Hannah, Lou and Maz on loop to Charlie 2 and Echo 3…
After an exciting journey through national parks and having a tiger run in front of the Bravo (!), we arrived to find Charlie 2 enjoying a day off in the neighbouring village. We joined in for a cup of chai and then followed a convoy of tuk-tuks back to camp. We were given a tour of the beautiful camp at the home of one of the beneficiaries, which was set on a hill with amazing views over banana plantations. After a delicious home cooked dinner from the family, we settled into a pretty tense game of ‘mafia’. After porridge the next day, Maz and Lou took Maya and Steph to visit a previous biogas project, and I went to work the rest of the group at biogas site two.
It was a hot morning of carrying sand and cement, sifting the sand and laying bricks for the cowshed. It was hard work, but helped with several chai breaks and the family joining in. Later that day, I joined Lisa and the boys (Andy, Aaron and Matt) who showed me the huge hole they had started, and how to dig!
That evening we were treated to an amazing three course meal cooked by the group then it was off to our tents. The next day we woke bright and early to go to the local church (at the end of the path) It was a packed service. Everyone was very welcoming and it was interesting to get an insight into a different aspect of the culture.
Echo 3
It was a long hot drive to Echo 3, but we were rewarded by a friendly welcome by the group, and a lovely refreshing swim in the reservoir. Later, we were treated to a delicious meal cooked by Lavinia, and then I got to experience sleeping under the stars in a basha!
Waking the next morning to a breath-taking view of mist over the water and the sun breaking through the trees was a great start to day. Lou and Maz left early with Lukas and Jamie for some M&E, while I joined the others for some biogas work. The 20min walk to site was stunning, and along the way plenty of children ran out to say hi, and I got to meet the group’s adopted puppy that lives with a local family.
Work at the biogas site was in really good progress. We practiced our ‘Raleigh chain’ to move bricks, helped along by the family’s children and lots of singing from Lavinia and Veerie. After an hour or so of work we got given an amazing (second) breakfast of dosa and coconut chutney cooked up by the family, then it was back to work. The boys arrived back in the afternoon, and we all helped at the next site, where the dome of the biogas unit was being lined with bricks and cement and a dome was being constructed out of bamboo.
Back at camp there was just time for a quick dip before PMs Rachel and Jonny cooked up a wonderful dinner and, as a special treat, Hannah and Tita had prepared an amazing banoffi pie.
It turned out there were more surprises in store for us, as Lukas and Jamie led us down to the banks of the reservoir in the dark, and produced handmade coconut shell candle boats to float in the water, while the group then huddled together and sang us a song.
Back at camp the group taught us a new exciting game before we spent our last night under the stars. Waking early the next day for our journey back to fieldbase, we all agreed what a lovely loop it had been.

To Maya Obstfeld in charlie 2: Hello again dear daughter! It was so wonderful to actually talk to you -- you felt so near (and dear) and it was so reassuring to know that you are your old self even though you are so far away and experiencing so much that is new. Thanksgiving soon! Starting to shop today. I'm writing a letter to tell you all about Mushkee's wedding. Haley is at her height of fluffy cuteness. We are going to see Paula Poundstone -- the funny one from "wait, wait..." tonight- I'm ready for some laughs! Missed you being in the photos of "Charlie 2" -- the blog said that you went to visit another biogas project? Looks like very hard work! Make you long for the taping and sheetrocking days of New Orleans? Love you so much -- I'm writing a letter soon!! xxxxx mom

ReplyDeleteHope all is well and you're still enjoying life in India. How are you getting on without your coke? Have you got into the chai? Saw your mum today - she was so gutted to have missed your call. Sandra & Chris are staying with us for a few weeks while Chris gets a stair-lift installed and the house decorated. He's cooking tea every night - I told him they can stay forever! Alex seems to be having a great time in Hong Kong - working hard & playing harder! She's sharing a flat with another teacher & they seem to be getting on really well. She may be on the other side of the world but at least she can keep in contact easily. Keep up the hard work. Can't believe you're already more than half-way through. Makes Christmas seem even closer! Lots of love from us all. Ruth Richard & the Pontypool gang xxx
Wow, you guys are so lucky for seeing a tiger, never saw one in all the 5 months I was there! Tim x

I'm sorry that Hong Kong came as a shock to you. You should have known I wouldn't have been around at home for much longer. Once you get back from India I bet you would have developed the traveling bug too! Thanks for the facebook message though It was good to hear from you.
Hong Kong is amazing, I've met so many lovely people. Job is going well so far. I have hardly any students because I am a new teacher so I spend my days reading Dahl books..can't be bad!
Continue to enjoy and make the most of it whilst you're there. Mum and Sandra said they tried to message the other day but couldn't get it to work but everything is good at home :)
Lots of love,

ReplyDeleteHi Matt, Mum Here. It was so good to hear your voice the other morning, hope you got my email. We got a few more pictures through yesterday, and You've got the biggest smile in all of them, it loks like you're having a great time. In case you didn't get the email, to delay your return would cost £13O PLUS any increase in ticket price, which could be a lot in the run up to Christmas. I'm counting down the weeks till you get back, can't wait to have all your stuff around the house again! I'm really proud of what you're doing and missing you loads. Enjoy your last project, and looking forward to seeing you again.

Hallo Lukas Echo 3,

ReplyDeleteYou will be home in a week Meem. Bet you can not wait to finally take a shower and have some proper food (good old shepherds pie is missing you)
I did get really drunk on friday (what a surprise) but the funny thing is that your dear father did get wasted as well. He was hilarious, he was so drunk that he couldn't even have a massage with Jane.
Me and Harrie are fine, we are either loving each other or really annoyed with each other. But what can I say, that's just love isn't it.
Marley still smells and farts a lot. So there's nothing new here really (apart from the things I have to tell you in person of course!!)
Can not wait until you're back and we finally can go out again and eat carrot cake. I still have the finnish bottle of vodka from Jessica which will have to be destroyed!
Hope all is good and I'll be seeing you soon!

For Albertine Potter van Loon, Echo 4.

Message for Alex Rolfe (not sure which team but he's the one with the unmistakably big nose - Goliath's big brother etc...).
ReplyDeleteSorry I missed you the other day. Mum did call me but I was stuck in a meeting. Nothing much changes here!
Your Nan is doing OK now - gradually recovering and Caroline is spending a lot of time looking after her. Not to worry.
In the news; Europe is still in meltdown. Greece and Italy are in a horrendous crisis and the Germans and the French are just about at the end of their rope. WW3 looms on the horizon - Not to worry.
Worry. Palace have dropped to 9th, lost one of their star players and went down 3-0 to Leicester at the weekend having been 10 hours without conceding a goal before that. I predict the relegation zone by Boxing day.
Mum's now into proper planning for the house - even I'm getting excited about it now.
Your uncle Mick is buying the old Rolfe house in Eglise Rd - so I'm hoping my collection of exotic books is still under the bed.
Enough for now. Sounds like your having a great time and fast becoming native. Concerned that you might start gigging large holes in the garden when you get back.
Take care,
Dad
P.S. I found my sandals so I apologies for accusing you of theiving them!
Yo pearcey boy! Its Barnard! We miss your features! Hope you're having a belter, id like to say you've missed loads but you know nothing changes here. Gonna miss you during Christmas and new year buddy, nobody partys like you! Send us postal address so we can send Xmas cards. Love ya man. Ads

ReplyDeleteHiya hun! I've finally got internet at my new apartment so have been frantically catching up with the blog. I can't make out if the third phase for you is a demon trek or environmental project? Surely you've already done your fair share of trekking! I'm very impressed with your digging skills as on the pics, I'm sure you're working hard. Everything is fine here, work is the same really and am madly applying for other things! I'm loving your facebook messages, they make me smile so much to hear from you. It feels like you've been gone for ages, really missing you now. There was a documentary on about India the other night and I went for a curry on Sunday so was telling everyone who would listen about you and how amazing you are! :) i can't wait for you to come for tea when you get back, i'll make waffle butties and everything. I wonder if you'll be sick of curry or addicted to the stuff by the time you return. You're looking rather slim on your pics, even more so than normal.. i hope you're eating well, I do worry you know xx my letter is coming along nicely so won't say too much here or I'll just be repeating myself. I love you lots and miss you millions! Xxxx

Dikke kvp!!!

ReplyDeleteHi love!!! Wow, I looked through the blog and saw you in pictures, you look absolutely happy. I am so sure you are enjoying yourself so much. You won a skit! Well your team did, didn't it? You totally would. I bet you it was really funny. So it's sunday afternoon here, and Im supposed to be writing this 2000 word essay on Rousseau, and I haven't even started. Guess what it reminded me of? Our king lear essay with Mr.Rutherford that we did in one night. When we went out to do pizza run and ended up getting fries and milkshakes and jagger shots... hahahahahaha but we finished it! and we got like at least a B right? I don't even remember. But yeah, I just wish we could go back to those times so badly! I miss Ms T so much, the other day I was thinking of how much she actually must have loved us. Like we didn't care if we got in trouble at all with her, and I think she was the slackest with us two. But anyways, this is my last week of school of my first semester in universitaaaay, and to be honest, I'm already dying with work. Hhaha I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's so true. Like never in my life had I had to actually work for school.. and like I could slack off and everything and still get 70's but.. i don't know, its university, i don't want to have all 70s in university. CHAKNOW?! So I get to see Simeon in two weeks, I told you right? We're going to Seattle for a weekend. It'll be lots of fun, I'm sure. Especially after this past week.. it was tough meng, we were fighting a lot and i just wanted you to be there to shkype wifff meeee! But anyways, I better stop slacking hahahahaha and get this essay started!! which is so ironic cause IM TOTALLY gonna get less than 70 on it. But anyways. I love you so much, and I am so jealous of all your adventures. I can't wait to hear all about them.

I hope the kids there are as friendly as you are! and I hope you guys really look out for each other. I imagine its a really well organized program. but I am sure that yo uget into some ridiculously awesome badass adventure stuff that requires premium teamwork to overcome obstacles before you... :-p
Look poopsie, to make a long story short, If this "Raleigh" program, is as what we get from the site, then I am sure that you are having the time of your life! you are missed SOO Much, I cant wait to see you, and you already know, no need to get started...but Mariana really misses you too and she cant wait to come VISIT US WHAAA FRAAAA!
