GUEST BLOG BY JOSSE EMANUEL
On Thursday morning three lucky fieldbase team members (Polly B, Hannah and I) headed out to check out the progress on Charlie two. It was particularly exciting for me as I was keen to see how things had progressed from the last phase in Hagaranahalli.
As soon as we arrived, we headed straight to the village primary school to see locum supply teachers Kate, Isabel and Lucy taking the equivalent year 4 class. They taught an amazing lesson on based on the health and hygiene syllabus created last phase on why, when and how to wash hands. The lesson was a good mix of interactive fun games with some educational stuff, which definitely got picked up despite the communication barrier of language.
After school, we joined in the daily chai (with ginger) break, and got some time to appreciate the winter wonderland created by the team, complete with Christmas tree, cards, decorations and a beautifully home crafted advent calendar. It was a quick break though and it wasn’t long before day leader (Sarah) motivated the team back to work.
We were taken on a tour around the village. It was great to see the 12 toilets built last phase in use (well not literally), and that the new 12 toilets are making great progress with the majority at the critical ‘1m brick height’, meaning that they are well on track to finish exactly on time for the closing ceremony.
After lunch we left them, happily learning skills in brick packing/laying, plastering and concrete mixing, looking forward to the Michel inspired ‘Sinterklass’ celebration which they are eagerly awaiting on 5th December…

ReplyDeleteWait what? You can build stuff now? Maybe that dream of a lighthouse is not so far away after all...
Since my last message I have been a booking machine. We now have flights from Bangalore to Calcutta and then from Calcutta to Bagdogra where we can get buses/trains/taxis to Darjeeling for the 23rd. Might be some impromptu floor sleeping on the way but I absolutely promise you it will be worth it when we get to Darjeeling.
Work is getting even more thrilling *cough* as we head towards Christmas. I'm now invigilating sveral exams which sounds important but actually means I sit in a really warm room and try not to fall asleep for an hour and a half. Fun times.
Did I tell you I got your letter? The later one arrived first so I now have no hopes of my last letter ever actually reaching you... To sum it up-
Some teachers inexplicably hate TA's and one of them was a right bitch to me.
It is ridiculously cold here. I now own a bodywarmer.
I miss you.

ReplyDeleteYour mom and I are very concerned that you get some mail from us. Of course we miss you very much and all the parental affectionate stuff.
The three week black-out is tough going. You should let us know when you come off of it and that you are well.
Your mom is healing nicely and she and I plan on seeing a dress rehearsal of Alvin Ailey this Friday.
Laila is doing well. She seems to be gaining weight, muscle weight but is frisky and playful as ever; whinny as usual.
Now that I know how to blog you will show Mimi and you should be getting more mail.
Luv you, miss you.

ReplyDeleteHallo Isabelle,
Dikke zoen, Pap
