Throughout this expedition, we’ll be looking after the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) of past Raleigh India projects, looking in particular at bio-gas and eco-sanitation. The information we collect will help us understand the impact that our projects are having on communities. It will also give some of the venturers the opportunity to meet local beneficiaries and see first-hand how their efforts will affect peoples’ lives long after they’ve returned home.
With that in mind, our first stop was Echo 3 to collect eager venturers, Dan and Shafeeque, who had both kindly volunteered to get involved with the data collection. Our first evaluation visit was to Kandegala village, where Raleigh had installed 16 eco-san units in 2008. After picking up our MYKAPS project partner, Mr. Mahadevaiah, who doubled up as our guide and translator, we went straight into a community focus group meeting on the floor of the village nursery!
The group was made up of agricultural workers and we caught them just before they left for a hard days graft working the land. It was interesting to hear how their lives had changed since the installation of the composting toilets and how the fertiliser had made a positive impact on the quality of their crops.
Once the session had finished, we visited each household, where the venturers went through our questionnaires with the locals. Again this was very informative, we heard all about the feelings and perceptions of the villagers towards their eco sanitation toilets, and we also got to see the toilets for ourselves.
But it wasn’t all work for the M&E team, we drank lots of chai, indulged in some tasty traditional nibbles and socialised with the locals along the way!

ReplyDeleteEven een berichtje van mij; ik zag net een foto van je; je lijkt echt een bodybuilder haha- supaah nice allemaal!! Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat je het niet naar je zin hebt, dus geniet van alles! Met mij gaat het, tjaa.. Ik ben gestopt. Dus ik werk voornamelijk veel nu. Er zijn wel wat stiekeme reisplannetjes ontstaan, maar dat is nog klein en laat ik nog weten.. Ik hoop dat je dit snel leest en dat we weer eens wat van je horen!

ReplyDeleteHee annie! Hoe staat het ervoor? Zie nu dat mijn vorige berichtje goedgekeurd is en op de site staat dus ik ga lekker door met berichten! Ik heb een heel gezellig weekend gehad met Juul, die kwam 4 dagen op bezoek dus dat was heel leuk, heb haar kunnen laten zien wat ik hier allemaal uitspook in Salamanca en hoe raar mijn roomie is ;p (ze praat nooit, slaapt altijd en áls ze iets zegt is het vaak een of andere rare grom, heel apart. maar misschien heb ik geluk met mn volgende roomie, want ze gaat over anderhalve week alweer weg!) Maar was dus wel leuk om aan iemand van thuis mijn leventje hier te showen, nu we allemaal zoveel verschillende dingen aan het doen zijn! En wel leuk voor jou ook, want als jij hier volgend jaar ook heen gaat kan je met mij én met juul over alle leuke uitgaansplekjes en zo praten ;p
Wel moeilijk om deze berichtjes te schrijven hoor, want ik bral maar lekker wat, maar weet natuurlijk helemaal niet of je daar wel zin in hebt nu je daar in the wilderness zit.. ik hoop maar van wel :) Als je mogelijkheid hebt contact ooit hoor ik graag wat feedback!
Wooo trouwens, ik denk opeens aan iets: er zijn hier heel veel leuke mensen die het hele jaar in salamanca blijven, of in ieder geval langer dan ik, dus die ga je misschien dan ook wel ontmoeten als je gaat! Dat zou echt lachen zijn haha. Nouja dit was wel weer mijn inspiratiegehalte voor vandaag, als weer leuke verhalen hebt krijg je ze te horen!

A message for Charlotte Ali (Echo 3) hi sis thanks for your message! I have sent a few messages on the blog but they dont seem to appear on here so I am not sure if you got them, nice to know everything is going well, kids are currently off school on their holidays and the weather is raining today! any way everyone is well here and we are all excited for halloween, we are all going to mums as she is having a party for the kids.
