Little Doctors

A wee guest blog from fieldbase Medic Maggie!

Raleigh has been making regular visits to the local school in Jayapura for just over a year. We’ve been recruiting and teaching ‘Little Doctors’ about health and hygiene skills. The ‘Little Doctors’ can then pass on their new skills to their classmates and family.
Lou and Maggie off to find some Little Doctors

Louise, Hannah and I visited the school earlier this week and were met by an enthusiastic Maths teacher, who had been at the same school for 20 years and involved in Little Doctors from the start. We started off the session with a bit of a recap and quickly discovered that, thanks to previous teaching sessions, the children were all experts already at the seven stages of effective hand washing, teeth brushing and how bacteria can cause disease.

Lots of eager students
After our revision session, we went outside and introduced the children to some famous Raleigh energiser games. They then taught us a few new games to add to our extending repertoire!
A few games

During the second half of the teaching session, I taught the children how to treat cuts, scrapes and burns and how to keep an eye out for signs of infection.  At the end, we had a little question and answer session about general medical problems, what we did at Raleigh and what life was like in the UK.

We then gave out a toothbrush and some toothpaste to each ‘little doctor’.  We left the school really impressed at how bright the kids were, and looking forward to returning later in the phase with some new and exciting material!

  4. Hi Meg in Charlie 2,
It was abs. fantastic to hear you yesterday, I was just so gutted I didn't get to speak to you, but at least we can keep playing your message. We tried to call back, but the phones wouldn't allow it. I'm blaming Murphy - told you we should have changed his name LOL. Longing to hear all about what you have been doing - just as well you are not straight back to work on return!!By our reckoning there are at least 3 letters en route to you. I've spoken to Alex twice on F/B since you sent your message. She says don't worry- have an amazing time and catch up on Skype when you get back. Really looking forward to the next blog now, both of us are keeping very busy and there'll be another message very soon. All our love, take care and continue having a brilliant time.
Hugs and kisses, Mum & Dad xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  5. Hallo Esmee,

  10. For Zoe Coles, Tango 5

    Hi Zoe,
Don't seem to have heard any news for a while, hope everything is o.k. on the trek. Not long now before you're home! We are counting the days, but expect you will have mixed feelings about leaving India and your friends there. We are so proud of you and everyone is constantly asking how you are getting on. Gordon and Karin are back in France now and next week Geoff and Jan are arriving, to go to the concert with us.Taid has been looking at his family tree and has found a new name for Alun and Gemma's baby, wait for it.............. Zorobabel, Taid's great great uncle, so on reflection, Eric doesn't sound too bad! Christmas is in full swing now, panto tickets booked (Sleeping Beauty)and about to book the meal for Boxing Day. That's all for now, we keep logging on to see if there is any more news of you on your trek. See you soon! We miss you. Lots and lots of love, Nanna and Taid

Dikke dikke kus,
    Mam x
