Charlie One's school is open!

On Tuesday, me (Marie), Jenny and Mark, our country director, attended the opening of the pre-school in Koolal, Tamil Nadu. After a three and a half hour drive, we were welcomed by the smiling faces of the community, and the Charlies looking resplendent in saris and lungis.

It was fantastic to see the result of the venturers' and projects managers' hard work.  Their achievement is made all the more impressive given the challenging and trying conditions they had to endure. But the perpetual state of being soggy and mud-splattered was worth it, as the school will enable the children to access mainstream education and improve their future prospects. It will also be used for adult education and community meetings in the evening.

The ceremony was very moving as Mr Ranganathen, the executive director of CTRD, the tribal elders, Pushpamary the school teacher, the masons and Mark gave speeches which Mr Ranganathen translated. Shona did a great job speaking on behalf of the venturers, and me and Jen were also called upon to speak! I was very relieved that I managed not to cry! Although admittedly I cried intermittently throughout the ceremony. Finally, the occasion was rounded of with wonderful displays of dancing and a scrumptious lunch traditionally served on banana leaves.
