Sorry it's been a while for an update but there's been around the clock work for the expedition magazine which is now almost at printing stage!
All the groups are getting on fabulously. Charlie 3 in the village of Hosaheggudilu have not only been... you guessed it... digging, but have also been busy teaching the children some English, art and sport in the school-cum-living accomodation for the group, which was very well received by the villagers.
The bunds and trenches are coming along well and they get a treat for all their hard work today as they're taking a rest day and a trip out to visit the villages of Halsur, which was the base of a project in the previous phase, and Netikalhundi which was a project for 09I. They also get the chance to take a cooling dip/wash in a nearby water channel.
The group outside one of the village's very colourful houses

One of the village kids
Both trekking groups are making the most of the dry weather and are making excellent time each day. Tomorrow is cross over day and their rest day so both groups should get the chance to mingle, swap trekking stories and compare blisters over the fire at the campsite they will share for the night. Tango 6 will also be celebrating John Emmerson's birthday today.
Adam (The King of India) from head office has left his trekking adventure with Tango 7 and will soon be arriving at the Echo 4 camp, along with Neil (who we at fieldbase like to call teaboy!), where they are all looking forward to seeing them. And we've just received a phone call saying there is an elephant happily standing at the water pump ready to greet them both!
The group had a trip out to HD Kote yesterday and they had a birthday to celebrate today as James Gurney is turning 22. Happy birthday from fieldbase to both John and James!
The school at Charlie 1 is in the final construction stages and they're mixing their hard physical tasks with some lighter work such as painting. We're all gearing up to the school's opening ceremony towards the end of this phase which should be an emotional occasion for everyone involved in its construction and for the people of Muttimoola.
So after that round up it just leaves some messages from the venturers:
Georgie Page would like to say thanks to everyone from home who sent birthday cards, it was great to read them all. She had a great birthday! x
Davina would also like to wish her Dad, Tom, a very happy 60th birthday. And best wishes from all of us here at fieldbase. x
Hi Marina
Happy Birthday for the 16th, hope you have a fantastic day. All my love to you and Oliver.
Tina x
To The Badens,
Thank you for your message, you should receive some letters soon. Having a great time in Halsur.
Love Tina x
To Libby, hey ya hun I can’t receive any messages till I finish trek on Dec 13th. Not long left.
Rwarr x Crimbo
To Juliet Prodger
Hey same sort of thing I said to Libby x Crimbo. Things are fine, new group again – Tango 6.
To Juliette and Ben
Having a good time. How’s everyone i.e. Smurf, Sam R, John and Dale? Can you find out? Missing everyone. If you and Libby send another letter I will receive it but don’t send it after 20th Nov. Missing all, Crimbo.
Libby
Be careful what you send on the blog though because it won’t get through the filter. Missing you lots spiderman yer, jammy stain dippings, rwarries. Anyway write a letter I can’t wait to hear from you xx Glad you got the letter xxx Crim
To Johnny
You out there, can’t hear you, spiderman where are you? Miss you lots, any funny sorties? Have you done it yet? x chris x
Hey Dan,
Got your letter today – woohoo! Hope you’re still good. Almost finished the trek – it’s been a slog but we’ve had a real laugh! Eaten so much! Back in fieldbase on 23rd – speak to you then!
With love, Frankie xxx
Hello Marr Family!
Thanks for the blogs and letters – got them today. Especially loved Becky’s card! The trek has been tough but we’ve done it now and have 2 days of rafting to look forward to at the end. Have had no more leeches on my face but several hundred have attacked my boots in vain! Thinking of you all, love Frances in a tired but happy Tango 7! Xxx
Hi Mum, Dad, Lindsey & Chris
Sorry for delay – only just got the blog. Glad you had a great time in the Peaks – sounds awesome! Having a great trek although it’s rained a lot! Boxer shorts got soaked through one night so I dropped my trousers and dried my boxers on the fire whilst wearing them. When in Rome…! Have loads of photos. The trek is over now, just 2 days of rafting left, which will be great. Slept out under the stars last night. Glad you received the card as well and I hope you had a great day, lots of love
Matthew xxx
Hey Kate
Good luck with Faustus! It will be great! Save me a hoody please (and a poster). Hope terms going well and Chris isn’t too scarred from the house party! Trek has been great and tiring and wet. Have had some great food from cafes on the roadsides; parotha, chai and a white mango, going a bit green even?! Boxers on previous post to Mum & Dad. Have been keeping busy – planning our skit, building shrines to ganesh (have been given a little statue) etc. (I am now carving a spoon – hopefully!) Sleeping outside in shelters/random houses is a highlight. Keep me posted about everything.
Lots of Love and Hugs
Matt xxx
To Richard Drax
Hey Dad thanks for your message. No one has been assigned for the wake up call and with regards to the beer – no drink allowed! Say hi to Tash and James for me as well! Just finished the trekking phase (over 200k’s) with a very heavy bag! My trousers are now about ten sizes too big and this phase has definitely been both a challenge and a lot of fun at the same time! Sorry about the picture – I’d just finished my ciggy! Met lots of nice people and still having a great time. Definitely in need of some meat when I get home though as a lot of Inida is veggie! Killer!!!
Love Tobs xx
To Tamara Drax
Hey Bara, thanks so much for your message really appreciate it! Send my love to porge as well! Just about finished my trekking phase and have to build a raft out of bamboo tomorrow as we have two days rafting! Seen lots of wicked places and been on some interesting bus journeys! Food is not as bad now and doesn’t blow my head off quite as much as it did originally and I’m having a great time. Has been hard work and have lost a lot of weight judging by how loose my trousers are now! Hope the toons good and all’s well with you! Loads of love and see you at Christmas for a crazy one!! Xx
Hey Holly,
I just got both your letters today which was really cool can’t wait to see you on the 17th! Bit concerned about how you are feeling couldn’t read the word on the first letter and I’m looking forward to the shoe shopping. You are going to have to keep guessing what the pressie is
Love you loads, Jamie E xxxxx
Hiya Mum and Dad,
I’ve just finised the trekking today only got the rafting left now. It felt awesome to finish it. It is not the same having bad weather but being indoors still we have been rather lucky it has dried up or rather stopped raining constantly. I have put weight on during the trek. I would prefer not to have a haircut when I get back due to mu hair not growing quickly. So how it the work in the garden going? How is the fitness age coming with the Wii fit?
Love Jamie E xxxxx
P.s. no crocs in the river.
Hi to the Oakes Family,
Thank you for your blog comments the other day. I’m on the mend and Mum they’re nothing on your ice pops but I’ve managed to wangle a few ice lollies as a reminder of home comforts. Hopefully, I’ll be back on my feet again soon and able to head out the Hosaheggudilu to finish the project with the rest of the group. I’m glad to hear that the Wimpenny’s received my letter and that you will soon be reading it – I also received a letter from you and one from Jenni & Daniel a few days ago which was really nice. Don’t worry I’m being looked after very well and I’m sure you’ll be kept up to date with my progress.
Looking forward to seeing you all at Christmas, love to all,
Mads

Your bedroom is nearly finished, it is pink, Douglas and Farran helped to chose colours and put the finishing touches, they would make good interior designers. (it's a bit frilly and girly)they are a bit nervous about it so be kind,
Love you very much

Hi Ben - Dad here. Good to see some new pictures of the teams and you and your Charlie 3 group. Sounds like you are having a good mix of work on the project and play with the village children. Have you done some drawings for them I wonder. I see you are wearing gloves and hope that you do not have too many blisters. I will save some hard work for you in the garden so that you don't get withdrawal symptoms when you are home!!
ReplyDeleteAll ok here.Mum out at a meeting so just cooked my dinner and washed up.
Maximise your last 2 weeks and keep well. See you soon love Dad
Hi Ben, just seen the update and photos, ooh lovely! You look really well and great to read about what you have all been doing. Enjoy the final couple of weeks - I am sure that you will. Looking forward to seeing you. lots of love mum xxxx
ReplyDeleteHi James E,
ReplyDeleteI know you are in Mutilmoola with CHARLIE 1...so the adventure phase must have gone ok. You must be glad to have a little respite from carrying that load on your back.
The next two weeks will fly by,make the most of it and enjoy working with the children as I know you will.
Haircut appointment is cancelled!
Holly can't access the Raleigh Blog but I have been sending your msg to her via email.
Dad has religeously stuck with the Wii...I am just trying to keep up...and Caleigh is sleeping through it all!
I helped Dad clear the stream (no leeches..thank god!) and we are not having much luck burning the leaves because of the rain. It is the wettest November on record and it certainly is justifiable calling it a mini monsoon but the temperature is still quite mild for this time of the year so it won't be such a great big shock for you on your return. You will have a well earned deserved rest on holiday.
Everyone is fine..Dale is beavering away for his maths re-sit, Sean has completed his first term at Oxford, Max is so excited as he is going to a Christmas concert in O2...Danny may get a job in John Lewis(will know more when you are back)and all the girls are busy shopping, propping up the economy!!
Can't wait to see you again.
Take care and we will be at the airport.
Mum

For Jamie Green (How many Jameses are with your group, anyway--seems like ten...) Just got your letter of Nov 7th. (It's December 3rd.) Your news was a bit stale (though good detail in there about your work) but still thrilling to see your (illegible) handwriting! Sorry we haven't sent any physical paper your way--seems blogging must suffice and easier to read as well. Also just got your email. Totally cool you climbed tall mountain--sorry about food. However, at least you like ramen! Or did. Only two weeks to go--can't wait to see you!! More later--love, Mom

Knus Far
Hi Tina
ReplyDeletesent you a message on the 1st but it doesn't seem to be here!
Its the Christmas countdown, hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you receved my advent calender, took me ages to make. I filmed the carol service at St James Church last night, it was really lovely and the children sang beautifully. It's our Christmas Fair tomorrow, I'm on the Santa's Chimney stall with my little Elf Helper George.
Tomorrow night I'm out with the Girls to the Bella Vista so I might not be too well on Sunday. Neil needs to know what time and date you come home so if you could e-mail him it would help. I hope all's well with you, not long left so enjoy every moment, got to go now some of us have to go to work you know.
lots of love all at number 9 XXXXXXXXX
Hi Holly,
ReplyDeleteYour mum phoned Jill last night and gave her this web address (actually Jill mis-spelt it so I have just been reading about the exploits of a rally driver from India called Chandan Bhatia. Anyway it looks like you are doing some good stuff out there the sunshine certainly looks appealing from a cold and wet England. We are all fine and hope you are too. It would be great to see you sometime when you get back to hear some of your tales. All the best for now and Love from The Dyers.
Hi Maddy
ReplyDeleteHope that this message finds you feeling much better? Not long now before we see you back home - looking forward to it!! I am off work today heading to Manchester with Michelle, Irene and Jane doing some shopping, visiting the German Markets to sample the Gluvine then onto Dimitri's for a meal. Jane has booked us a room in Cliff Richards hotel and then back home tomorrow afternoon. Barrisle are having their Christmas Fair on Sunday, so Gran and I are going over to help, it should be fun.
Caddy was given a bone last night whilst we were out at the gym Christmas do and this morning we see that she has been trying to dig a hole in the shale there are stones everywhere! Dad will have to clean that up!!
Jenny may have told you but she has a job interview on Monday for a senior post at the hospital, so fingers crossed and will keep you posted! Have sent a previous message and one for Gran H but haven't seen it in the blog, so we have been trying to keep in touch but maybe pressed the wrong buttons!
Anyway I need to pack my bag and catch the train, take care and will let you know how Manchester is/was. All our love Mum Dad and Co xxxxx
On va réviser ce we ! There are many teacher-related pieces of gossip. Looking forward to filling you in. Your friends, Freya, Flick etc were there too. Being their usual relatively sober selves. ReplyDeleteNot long till your home so thought i should update you with events here. Since you've been away Tony (Freddie Roach) Sellars has had me in training for the Athens rematch. I can feel you quaking in your boots! You sure you want to come home! Counting down the days till you get beat! Enjoy your last couple of weeks sprout!

ReplyDeleteGreat to see working the soil; you can come and help on the allotment next time you're here. We have enjoyed hearing about your time in India and we are looking forward to seeing you at Christmas. It's not long now! Love From the Davis Family.
Hi Tina
ReplyDeleteHow are you? okay I hope. Went Xmas shopping yesterday, town was packed , it was the Christmas parade with Santa and his reindeer, yes real reindeer!!! It was all very exciting seeing Santa, by the way you've got a Christmas card from him and so did Ste.
Saturday night at the Bella Vista was okay, not that riveting, I'm shattered at the moment as work is so busy so I didn't stay that long.
Put the tree up yesterday, Mojo's wasn't too sure what was going on and Tilly hid in the bed.
I had my hair cut on Saturday but it's not too short, we are going to the Village in Bury for our night out at work on Friday so I'm on a desperate diet yet again. Don't forget to let Neil know the details for when you come home if you can. Going now, things to do,
love you and miss you

Hello James
ReplyDeleteI thought I would write to you on the blog as letters will take too long to get to you now. We are all well here and thinking of you. I hope you will be able to finish your task before the official opening on 13th. What a wonderful feeling for you all after working so hard to see all your efforts go to good use. The projects all seem so worthwhile and I am sure they will be very much appreciated.
Tom has the day off today so we are off to look at flats for him. Lucy has a mock GCSE so she has been busy revising. Most of them are after Christmas so she will be busy during the holidays! I am sure you will be glad to chill out on your return. We are all so excited thinking about you coming home. We are counting the days down.Lucy breaks up from school on that day so she is thrilled.
Anyway make the most of every day as I know you will have done. You will treasure all your memories of such a fantastic experience.

Just to update you on the rugby news: Worcester are doing their usual floating around near the bottom of the table having achieved an amazing three draws on the trot with not one try!! Got some beers/cider chilling in the fridge for when u get back(in my new crib)!! See you next week old boy!! Tom
Hi Luke

FOR MORTEN

ReplyDeleteI am in Accra but have just skyped home and all is well. Mum has started Xmas cards. Abbie met Ollie at the Spectrum and Charlie had a birthday weekend in Wiltshire. Xmas is looming and we are all looking forward to you being there with us again. Keep having fun though. All our love Dad XXX

Hi Tina
ReplyDeleteSte rang last week and he read me the letter you sent home, you sound to be working hard but enjoying every minute and the trek sounded amazing I'm so jealous but very proud of what your doing and achieving. Seen all your great photo's and you will be glad to know that the hair fashion now is for curly hair, so you will be bang on trend when you get home. Talking of home, now I know why I haven't heard from your mum just read your blog from her, all these nights out, no wonder she's on a diet and what's all that about a card from "SANTA" and "REINDEERS" in Town (too much pop I think) Ha Ha. Ian's just come in from work and he say's Hi and hopes your not getting to used to the hot weather (he's jealous as well) but remember to have something warm that you can wear on the plane as it will feel freezing on the way home. Anyway enjoy the rest of your time and don't forget photo's photo's and more photo's. All our love Elaine Ian and Lucy XXXX
ps yes we did have reindeers in town
Hi Dr Amy H--lying here with the dogs and the papers and watching the rain and thinking of you--digging your heffalump traps--hiding from tigers--fording raging torrents and battling with beserker caterpillars and painting and building anything that moves--or doesnt.
ReplyDeletePlease bring diagram of how to wear a dhoti(?spelling). Please make sure that at the airport you are wearing a peacock green sari with a Mrigold in your hair and you carry a rolled up copy of the Times of India--just in case we dont recognise you after such a long time away--You wont miss me-I will be the one in a full length plaster in the back of the car in the car park !
Lots of love and see you soon-xxx dad

Hi HOLLY
ReplyDeleteHad a lovely surprise letter from you yesterday! Brilliant to read your news and glad you were pleased with your final challenge! I had a good trip to London at the weekend, Camden Market etc. and Dad came as Mel was not too well. Just back from visiting the dentist, and he's familiar with Mysore and the National Park so you'll have lots to chat about next time you're in the chair. It's Wednesday, so Dad and I will probably go for a snack round the corner. Just a week until we see you again - yippee. Love you, Mum xxx
Hi Tina
ReplyDeleteRead Elaine's blog , yes mums never at home and she did see the reindeer!! not only did she see the reindeer she also scooped up some of their poo and guess where's she's put it?
On a more serious note your car has passed it's MOT and I've taxed it for the next year (HAPPY CHRISTMAS). Now we are digital I've tuned in your TV to the new channels although it did take me a while to find your remote but I'll keep it a secret where you keep it!!
A quick tip from me about how to keep safe around elephants, PG TIPS makes the best tea.
Going now, see you soon

Chloe - we saw 3 photos of you looking well at Muttimoola School opening - it seems to have stopped raining. January's the driest month in Kerala; I don't know about Mysore the other side of the hills. Al, Lizzie & Flora arrived here at 1.30 this morning and were off again 8 hours later, but we all breakfasted together. Enjoy/take care;see you soon - Mum & Dad
