 4 hour bus journey in 2 days. We climbed the second highest mountain n Southern India on our second day (which is more than twice the height of Ben Nevis) but unfortunately our view was blocked by cloud and our descent marred by lots of rain and cold weather! But it was worth it! All the other days have been beautiful and some of the views are absolutely stunning (all being in the Western Ghats of Kerala). Rest day today and so we have stocked up on chocolate and coke which we’ve all missed! Say hi to everyone at home for me (including the dogs) and keep checking the blog and thanks very much for all the messages; it’s really nice to know you’re all watching. Also I hope you had a good birthday Louise!
Love you all, Ross

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve blogged, I haven’t had the chance! Hope you receive my letter soon, it only took me four hours! I’m on trek now and I’ve found it pretty hard so far but think i’m slowly adapting to it. Today has been our rest day so have had the chance to wash clothes (they stink of stale vegetables) and myself which has been nice! I’m going to write you all another letter when I get back to field base. Still haven’t received Lucy or Sammie’s. Remember you can’t send me any post in the last 3 weeks so just continue blogging.

Loved your last blog message, sorry I haven’t had a chance to write back sooner, everything has been so hectic on trek. I hope you got your last essay complete, I prayed that you wouldn’t leave it til the last minute but I’m guessing you did. Oh babe, every time I moisturise I think of you, but don’t worry about the make-up side there’s never any time to put any on!! I have a zillion mosquito bites at the moment and the more I scratch the more I realise than my supposed tan is just pure dirt! Please write to me soon with all the details about Bristol...haven’t received your other letter yet but hopefully when i get back to field base. I’m going to write you a letter anyway. Remember not to send me any post in the last 3 weeks! We climbed the second highest mountain in southern India a few days ago, very painful. Can’t wait to hear from you again x x x x

I will keep it short as we are relatively in touch now. Climbed three peaks on trek. Amazing views and we had a nice rest day today. Over 400 pictures so far so journal is not really needed/not enough time. Saw a huge snake today must have been 2-3m long. Also caught a fish and a crab. Don’t mean to brag but only one to manage it out of our group, especially with a seasoned fisher. Football results are always great and hope you have managed to sort out the ipod. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to ring you before I went on phase but things have been so hectic around here. I have been put on the trekking phase and at first was a bit disappointed but really I’m loving it and seeing so many amazing things. Anyway, I will be able to ring at changeover. Can’t wait to hear how things are at home.

Hi Lettuce! Just got your message about Thailand, ‘YEAH BABY!’. Amazing news, can’t wait to see you! Hope work is exciting, have you met anyone famous yet? The trek is going really well, writing this message from our rest day campsite, Chatarangapura (you can say THAT again!) Seen two snakes but no big spiders. The scenery is brilliant – could see Tamil Nadu from the top of a massive ridge yesterday, not too injured so far, fingers crossed for the rest of the time! Miss you lots, love you! x x x maoam x x x
